“It was not that bad.”
“Are you kidding me?”
“Well, don't be a buzzkill. Look at the bright side of things. We will be staying in a hotel for over two weeks!” I excitedly say. It is going to be good for the both of us to change scenarios for some days. The contractors said the wall needed to be repaired properly so they closed the main water pipe. In addition, they needed all the power in the house off in order for them to not get electrocuted.
This Sunday morning is quite sunny. We had to leave today in order for the basement to get dry.
I want to think this is going to be like a little adventure.
Before we left the house, we made some arrangements. First, I called a friend and asked him if he wanted free food. I think he broke the laws of physics because he arrived two minutes later. We gave him the food that was on the fridge as well as some things that could have gone rotten from the cabinets. He left as soon as his hands were full. I wonder if he is a super interested bastard!
Second, we went to our respective rooms and chose the clothes we were going to wear under the time being. It was somehow a hard thing to do, I wasn't prepared for this unexpected trip.
I don't know why I am kind of excited. I am going to be in the same town as always.
Anyways, Karla packed everything in two seconds. I don't know how she does it. The worst is that she is going to look nice in all of the things she chose.
And third, and after the odyssey of choosing just two pairs of boots, we lock most of the rooms in the house. Not that we don't trust people, but you know, better be cautious. Well, the house is going to be fine. Sooner or later, we will be here again.
“What are you thinking?” I ask Karla.
“We should have fixed that leak.” She says.
“Things happen for a reason. What if we had fixed the leak but we would have never realized the walls were getting damaged?”
“Don't come to me, smarty ass. Didn't I tell you to fix that some weeks ago?” I will do as if what she said were in Chinese words.
“Not that I recall.” I nonchalantly say.
“Keep playing the innocent Liam.”
“But I am your small brother.”
“Shhhh”
“Don't shhhh me you…”
“We are here,” the Uber says. It was fast. I can see the front of the hotel.
The building in itself is old but magnificently beautiful. It has some remodelations that brings the touch of modernization. In better words, the windows have not been changed but some aspects like the paint and the plaster of the front wall are different. There is someone at the entrance, I suppose the bellhop. The doors are not big, in contrast, I would say kind of narrow. I guess it is due to the fact the hotel is ubicated in the center of downtown and not in a campestre zone. Though, there are like three doors where you can enter.
We get out of the vehicle and see that the bellhop is coming our way. He looks like a man in his fifties, looking at us with warm eyes and a nice attitude. I am kind of glad, some experiences in the past have been so overwhelming when it comes to service. Last time we were out of town with Karla. One of the staff, where we were staying, was so mean to everyone. Though, it was someone in a high position.
“Welcome to the Bridem hotel, let me carry your luggage for you.” I can say it is not a high end hotel, however it is one that belongs to those historical buildings from the Victorian time that people love to go to feel the beauty that was present in that time.
“Good morning” Karla and I say in synchronicity.
“Good morning, welcome to the Bridem hotel, do you have any reservation with us?” The receptionist says. She has a customer service smile on her face. I hope she is doing well. It is one of the hardest jobs if you ask me.
“No, we don't “ Karla says “We would like to take a room…”
I got distracted by the interiors of this place. It seems the owners must have had this place for decades. It has lots of old things that have been refurbished and maintenanced for a long time. Some of the paintings that are hanging from one of the walls caught my attention. These are pictures of forests? I suppose? I do not know where these places are but these are ringing a bell inside my head. Some of these are in black and white and from what I can tell have seen time go by. Nevertheless, some of these are recent, they are in vibrant shades of green colors.
What is that? It seems one of the paintings has been…
“LIAM.” I turn my face to look at Karla calling for me “I am gonna get you some focus pills or something, you are always distracted.”
“Jokes on you. You are the same with different things as well.” She knows that is right so the topic stops there.
“Which room do we have?” I ask
“I got us a room on the third floor with double beds. It is not the most equipped, but it is enough for us.” I suppose she is right. While it is decent, the rest does not matter. It seems the bellhop is already waiting for us on the third floor with our things.
“Does the room face the street?” I ask Karla who is messaging on her phone. I catch her by the elbow before she crashes on a stand with hotel things.
“Yes.”
Karla opens the room and makes me question the whole “not the most equipped”, the room is painted in a soft, pastel sky blue that brings such a tranquil vibe, the curtains in the two balconies are a clear white with beige. The furniture in the room is modern, both of the beds are big with cushions with matching colors, and there is a Tv on the wall. There is even enough space to walk, it does not feel cramped at all with the things that are inside. The bathroom is spectacular as well, it has a pretty decent shower and a square tub.
To summarize, I can't imagine how the most equipped rooms are.
“How do you like it?” the bellhop asks.
“It's a really nice room.” Karla answers him. She gives the bellhop a tip and he leaves the room after giving his thanks to her. She is so rich.
“Well, Karla. What did you mean when you said it wasn’t the most equipped?”
“Yeah, I know right? I was not expecting this either. This hotel is going to be a boom when summer arrives. And you know that is beneficial for the restaurant.”
“I am kind of glad the pipe went nuts.” She just laughs at that.
The rest of the morning goes in a blur, we unpack everything and organize it in the drawers. I am surprised with the space. I could have brought all of my things without any trouble.
“Oh my god, isn’t it hot today? I am gonna take a shower.” I say to Karla.
“Ok, I will go get us something to drink. Summer is COMING.”
“Did you have to yell that part precisely? Sometimes I wonder if I need to give you pills for your weird brain.” She just rolls her eyes and leaves the room.
I can say, it is one of the best showers I could have taken in years. I do not know if it is because moving things is always annoying and you end up sweating like a pig or because this bathroom is so nice. I will have Karla remodeled our whole house.
After this, I will not shower anywhere else.
I extend my hand to catch the towel and realize there is none. Just my luck. I am not gonna dry myself with the clothes that are dirty, and less, use the few ones I brought to wear in the time being.
A memory crosses my mind, the stand with towels.
I suppose there should not be anyone in the hallway, right?
I open the door and look at both sides. However, I am not that stupid. I kind of wrap a towel in my waist before leaving the room. It does not do a great job though. Let's say It does not leave anything to the imagination.
I get out of the room and go straight to the stand. It is at the end of the hall where the elevator doors are.
I am glad no one is here. I would die in shame if someone looked at me like this. I am about to catch a towel when the elevator doors open. I cannot go to the room that is worse than staying here, I would look like a weirdo. I grab the first towel I find and try to wrap it around my waist. What I didn't count on, was that I chose the tiniest one ever.
“Liam?” A voice I recognize calls for me. I raise my head and look into the same green eyes that follow me wherever I go.
“Lucas
