Patrick found a spot on a rooftop where he could watch the office without being seen. He kept an eye on the entrance, worriedly waiting for his sister Patricia to come back from her meeting with Inspector Derrick.
As time passed, Patrick's mind filled with worries. Why was Patricia taking so long? Did something happen to her? Should he go and see what was going on? He couldn't shake off the feeling of distrust towards the inspector. His looks at Patricia seemed too intense, filled with desire.
He contemplated breaking into the office but decided against it, realizing it could make things worse. "No, that's not the right move. Acting impulsively could escalate the situation. I promised to wait until she comes out. I need to be patient."
Patricia felt overwhelmed when she realized Derrick had uncovered their secret. Her heart raced, and she clenched her hands, unsure of what to do next. Thoughts of her brother flooded her mind. "What should I say? He knows everything! What will happen to Patrick? Has he already reported him? If he has, our entire family could be in danger."
She took a moment to collect herself before fixing Derrick with a firm gaze and asking the question burning in her mind:
"Did you report us?"
Derrick didn't flinch, meeting her gaze evenly as he replied, "I see you're not denying it."
Undeterred, Patricia pressed him again, her expression unwavering: "Did you report us?"
Derrick settled back into his seat, his demeanor calm. "If I had, you wouldn't be standing here in front of me right now, would you? Don't you think so?"
Perplexed, she asked, "What do you mean by that?"
"To be honest, I considered it," he admitted, "but I couldn't bring myself to do it. You saved my life yesterday. I'm not the type to betray someone who's helped me. I owe you, and this is my way of repaying that debt."
Relief washed over Patricia, and she could finally breathe easy. With a grateful nod, she acknowledged, "Thank you."
Derrick couldn't shake the memory of Patricia's bold act, leaping to shield him from the basilisk. She'd even risked exposing her brother's dangerous secret by calling for his help. Witnessing her remarkable fighting skills and her brother's magical abilities left him both impressed and bewildered.
He expressed his curiosity, asking, "Why didn't you flee when the beast appeared? You could have ignored me and escaped, avoiding the risk of exposing your secret."
Patricia calmly sat down and replied, "How could I flee when I have the strength to save your life? I believe you're a good man, and I couldn't let a good man die."
Derrick was deeply affected by her words. Just an hour earlier, he had been on the verge of exposing them, possibly leading to their execution.
He sighed and covered his face, hiding his expression from her. "You can leave, but remember, you'll be under my watch," he said.
"Under your watch?" Patricia questioned.
"Yes, to ensure that no one discovers you and your brother. I assume you won't mind if I visit again," he clarified.
Patricia felt a surge of happiness. Not only was the inspector letting them go, but he was also offering to protect them.
She drew a warm smile after that tense moment. "Of course not. You can come whenever you want. Thank you very much, Inspector," she said gratefully.
Derrick couldn't help but smile in return. "Call me Derrick," he said warmly.
With that, Patricia left the office, feeling relieved that everything had turned out even better than she had imagined.
The sight of Patricia's arrival snapped Patrick out of his thoughts. He glanced down to see Patricia walking towards him, her expression serious.
As soon as she entered a side alley, he jumped right in front of her. "What happened?" he asked urgently.
Patricia answered him firmly, "He knows about your magic."
Patrick's heart skipped a beat. What he had feared had come true. "I knew it! Did that bastard do something to you?"
But Patricia's bright smile reassured him. "Calm down, Patrick, nothing happened."
"Nothing?" Patrick asked incredulously.
"Actually, things went very well," Patricia replied.
"Tell me everything that happened between the both of you," Patrick demanded.
And so, Patricia recounted her conversation with the inspector, reassuring her brother that everything was alright.
Patrick listened, struggling to believe what he was hearing. "He said that he would let it go?"
"Yeah, and he will try to protect us! I told you he is a good man," Patricia insisted.
"But what if he is lying? We shouldn't trust that man," Patrick countered.
"Please, Patrick, don't be skeptical. The inspector is grateful that we saved his life. There is no way he would harm us," Patricia reasoned.
Patrick's doubts about Inspector Derrick grew stronger. He was convinced that Derrick wouldn't let the matter go easily due to his reputation. Yet, at the same time, he felt relieved that nothing serious had happened...yet. "That bastard is planning something, I'm sure of it," he thought. "But what is it? Is he targeting Patricia? Well, that's not surprising. No man can resist such a beauty. I'll play along and see what happens next."
He grinned, attempting to conceal his worry. "You did great. I didn't expect you to pull it off."
"Seriously?" Patricia's eyes widened in surprise.
"Yeah, I'm proud of you."
Patricia was overjoyed that her brother had finally praised her. She hugged him tightly, tears of happiness streaming down her cheeks. "Finally, everything is resolved, and we can return to our normal lives," she thought for a moment. But little did she know, the inspector had another hidden agenda. After she left the office, he took a few moments to carefully contemplate his next move.
Patricia's radiant smile lingered in his thoughts, captivating him with its warmth. Her courage and beauty created an irresistible blend that unwittingly drew him closer to her.
"I can't allow a wizard to roam freely," he mused, grappling with the dilemma. "But I must find a way to restrain him without putting Patricia in harm's way... How can I do that?"
