Grabbing at photos Peggy started holding them up in rapid succession.
“Attis likes lace, ruffles and chunky accessories. I like bright colours, cut outs and billowing fabrics. You like corsets, safety pins and fishnets. Let’s stop trying to shoot each other's ideas down and make a design that incorporates all of these.”
“It’d look ridiculous.” Attis said.
“Have you ever seen a fashion show? Half the time the outfits are bonkers but that’s what makes them good, that’s what makes an outfit standout, that’s how we win.”
“Keep talking.”
Peggy didn’t hesitate, didn’t even think as she crossed the classroom and pulled Attis’ rucksack off his shoulder.
“Hey! What are you doing?” Attis tried to hold onto the bag, but Peggy gave it a sharp tug and he let go. Hands shaky with excitement, Peggy pulled out Attis' sketchbook and flipped it to one of Attis’ designs.
A Renaissance inspired dress with layers of rolling fabric and delicate lace gloves fills the page.
“What if we took this dress and ripped off the long hemline at the front and added a massive studded belt to it.”
“It would look insane.” Attis replied.
“So does all runway fashion.” Passing him a pencil, Vivienne grabbed his shoulders and forced him to sit in a chair. “Start drawing it. And add fishnets. And heels.”
“If I’m drawing heels I’m making them so chunky they could knock someone’s teeth out.”
“Do it. And add a massive ruffled collar.” Added Peggy sitting beside him, marvelling how his pencil glided across the paper to make their sketch come alive. “And some dramatic sleeves, like the kind you see in pirate movies.”
“I’m keeping the lace gloves.” Attis commented.
“Fine.” Sitting on his other side, Vivienne grinned. “This looks so incredibly mismatched that it looks good. Maybe even great. Peggy, you're a genius.”
“I know.” Smiling, Peggy lifted her chin.
“But we’ll still have to make it. And that’s going to be a lot of fabric. There’s no way Mrs Maddison will give us all this fabric. She hates us.”Attis stated.
“Surely if we show her our design-” Peggy started.
“Do you seriously think Mrs Maddison is going to approve of this? She dress-codes Viv every other time she sees her.” Attis shakes his head. “We can’t show it to her. Not until the last possible minute, when it’s too late for her to say no. We are gonna have to get the fabric from somewhere else and this much fabric is gonna be expensive. And we need a model.”
“Let me worry about the fabric. I know a guy.” Vivienne said as Attis’ pencil finished the last few strokes. He held it at arm distance for them to admire.
“This might actually work.” Peggy beamed at them.
“We still gotta make it, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
Peggy’s phone buzzes three times in a row. Seeing the time she groans and starts shoving her things into her bag.
“I’m late.” Jumping from the chair she yanks her jacket on. “I was supposed to meet Kai at the school gates fifteen minutes ago. He’s going to kill me.”
“Kai? He’s your brother right?” Attis gathers his stuff as well.
“Half-brother.” Peggy corrects fumbling with the zip on her bag and she ends up dropping it completely.
“He’s the one from that video, right?” Vivienne steps over Peggy’s bag with a gleam in her eyes.
“We don't talk about the video.” Straightening, Peggy stared Vivienne down. “And don’t you ever mention it to him. It wasn’t funny what happened to him.”
They might be working together and they might be getting along for the moment, but if either of them said anything about Kai she swore she’d-
“Something like that is never funny.”
