Beautiful Reticence

The Library

The Library

Apr 29, 2024

Juliana sits quietly listening to music through her noise cancellation headphones at a corner study table beside a large window overlooking campus. Spread out in front of her are several pencils, pens, notebooks, and an assortment of books. Joseph watches as Juliana surveys the reading materials in front of her and chooses the largest book on the table. Human Psych 101. The large book looks comical in her small delicate hands. Observing how intently she reads and takes notes, he catches himself smiling and caught somewhat off guard by her petite nature.  Has she always been this timid? Is she really as fragile as she looks?

Joseph approaches the table and takes the seat directly across from Juliana, who continues to read and take notes, seemingly unaware of him. After a few awkward beat, Joseph clears his through. Nothing. Is she ignoring me? Seriously?  Joseph clears his throat once more. Still nothing.  A few moments later, he fakes a cough, only to  have Juliana continue to not acknowledge his presence. Frustrated, he stands up and leaning towards her, knocks lightly on the table.

"Um..." he starts. Juliana looks up briefly, raises one eyebrow, and then goes back to her studies.

"Um, excuse me." Joseph says, knocking once again on the table. Juliana pauses, looks up and giving him a rather annoyed expression, rolls her eyes, turns her music up slightly, and then proceeds to return back to her studies. This time with even more intense concentration, as if now, she is purposefully trying to ignore him. Joseph feeling even more frustrated by Juliana's quirky behavior, sighs deeply as if to collect himself, before trying to speak to her again.

"Hey, maybe you don't remember me? Um, I'm Joseph. I mean, my name, my name is Joseph. I'm in your Human Psych class", he says pointing to the large book that Juliana is holding.  He pauses, studying her inquisitiviely. Juliana glances up, raises an eyebrow, and then goes back to her studies. It's as if she is just trying his patience now.  Nevertheless, Joseph persists, "So you're the silent type, huh?" Juliana pauses long enough to glare at him. Her grey eyes pierce through him like sharp throwing stars. "Ouch, I felt that one." Feeling somewhat defeated at his inability to get through to her, he lets out another long sigh. "Look...", he starts, but is quickly interrupted by Juliana as she puts her pencil down rather aggressively. He watches as she quietly and purposefully places her notes inside her book as she closes it. As if daring him to speak, she looks Joseph directly in the eye for a moment before rising. Her grey eyes send shivers down his spine. Juliana finishes gathering her things and then without any further acknowledgement, she leaves. "Bye to you, too", Joseph calls out after her to which Juliana is either too far away to have heard him at all, or is just plain ignoring him again. Joseph settles on the latter.

Joseph is still pondering his interaction when he noticed a rather large stack of books with arms, legs and a forehead approach the table. Emily sets the rather large pile of books on the table none to gingerly and preceeds to talk, not recognizing that Juliana is no where to be seen.  "Okay, I think I found some stuff that will help us complete the first project. I couldn't find everything, but there should be enough - oh, you're not Juliana. You sat there just as quietly as she does, that I guess I didn't notice. Where'd she go anyway?"

"You don't miss a beat do you?" Joseph said. "I don't know where she went, she didn't say."

"Of course, she didn't say", Emily scoffs. "What are you doing here?"

"I just got out of my AutoCAD class and came here to get started on the project that our psych professor assigned. I saw Juliana was sitting here alone, so -"

"So?" Emily inquires.

"So?" Joseph mimics back.

"Yeah, so...what did you say to make her leave?" Emily says in an accusatory tone.

"What? Nothing. She left of her own accord" Emily looks at him, and sternly raises her eyebrow. " Honestly,  I didn't say anything."

"Well, you had to have said something insensitive." Juliana's tone is none to friendly. "Otherwise, Jules would still be sitting here. So, I'll ask you one more time. What did you say to my friend?"

"I simply re-introduced myself to her, that's all.

"And?" Emily urged.

"And" Joseph lowered his voice, "I may have tried to make her laugh by saying that she was the quiet type."

"Seriously? You, you said that?"

Joseph began to rub nervously at the back of his neck. "Yeah, I did. Look, I'm sorry if I said something inappropriately. I was just trying to make her laugh."

"Perhaps, you should think before you speak." Emily reprimands. "If you're gonna be an asshole just stay away from my friend." Emily storms off, leaving Joseph even more confused now. Shrugging his shoulders he begins to look through the books that Emily left behind on the table. Finding one that seems somewhat interesting, Maslow's, Theory of Human Motivation, he pulls out a notebook and pencil from his backpack, and begins to take notes.

Outside the library, a gentle rain has started to fall. Out of breath, and soaked, water drips from Michaels wavy dark hair onto the table. "Hey, sorry I'm late. I had to go to the other side of campus for class and the shuttle bus was late."

"No worries" Joseph states as he scribbles down another note.

"Good job on getting all these books for us already." Michael says somewhat shocked by Joseph's motivation.

"Oh, I didn't do this. The girls, did." Joseph says waving his pencil at the books now scattered about the table.

"The girls?"

"Yeah, the two from our psych class. They were here - and then they weren't" Joseph says rather mater of factly.

"What?" Michael says complete confused by the situation.

Groaning at the weight of having to now explain himself, "When I got here, I saw that quiet girl sitting by herself."

"So."

"So, I thought, I'd...reintroduce myself to her." Joseph tries to say this as postively and enthusiastically as possible.

"Don't tell me." Michael starts with a sigh.

"Don't tell you, what?" Joseph retorts.

"You tried to be funny..didn't you?" Michael says somewhat disappointedly.

"Well, I thought it as funny." Joseph says comically.

Michael stares at him like a disappointed father figure. "Seriously?" Joseph hangs his head in shame and somewhat embarrassment. "Okay, so that explains the disappearance of one girl. What happened to the other one?"

"She got mad, and left." Joseph said in a quiet tone.

"Way to go. Pissing off two women in one day, there ought to be a medal for that." Joseph can tell that Michael is upset from his tone.

"Yeah, leave it to me. I have a real talent with the ladies. I've been making women angry since birth." Joseph says trying to lighten the mood.

"Maybe, you should consider getting  a hobby." Michael snaps back.

"Shut up, let's just get to work. Since I'm the one that messed up, I'll check these books out before we go and give them to the girls as a peace offering next class." Joseph offers hoping to appease his friend. Michael scoffs, shrugs his shoulders and starts to gather up all the books. Picking up a book by Sigmund Freud and looking it over, Joseph chuckles. "I don't get it. I was just trying to ease the tension. I swear that girl...it's the silent ones you always need to watch for. Who knows when they'll just randomly blow up in your face."

"You did not just say that" Michael reprimands. Joseph looks at him, shrugging his shoulders questioningly. "Do you even hear yourself? It's always the silent on you need to watch...you never know when they'll blow. What the hell kinda bullshit is that?

Getting on the defensive, "What? It's true, isn't it. It's always the quiet ones that you see in the news. Folks that knew her state that she was always quiet and polite. Then you find out they murdered a family of four over a taco."

Slamming the books back down on the table, Michael snaps, "A taco? Damn it, man."

Frustrated, Michael turns and begins to walk away. Joseph watches, bewilderedly before calling out after him, "Seriously? You're not gonna help carry these?" Michael just raises one hand in the air, waves Joseph off before giving him the middle finger as he exits the library. Sighing, Joseph picks up the rather large stack of books and heads to the circulation desk where he quickly checks out the books and races out of the library to catch up with Michael.
