Patricia understood her brother's shock. She pulled him aside for a private conversation, hoping to calm his anger.
"Patrick, please calm down," she urged, gesturing towards the still-closed eyes of the inspector. "He hasn't seen anything."
Patrick's anger only intensified. "ARE YOU INSANE? HOW CAN YOU BE SO SURE? HE'S AN INSPECTOR, RESPONSIBLE FOR HUNTING AND EXECUTING WITCHES ACROSS THE KINGDOM. KILLING HIM IS OUR BEST CHANCE TO PROTECT OUR SECRET."
Shocked by her brother's proposal, Patricia protested, "WE CAN'T JUST KILL AN INNOCENT MAN!"
"INNOCENT?" Patrick scoffed. "That man is anything but innocent."
Disagreeing with her brother's harsh judgment, Patricia insisted, "I believe he's a good man who won't bring us harm."
Patrick took a moment to collect himself, recognizing his sister's compassionate nature. He saw this as an opportunity to instill a sense of caution in her when dealing with others.
"All right," he conceded, his gaze piercing. "But what if you're wrong?"
Patricia understood her brother's intent and agreed to his condition. "If I'm wrong, I'll do whatever you want..."
"Without complaining," Patrick added firmly.
"Without complaining," Patricia affirmed, understanding the gravity of the situation.
As the twins searched for the inspector, they found no trace of him.
"Where is he?" Patricia exclaimed.
"HE DISAPPEARED!" Patrick replied, frustration evident in his voice, "But that's impossible! How could he vanish like that?"
"I think he ran away because he was frightened," Patricia reasoned.
Patrick grimaced. "We're doomed... I'll go and try to find him while he's still nearby."
Before Patrick could leave, Patricia stopped him in his tracks, "DON'T! It's useless to chase him," she urged.
Patrick looked at her incredulously. "You have no idea about the consequences. If that man reports us, our entire family will be in danger.
Patricia understood the gravity of the situation, but she also held onto hope that Derrick might show mercy due to her saving his life.
"Can't you let me handle this matter? Trust me... It will be only this time..." she pleaded.
Patrick remained silent, his anger evident in his brisk stride as he walked ahead. He couldn't bring himself to argue any longer with his sister.
"Let's go back home," he said tersely.
Patricia pondered her next steps as she walked home, contemplating how to address the situation.
"I must acknowledge my own power. There's no shame in that. But I need to ensure he didn't witness Patrick's magic. That's crucial."
Upon reaching home, she shared her plan with her brother.
"Please, take me to town tomorrow. I need to speak with him."
"Are you serious? They'll apprehend us on sight," Patrick responded.
"That's unlikely. The inspector is familiar with our residence. If he intended to arrest us, he would have done so already."
Patrick looked puzzled. "He knows where we live?"
Patricia found herself compelled to disclose everything that had occurred with the inspector since his unexpected arrival three days prior. Anticipating her brother's anger at her secrecy, she was taken aback when he listened calmly, his face betraying no emotion. Finally, he sighed.
"What's your plan?" Patrick inquired.
Patricia was astonished by her brother's unexpected response.
"What?" she replied, caught off guard.
"You must have a plan to rectify your mistake, correct?" Patrick clarified.
The excitement surged within Patricia as she realized her brother's willingness to lend an ear.
"Yes, of course, I do!" she exclaimed.
"Good," Patrick replied calmly. "I will step back and observe how you handle this problem on your own."
"Really?" Patricia asked, her hope rising.
"Yes, but on one condition," Patrick stipulated. "You must inform me of every move you plan to make, or else I will intervene."
Patricia agreed without hesitation.
"Fine, I will tell you everything," she promised.
"What's your first move?" Patrick inquired.
"I have to go to town and talk to the inspector. That's the only way to know exactly what he saw," Patricia explained.
"Alright," Patrick nodded in agreement.
Patrick remained surprisingly composed, opting to go along with his sister's plan. He understood that attempting to thwart her actions might only drive her to conceal more from him.
"I must keep a close watch on her and ascertain what that man is plotting. I'm certain he witnessed me using my magic... Things are already spiraling out of control; let's see how she handles it," Patrick thought to himself.
The following day, Patrick accompanied his sister to town. Despite Patricia's desire for a leisurely stroll, there was no time to spare.
Patricia went straight to the inspector's office and requested to meet with him.
"Can I meet the inspector?" she inquired.
The officer asked for her name, to which Patricia replied, "Patricia."
After relaying the message to the inspector, the officer returned and informed her, "The inspector has an important meeting. You'll have to wait for him."
Feeling anxious, Patricia contemplated the implications of the inspector's urgent meeting.
"He has an important meeting? Is he going to report about us? Should I leave? No... I can't... I must meet him..." she thought to herself, determined to see the inspector despite her growing unease.
After an hour's wait, Derrick finally granted Patricia permission to enter his office, greeting her with a warm smile.
"Good morning, my lady. Please have a seat," he welcomed her.
Patricia took note of his demeanor, attempting to discern his thoughts.
"Hello, inspector," she responded cautiously.
"I'm sorry that I kept you waiting for so long. Please, have a seat," Derrick apologized.
"It's okay...I...I came to talk about what happened yesterday... You disappeared without saying a word,"
Derrick's prolonged silence only heightened Patricia's nerves as she awaited his response.
"I...I wanted to check on you. I see that you are completely fine," she stammered, rising from her seat.
As she turned to leave, Derrick finally spoke up.
"Are you willing to talk about that?" he inquired.
Patricia paused, then turned back to face him with a newfound confidence.
"Yes, I do. You must be wondering how I was capable of defeating such a beast. Well, I'm strong..." she began.
"Only strong?" Derrick prompted.
"I'm super strong, and I don't think that's a crime," Patricia asserted boldly.
Derrick rose from his seat and approached Patricia, maintaining his unsettling smile.
"You are right, that's not a crime, but..." he began, leaning in closer to her and lowering his voice to a whisper.
"Using magic is the biggest crime," he uttered.
Derrick's words sent a chill down Patricia's spine. She realized that he had indeed witnessed Patrick using magic.
"He saw it! He saw Patrick using his magic! What should I do?" she panicked inwardly.
