I stood up and caught her arm as she tried to walk back into the house. Tipsy, she could barely hold herself up.
"Where do you need to go, I'll help you" I said as I held her around her waist.
"My room, all my stuff, is already packed. I was going to book a hotel after you all left" Sarah said.
I helped her hobble over to her room, and to my surprise, there stood a lone suitcase in the middle of the room.
"What about all the bed sheets and-" I started.
"The house came with all that stuff. I actually...don't own much. It's all in that suitcase...and a laptop bag out on the dining table. Oh! And my stack of illegal documents" Sarah said and grinned as she reached out and pulled up the handle of the suitcase.
Somehow, standing there, seeing Sarah like this, made me sad. It made me so sad. These whole entire time, I had been watching her from a distance, while she had been suffering alone, with one a suitcase and a laptop bag to her name. Even if we weren't ever going to be lovers, we were friends. And look what a shit friend I have been, to not even notice how much she had been struggling.
I took the suitcase from her in my left hand and held out my right hand to her. Sarah looked at me a little dazed, as though having let go of the luggage, she didn't know what to do.
"Sarah, I promise you, that no matter what this contract means to you, my contract to you, is that you can stay with me, for free, for as long as you need to get back on your feet again, even if that means forever" I told her.
Sarah smiled sleepily and placed her hand in mine gently.
"You mean it? Forever?" She asked, sounding like she was half asleep.
"Forever" I said and pulled her in close.
