By the time Wang Haoran sobered up from his overwhelming emotions, Liu Leah was already on the ground unconscious with a bleeding forehead. He gritted his teeth and commanded Zhou Chun, Liu Leah’s personal assistant, “Call an ambulance or take her to the hospital yourself.” After giving the order, he left without looking back.
While hugging the still-breathing and bloody Liu Leah, Zhou Chun shouted, “You will pay for this!” toward the departing Wang Haoran.
+++++
Wang Haoran entered Li Mei’s room carrying two secured briefcases, while two nurses watched over the sleeping Li Mei. He trusted no one except Li Mei and his personal assistant, Zhao Bolin. However, he wasn't concerned about the two nurses, as they were under his authority, and two security guards monitored the room. He owned half of this particular hospital.
All five hospitals near his and Li Mei’s residence, as well as his company, were either half-owned by him or he was one of its major stakeholders. He was determined to prevent a repeat of what happened to his mother.
Each hospital had a dedicated room for him and Li Mei, along with assigned and contracted hospital staff who prioritized them over other patients when needed.
His efforts paid off, as any delay in the emergency department could mean the loss of his unborn child forever.
The senior nurse nodded at Wang Haoran as a form of greeting.
“Li Mei’s vital signs are within normal range, and she is sleeping soundly. The fetus is still in an unstable condition, but the medication prescribed by the doctor seems to be working. The doctor just checked on her and the fetus a few minutes before you arrived. She will return in less than half an hour for another check.”
After reporting the general status of Li Mei and the unborn child, both nurses left the room at Wang Haoran's dismissal.
Wang Haoran didn't sleep at all that night, or rather, he couldn't. He feared that the moment he opened his eyes, the only person he considered family would leave him alone in this world.
His attention was divided between Li Mei and his work. He mostly focused his mind on his work to ease his overwhelming emotions. Every so often, he glanced up to check if Li Mei was breathing.
As soon as he saw the rise and fall of Li Mei’s chest, he returned to his work. The doctor also checked on the mother and fetus every thirty minutes or so.
The morning of the second day, Li Mei woke up. She looked around and noticed tubes and wires attached to her. She also noticed Wang Haoran typing on his laptop.
“Haoran,” she called softly.
Wang Haoran looked up immediately. His baggy eyes started to turn red and wet.
“I’m glad you’re alright,” Wang Haoran muttered with a weak smile.
He closed his laptop, put it away, and then held Li Mei’s hands. “How are you feeling?” he asked calmly.
“I feel weak, but I am fine,” she answered back, returning Wang Haoran’s weak smile with a warm smile and bright eyes. “What happened? Why am I in the hospital?” she asked, confused and trying to remember what happened before she passed out.
Wang Haoran gathered his thoughts, and after a moment of silence, he began to speak.
“Someone pushed you, and you fell. You instantly fainted after that. That was yesterday morning. We are now in a hospital near the company. We almost lost our unborn child, but the doctor said it was getting stronger. It is staying strong and won’t give up on life,” Wang Haoran explained, his voice catching as he spoke about the child.
Li Mei was silent for a while, trying to digest what her beloved had said. She didn't want to cause anyone trouble, and she didn't want to lie, so she spoke what she thought she remembered from yesterday.
“I think I fainted on my own. I didn’t sleep properly the night before because I discovered my pregnancy, and I didn’t know what to tell you,” Li Mei explained, her eyes filled with sadness and a slight frown creasing her brow. She looked down and touched her slightly protruding belly.
“But they said you—.” Wang Haoran's eyes widened in shock as he tried to refute her, but then he realized that he had only heard about the incident and hadn't witnessed it himself.
He immediately called his trusted assistant, who was busy preparing all the necessities for two people. This assistant was about to return to the hospital to report to his boss when he received Wang Haoran’s call instead.
“Boss? I'm on my way to you now,” the assistant answered with a worried face. He had barely slept that night, much like Wang Haoran. He was worried about Li Mei.
“Get me the security footage of what happened yesterday and send it to me before you report,” Wang Haoran ordered.
“Yes, boss,” Zhao Bolin, Wang Haoran’s sworn brother and trusted assistant, immediately answered before Wang Haoran ended the call.
Beep—
With furrowed brows, Zhao Bolin looked at his phone. He wanted to ask about Li Mei, but his boss always ended his calls after issuing commands.
Zhao Bolin had already called the security and IT heads before heading toward their command station. He only instructed these two people to work on the security recording to minimize the leakage of information.
When he entered the office, he saw two guys with their eyes glued to the large screen in the middle of the room. The IT head had just found the recording of Li Mei falling, and they were both currently watching it play on the screen. They were confused and in disbelief at what they saw.
They had heard the rumors. It had even been seen in the online published tabloids and news outlets before being immediately removed yesterday.
They were impressed by how quickly the Lius had cleaned up their own daughter’s mess. They showed no mercy to those brave souls who were willing to do anything for money, especially if they targeted their one and only heiress. Even the social media platforms were not spared.
“I cannot believe Li Leah is innocent,” one of them muttered. Everyone nodded in the room except Zhao Bolin. They felt a little bad about this lovestruck fiancee, who couldn't see that their president was using her.
They felt even worse knowing she had been struck in the head by their cold president until she fainted. “It looks like she lost a lot of blood yesterday,” another one said.
Bang!
Zhao Bolin closed the door loudly to get their attention. When he had their attention, he immediately issued his orders.
“Delete what happened in the president’s office involving Li Leah like it never happened and forget what you saw, or else,” Zhao Bolin announced with narrowed eyes and a dark expression. “Send me the part about Li Mei and delete it afterward,” he added.
The president’s main office didn't have cameras because of the confidential materials stored in it, but the outside office was riddled with security cameras. One camera pointed towards the open office caught everything that happened yesterday in high definition.
Chu Jingyun, the head of IT, sent the footage to Zhao Bolin without hesitation and deleted the original copy. While his hands flew over the keyboard, he suddenly stopped and looked towards Zhao Bolin.
“Mister assistant,” he called, then gulped.
Zhao Bolin had a bad premonition when he saw the cramped expression of the youngest man in the room. Chu Jingyun might be young, but his skills were on par with others who had been in their industry twice his age.
“Spill it,” Zhao Bolin said through gritted teeth.
Chu Jingyun gulped again, then continued, “Someone copied what happened in the president’s office yesterday. They copied the whole recording from morning to afternoon.”
