Ruth stood at the top floor, leaning against the railing, observing Sam engaged in conversation with Frederick at the corner table.
Frederick appeared visibly frustrated as he spoke with Sam. Ruth's gaze narrowed as he witnessed Sam patting the man's back and offering words of consolation. Despite his efforts to read Sam's lip movements, the distance was too great, and he could only catch fragments of what he said.
With a resigned sigh, Ruth turned and made his way back to his cabin.
Half an hour later, the door to Ruth's cabin swung open, and Sam entered with a grave expression on his face. His steps were urgent as he made his way toward Ruth,"Ruth, did you send the video to Frederick?"
Frowning, Ruth stood up from his chair and approached Sam. "No, why? Did something happen?"
Meeting Ruth's gaze, Sam replied, "Frederick told me he received a strange video from an anonymous sender. He talked about his mother."
Ruth paused, pondering for a moment, before responding, "Perhaps it's her doing."
"But why would she do that?" Sam muttered, not understanding why she did that.
Ruth wrapped his arms around Sam's waist, pulling him close against his chest. He glared at Sam, saying, "Don't tell me you're feeling sorry for that boy."
Sam pouted in response, replying, "He's a good man, unlike his mother."
"Oh, really? Then who's better? Him or me?" Ruth asked, tightening his hold on Sam's waist, careful not to hurt him.
Sam looked at the jealous man before him and grinned. Standing up on his toes, he kissed Ruth's cheek and then lifted his hands, showing thumbs-up signs with both.
"You're the best," he declared.
Ruth chuckled at Sam's words and gave him a light peck on the lips.
"Well, Ruth, there's one thing I can't wrap my head around. Carlos is just a small rat to deal with; we can handle him even without Gloria. Why does she insist on involving Gloria?" Sam voiced his confusion.
"She must have her reasons," Ruth replied, ruffling Sam's hair with a smile on his lips.
Sam sighed and hugged Ruth. "She's too difficult to understand. I hope she can find someone she can trust completely."
Returning the hug, Ruth looked at the wall behind Sam with a distant look in his eyes.
"There will be someone soon," Ruth thought to himself.
Meanwhile, Daniel and Johnny came out from the orphanage. They had come to see Diego and Hazel, only to learn that Diego had resigned from his job as a caretaker and left the orphanage with Hazel.
Daniel glanced down at a piece of paper in his hand, which held their current address. It was a small village located a bit away from the main city. He drove towards the indicated destination.
After half an hour of driving, They arrived at the village. Parking his car under the shade of a tree, they made their way through the bustling streets, asking locals about the location of Diego's house and following their directions.
Arriving in front of the small, isolated house with a small courtyard, Daniel took in the surroundings. The house was nestled amidst small plants and vibrant flowers. As he turned to his right, he spotted Diego carrying a vat of water on his shoulder.
Diego was visibly surprised to see Daniel and his assistant in front of his house. He quickly set down the water and approached them, "Officer Smith, Officer Wilhem," he greeted them respectfully.
Daniel nodded in response and inquired, "Why did you resign from your job?"
Diego sighed and suggested they should take a stroll along the cornfield. Johnny silently followed his boss.
"Hazel was having nightmares every night. I thought a new environment might be good for her," he explained.
"Hmm, that's understandable," Daniel nodded as he paused in his steps. He turned to face Diego and asked, "Did she mention who told her to give the chip to me?"
Diego shook his head. "I've asked her a few times, but she refuses to say anything. All she keeps saying is some woman promised her she'd punish the criminals. But Hazel never keeps secrets from me. If she did, then that woman must be a good person."
“Good person, huh? Don't say she is spreading her kindness by killing people?" Daniel quipped sarcastically.
Diego grinned sheepishly and scratched the back of his head. "Well, the deads aren’t good either”
“Law exists to punish them," Daniel calmly educated Diego like a sincere policeman.
Johnny glanced at his boss from the sideline and muttered under his breath, "Says the one who made me beat the shit out of Gaston."
"Maybe you should ask her again," Diego suggested as he led them to the other side of the cornfield, where the joyful sounds of children's laughter filled the air.
The trio observed the group of children playing where a boy tried to catch them and others scattering away from him. Daniel scanned the group, searching for Hazel. He spotted her giggling and running alongside the other children, trying to evade the boy chasing them.
The girl was so different from the last time he saw her. She gained some weight and looked radiant.
Seeing Hazel so carefree and happy, Daniel hesitated to approach her. Despite knowing that the woman Hazel mentioned might be a murderer, she had brought joy and hope into the girl's life.
Daniel hadn't yet informed the higher-ups about the woman who helped them obtain the chip. He wanted to confirm the situation himself before reporting it to the chief.
Without disturbing the children, Daniel quietly left the area with Diego and his assistant. Diego didn't inquire why Daniel hadn't spoken to Hazel, understanding that Daniel didn't want to bring back the painful memories for her.
"What are you planning to do about her?" Daniel asked as he opened his car door.
Diego, who had been accompanying them, stood in front of them and replied honestly, "I plan to legally adopt her. Once she's settled into her new life, I'll enroll her in the local school so she can continue her studies."
“Hmm. Feel free to call me when you need help” Daniel patted him on the back and got inside the car and drove away with Johnny.
Diego thanked him and looked at the car until it disappeared at the end of the road and returned to his house.
Inside the car, Johnny stared at his boss with unblinking eyes, puzzled by the purpose of their visit. Had his boss gotten so bored cooped up in his office all day that he decided to take a random field trip to this village?
"I'm not bored, Johnny," Daniel remarked without turning to face him.
Johnny's heart skipped a beat as he stared at his boss with wide eyes through his glass, his mind racing with thoughts. "Does my boss know mind-reading?"
"No, I don't have mind-reading powers," Daniel replied casually, as if he knew exactly what his assistant was thinking.
No wonder he was considered one of the top police officers in their division. Johnny felt a swell of pride at being the assistant to such an impressive man.
Daniel turned his head and met his assistant's shining eyes. He couldn't help but roll his eyes and say, "Your expression gives it all away. I don't need mind-reading abilities to guess what you're thinking Johnny."
Johnny covers his embarrassment with an awkward cough. "But boss, how are we going to find the killer now?"
"Let's wait until he or she or they kill again," Daniel replied casually, whistling without a care in the world.
His boss truly was a policeman who strictly abides by LAW, Johnny thought bitterly.
