Somehow while Furyo was blacked out, he wandered onto the roof of a Shibuya high-rise. Massive passenger jets cross overhead. From the corner of the building he sees the Monk and the Kitten. Standing on the edge of a vast gulf is a bald monk ringing a bell and chanting, in his arms the cat he rescued. Approaching apprehensively, the monk turns and smiles at him. Furyo senses that the world around him is covered in darkness, and only the monk is surrounded by warm orange light. Coming to the edge, Furyo sees the streams of pedestrians bellow.

The Monk says in perfect English, “You are on a dark path, it you continue on this path in life… you will surely end up spending eternity in Hell!” Furyo doesn’t know how to respond to that. Feeling pulled to the edge, Furyo joins the monk on the edge of the roof. Roughly grabbing his shirt, the monk pulls Furyo over the edge and instead of falling to his death, discovers a path of rumbling storm clouds appeared where the city was just far bellow.

The Monk continues. “In Buddhism we are judged by not just our actions and memories, but how we feel about them. Kicking a dog or stealing a plate of food may be a passing transgression in a long life of crime but this is balanced against good deeds and mournful feelings about misdeeds. You have committed so many crimes, a countless amount of violence, womanizing, bullying but there is a sprinkling of good deeds that acts as a counter weight. You are not wholly damned, but the suddenness of your death with out repentance and acts to placate the gods of death… you will suffer evermore.”

They walk through shrouded cliffs, dark forrests and raging coastal storms to arrive at the river of Hell. Alone with only the kitten, Furyo boards a raft with a corpselike creature pushing off the dark shore into the mist of lost souls. Around him, Furyo can hear anguished cries of the damned. In the water thousands of ghastly faces float in the murky water, eyes bloodshot, black tongues swollen and skin gaunt. The kitten does not like this place and struggles, hissing and scratching. He drops the cat and sits as they cross a vast gulf to a black shore dotted with funeral pyres. Arriving at the opposite shore, he steps off into a beach of ash and grey sand.

Strewn on the beach he sees gold teeth, glass eyes and discarded jewels. The Monk whispers, “The dead have no use for riches.” Walking up a rise made of bones, he sees a great festival of fire. Walking closer Furyo sees in the darkness beside him wailing souls with missing eyes and chopped limbs in old fashioned dress. Samurai walk carrying large pots of boiling victims. Great Lords on horse back glare with black eyes over battlefields of shivering wounded. Regal ladies in formal wear show signs of violence on their carved bellies and wounded necks. Seeing a familiar face, the Heroin addict bum is there pleading, falling to his knees and begging uncaring phantoms for some explanation. “Amaterasu, Amaterasu, Amaterasu, Tasuketekudasai, Sukutte kudasai!”

He sees Furyo and tries to scream but his tongue is gone and his throat shows some open gash deep into his larynx almost causing his head to fall off. Furyo has no urge to join in this mans story. He carries on to the fire festival. Massive beasts with horns like rams and tusks like boars busy them selves with the work of execution and torment. 鬼 (Oni) are savage demon ogres with bodies of primitive men. They stack fire wood under cauldrons and cut limbs from stooped down souls on workbenches. The festival of death greets the newly dead. Song and dance displays by famed 能 (Noh) and 歌舞伎 (Kabuki) actors frame the dark deeds among horse headed demons and other monstrous forms of cruel faced dark Angels. Beings with faces of Hawks and Jackals fight over the bodies of men and women torn to shreds by these savage Angels of wrath.

Seeing enough Furyo gathers his nameless cat and walks on to see what other malicious events this land of the dead has to show him. Coming to ponds full of boiling sulphur and streams of blood, he listens for some clue as to what he is doing here. In a stand of trees he sees severed heads on sticks, flayed skin and wounded minstrels singing songs of suffering among the brambles. He sees a deep moat around a fortification beneath circling ravens.

Great vultures and rabid dogs circle crucified saints whose names are forgotten in this dark land. Sirens and sodomites scream until their dry throats can only hiss like cats. This causes the kitten to hiss back. Moving on to the foot of a hill with a great burning castle. Furyo remembers 乱 ("Ran" by Kurosawa), old Hidetora Ichimonji was up there no doubt with his bow and haunted eyes. Searching the horizon for someone to blame his lifetime of misdeeds and poor choices. On the ramparts men with flint lock rifles and black bamboo hats look at him as if he isn’t some mirage in the swirling smoke. Seeing winged creatures with eagles faces, swords and cruel black wings makes him shudder.

He awakens in bed with the stewardess Cynthia. It all must have been a terrible dream. Was it a dream or a warning?

Furyo Matsuno didnt expect to be deported, after serving 5 years in prison he is on a plane to Japan. His criminal survival instincts lead him into conflict with both the Yakuza and Police. After falling into bad habits, he is killed and finds himself in an afterlife of Evil Spirits, Demons and Yokai. His only redeeming chance is having impressed a Hell Priest Exorcist with kind actions towards stray animals. This gives him a narrow chance at returning to the world of the living... if he is willing to seek out the angry spirits of the murdered, missing and unloved. Furyo does his best to follow a path or purity but his ties to organized crime and savage instinct for violence threaten to take him off the path of light.
