It had felt wrong to die last night.

It felt wrong to be alive this morning.

When I finally find my car in the crowded parking lot, I'm almost expecting to see Ender sitting across from me eating Dunkaroos with that dumb cap pulled backward on his head. But there was no sign of him, he was gone, and so was his mobile meth lab.

I get into my car, slam the door closed, and just sit there for ten minutes, trying to process everything in my little bubble while a bunch of tourists walk outside my car with their luggage, oblivious to the pain and turmoil I was experiencing deep inside.

It gave me the weirdest feeling, knowing that I'd shared a whole conversation with a total stranger, slept in the same bed as him, and then subsequently smothered his ass with a pillow the night before. Seeing the spot where he'd stood and where he should have been talking me through how to deal with living after knowing what I knew now. It wasn't fair that I was going to have to deal with the aftereffects alone.

I finally dig my phone out of the glove compartment and scroll through a dozen messages, most coming from my boss, who wanted me to work a shift at Charlie's Pizza and threatened to fire me if I kept ignoring his phone calls. My grandma had called me twice, probably wondering why I hadn't brought her coffee and pan dulce like I did every morning on the way to work.

I finally hit the holy grail when I checked Grindr. Ender had deleted his profile, but the messages that we had exchanged were still registering in the little chat box under my name.

"Hold on, I work the night shift at McDonald's."

"The drive isn't that far. I'll meet you at the Roxbury Motel if you're still up for it."

"Got you, mother-fucker," I hiss under my breath, and I make sure to screenshot all the messages before I buckle up and decide to drive back to New York. There had to be an infinite amount of crappy McDonald's restaurants between here and the city, but at this point, I had nothing to lose.

I was going to scour every last corner of that mediocre food chain and find The Harbinger, even if it was the last thing I did.

I start the car and drive back down the Catskills, but as I'm rounding the corner to get onto the highway, I hear something moving in the seat behind me, rustling around. At first, I figured some kind of animal had climbed into my car overnight to try to escape the meteor when it hit, and then I see a flash of pink hair and sparkles.

"What in the actual fuck?" I turn around while I'm driving, against my better judgment, and I come face to face with what can only be described as a living nightmare.

He was dressed in a perfectly ironed shirt, a bright pink blazer, and a pink bowtie. His hair looked like something you'd see in a generic Sports Clips that charged five dollars a haircut and brushed right below his rounded chin. There was an air of innocence about him, but his eyes were this pitch-black color, and the pupils were so big that they freaked me the hell out.

"H-hello," He stammers, and lifts his hand in a little wave, "I'm Felix."

I let out an unholy scream and stomped on the brakes right in the middle of the road, sending the car to a screeching halt and my head pitching forward at breakneck speed.

"Who the fuck are you?" I holler when I turn around again, "How the hell did you get in my car?!"

"I can explain!" The freak in the backseat of my car protests, holding up both his hands this time in a failed effort to diffuse the situation. "I was looking for someone! You might have seen him, or maybe even heard of him! Ender Calloway? The Harbinger?"

Oh, God.

This guy was looking for Ender, just like I was. It really made me wonder how many guys he'd convinced to date him and then kill him over the last couple of months and which number it made me on the list.

"Get the shit out!" I snarl at Felix, and I unlock all the car doors with a click and point to the road. "I have a gun, and I'm not afraid to use it!"

"Oh! Are you talking about this gun?" Felix replies innocently and holds up my gun, then promptly fires three rounds into the ceiling of my car, plastic and metal flying all over the place.

Both of us scream like little girls, and then Felix throws the gun out the window like it's a piece of rotten meat, still screaming until it lands in the nearby bushes and on top of some innocent cat that yowls in anger before bolting down the road.

"I'm so sorry!" Felix blurts, "I waited by Ender's car all night, but he never showed up, so I decided to take a nap in what I'm assuming was your car. But then you started driving, and I didn't really know what to say until you were halfway down the road."

I take a deep breath through my nostrils. "Get out," I tell him as calmly as I can, "I don't know anybody named Ender Calloway. Whatever you're looking for, it's not here."

Felix shuts his mouth and eyeballs me a little before quietly opening his door and climbing out.

"He's the Harbinger, right?" Felix asks me when he steps outside and stands there in the blazing heat in his weird little pink suit and bowtie. "I've been looking for him for a while now, but he's good at disappearing. He lived in Connecticut for a while and in New Jersey."

I tighten my hands on the steering wheel.

"If you see him," Felix says, slamming his door closed. "Tell him that the Death Bringer's looking for him."

Oh Felix, you’re not supposed to sleep in other people’s cars randomly or fire their gun into the roof and then scream about it. 🤭

Also, Ender, ghosting Hector is rude.

As the Harbinger, he’s cursed to reset the world with every death. The only problem? He can’t do it alone. Enter Hector Navaro, his reluctant companion and the only one who remembers what came before, who has to end his life before the clock runs out.

Hector swore he wouldn’t get attached. He didn’t plan on caring. But when you’ve watched someone die a hundred times—when they look at you like you're the last person they trust—it's hard not to break.

As secrets unravel and a mysterious stranger offers a way out of the cycle, Hector faces an impossible choice:

Let Ender live… and risk the end of everything.

Or follow fate, one last time.
