After ensuring the inspector would maintain their secret, Patricia and her brother returned home. Despite Patrick's reservations, he refrained from dampening his sister's spirits.
"Let's observe his actions. He'll reveal his intentions soon," Patrick remarked.
Two peaceful days ensued until, as Patrick anticipated, Derrick extended an invitation to Patricia.
"What's that man up to?" he questioned.
Patricia remained unperturbed, convinced that the inspector meant no harm: "Don't worry, I'm certain he simply wants to inquire about something."
Patrick couldn't shake off his concerns: "I have a feeling that man has his sights set on you. Don't you think so?"
Patricia dismissed his notion: "Don't be absurd, Patrick! Why would someone of his stature be interested in me?"
Patrick offered his reasoning: "Because you're exceptionally beautiful."
Patricia's smile waned as sadness crept into her eyes:
"He witnessed me fighting that creature. No man would desire such a violent woman as his partner."
But then she perked up:
"Nevertheless, I'm thrilled to revisit the town! This time, I plan to spend the entire day exploring the shops."
Patrick affectionately patted her head: "We'll head out tomorrow morning, and Paige will join us."
"Paige? Are you certain?" Patricia questioned.
"Yes, she'll stick by your side all day to ensure that man doesn't try anything," Patrick reassured her.
"You know he couldn't harm me even if he tried," Patricia countered.
"I don't trust him. I won't let you go without Paige accompanying you," Patrick insisted.
Patricia sighed: "Alright, I don't mind bringing her along."
The next day, the three siblings made their way to the town. Paige was thrilled to finally visit with her beloved sister, and Patricia shared in her excitement, despite it not being her first time. They appeared to be the same age.
"Sister, what are we going to do?" Paige asked eagerly.
"Paige, I'll make sure you have a wonderful time today," Patricia replied with a smile.
Patrick interjected with a serious expression: "I hate to dampen your spirits, but we need to meet with the inspector first, and we're uncertain how long it will take."
Patricia brushed off his concern, "Don't worry, Paige. I'll ensure you have an unforgettable day."
Upon arrival, Patrick escorted them to the office but opted not to accompany them inside, sensing a trap.
"If anything happens, call my name, and I'll be there," he instructed.
Patricia grew annoyed by her brother's overprotective nature, "Just wait here; we won't be long."
With that, she hurried inside before he could protest further.
Derrick greeted them warmly, "Good morning, my ladies. I'm delighted to see you."
He then turned his attention to Paige, who was hiding behind her sister, "I see you've brought your little sister with you... What's your name, my dear?"
Paige was captivated by his charming demeanor and found herself drawn to him. Without hesitation, she stepped forward and introduced herself, "Hello, sir. My name is Paige."
Derrick gently held Paige's hand and kissed it, "It's my pleasure to meet you, Paige."
Patricia felt relieved that the inspector seemed friendly and that her sister was being treated kindly. She asked, "Inspector, is everything alright?"
Derrick reassured her, "Don't worry, everything's fine."
He then donned his hat and jacket, "Since you've brought your little sister, may I have the honor of treating her? I know a very popular patisserie."
Patricia was taken aback by the unexpected invitation, but she welcomed the idea, relieved they wouldn't have to linger in the office much longer.
As they exited the office, Patrick was on the verge of intervening, but he held back upon seeing Patricia and Paige smiling, "What's going on there? Where are they headed?"
He trailed behind them, determined to find out where exactly the inspector was taking them, "If he tries anything, I'll deal with him."
Derrick escorted the two sisters to the town's most renowned patisserie.
Patricia and Paige, both new to the experience of visiting such an establishment, entered the bakery with wide eyes, filled with awe and wonder. The enticing aroma of freshly baked bread, sweet pastries, and rich cakes enveloped them, causing their mouths to water in anticipation.
The sisters roamed along the display cases, marveling at the array of delightful treats. Their eyes widened as they admired the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the pastries. Rows of pastel-hued macarons, decadent chocolate éclairs, and elaborately decorated cakes beckoned to them, igniting their cravings.
Little Paige, her mouth watering, couldn't contain her excitement. "SISTER, LOOK AT ALL THOSE CAKES!"
Both sisters had a sweet tooth, but they had never encountered such a dazzling selection of desserts before.
Derrick struggled to conceal his grin as he observed their amazed expressions. "You can choose whatever you like.
"REALLY? ANYTHING?" Paige exclaimed eagerly.
Derrick gently patted her head. "Yes, whatever you like."
Paige's eyes darted between the tempting treats, trying to decide where to start, while Patricia tried to remain composed, "Thank you for your generosity, Inspector."
"Derrick, just Derrick."
"Alright, Derrick," Patricia replied with a smile.
Derrick felt pleased to hear his name, "Please, pick whatever you desire. It's my treat today."
Patricia and Paige excitedly selected their treats. Paige chose a bright pink raspberry macaron, while Patricia opted for a chocolate-filled croissant. Derrick chuckled at their enthusiasm and covered the cost. The sisters couldn't contain their joy as they tasted their pastries. The raspberry filling's sweetness and the croissant's flakiness melted in their mouths, and they relished each bite with pure delight.
As they savored their treats, Patricia and Paige observed the bustling scene around them. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and steaming coffee enveloped the air, creating a cozy atmosphere in the patisserie. For the sisters, this visit was more than just a snack break. It was an introduction to a world of sweet indulgence they had never experienced before. They were grateful to Derrick for his generosity, which allowed them to explore the delights of the patisserie and create cherished memories together.
Patrick observed his sisters, their radiant smiles bringing him a sense of relief. Yet, he couldn't shake off his unease regarding Derrick's behavior.
"Why is he going to such lengths? Is he genuinely in love with her? If so, it might be good news, but why do I still feel unsettled?"
