Two days had passed since the raid began. During that time the company had to be shut down. So far, they had found no drugs in the company. Other than that, none of the officers had found a single lead regarding the case.
Min-young tried to call Liam several times. However, no one picked up. The officers assigned to keep an eye on Liam reported that there were no strange behaviors by the suspect.
Nam-gil was leaning on his desk looking at the photos of the crime scene. Just then he received a phone call from Chae-Yong.
Nam-gil picked up the call and turned on the speaker, "I was expecting your call. How is work going?"
"Work my foot! Our company has been closed for two days now. Do you have any idea how much money we've lost already?!"
"I'm sorry about that but I can't help it."
"Anyway, I've looked into the drug sample you gave me the other day."
"What did you find?"
"It certainly is a new drug. Taking the drug can make the user feel euphoric, positive, wide awake, and generally very confident. The side effects are pretty severe though. When the drug enters the bloodstream, it won't metabolize like other drugs. It will stay there. And the longer it stays in the bloodstream, the more problematic it becomes. The user will begin to vomit blood, lose his sense of smell, and cause severe nerve damage. And finally..."
"Finally what?"
"Brain death."
This was quite shocking to hear for Nam-gil. Just imagining this drug being mass-produced made his head hurt. "Alright. Thank you." He hung up.
"Did you hear everything?" Nam-gil asked.
"Yeah," said Min-young who was sitting on a chair next to the desk.
"I was informed this morning that Team B found the people responsible for the Dongjak bridge incident. The case was then handed to the higher-ups."
"Hmmm..."
"What?"
"I want to talk to the captain of Team B."
In Team B's office.
While waiting for the captain of Team B, Min-young tried to reach Liam. After a few minutes, the captain entered the office. She looked at Min-young and said, "You must be the new transfer officer. Min-young, right?"
"Yes."
"I'm Seong Haneul, captain of Team B. Nice to meet you." The two officers shook hands. "So, is there anything I can help you with?"
"Do you know who Gae Baek-Hyun is?"
Haneul's eyes narrowed. She walked towards a shelf and pulled out a case file. It was about the death of two lab workers. She said, "Yes, I do know him. He cooperated with us to help solve the case. But we haven't been in contact after the case was closed."
"What type of person was he?"
Haneul's response to this question was similar to the others. Nam-gil explained the details of the case to her.
"Well, all I can say is that Gae Baek-Hyun is not the type of person who would use drugs or sell them."
Min-young further questioned her about the case she investigated.
An hour went by. "We were very close to finding the murderer...but then...we were forced to close the case. It was the chief's orders. The news came out as two drug addicts who died due to drug overdose."
"Any idea why the chief ordered to close the case?"
"Nope."
"Alright. That's all I wanted to know."
Min-young and Nam-gil left Team B's office. "File a missing person report on Gae Baek-Hyun," said Min-young. He then took out his phone.
"Are you gonna try calling Liam again?" asked Nam-gil. "Don't you think it's pretty useless at this point? I already have men on him."
"I will try one last time. If he doesn't pick up, I will meet him in person."
After a few seconds, someone picked up the phone this time. Min-young looked at Nam-gil and turned the speaker on.
"Yes, what do you want Liam?" It was a woman's voice. Both of them were puzzled. Was the phone number Liam gave belong to someone else? What was even more confusing was that the person they were talking to thought that she was talking to Liam.
"I don't have all day Liam."
"May I know who this is?"
"Liam, if you called me for some dumb reason, I'm hanging up."
Nam-gil took the phone from Min-young's hands. "We're the police."
"The police?!" The woman immediately hung up.
"What the hell was that?!" Nam-gil asked. Both of them were equally confused.
All of a sudden, Do-yun came running. His expression felt as if it was something very serious. "We...We found Gae Baek-Hyun."
"What?! Where?" asked Nam-gil.
"Well...to be more precise...we found his body."
The body was found by some local fishermen. The scene was quite far away from the Incheon Police Station. Some of the local police officers in that area also got involved. It took 2 hours to arrive at the scene.
They were guided to the place where the body was kept by the officer in charge. The fishermen who found the body were also there and were being questioned. Nam-gil asked one of the officers where the body was. The police officer pointed toward a boat. There laid a motionless body of a man.
Nam-gil gave a nod to the forensic team to carry out their work. Min-young asked one of the fishermen how they found the body.
"Well, we were just out fishing. We lowered the net into the water. When we pulled it back up, it was full of fish. We then opened the net on the deck to see if there was any unwanted trash we brought up along with fish. Then I noticed a hand sticking out of the heap of fish. We then found out that it was a dead body. We were all freaked out. We called the police and we were told to bring the body to shore."
One of the officers handed a wallet to Nam-gil. "We found this in the deceased's pocket."
Nam-gil found an ID card inside the wallet which had the name and picture of Gae Baek-Hyun. "It is definitely him."
Min-young jumped into the boat and walked toward the body. Chan-yeol was observing the body closely.
The face of the deceased looked as if it had been smashed by something big. He could barely be recognized.
"So, what can you say?" asked Min-young.
"It's too cold here. I can't accurately tell the time of death. The muscles and joints have completely stiffened up. The irises have changed shape. Based on this, the body is definitely more than a month old. The cause of death seems to be a heavy impact by a blunt object to the head."
Photos were taken and the body was then placed in a body bag and taken to the police station. Chan-yeol began to dissect the body in the autopsy room with the help of some of his assistants. The others waited outside for the autopsy and post-mortem report.
"So this means Gae Baek-Hyun is not on the suspect list anymore," said Hwan.
"That seems to be the case. With this, we can safely say that someone tried to frame him. The question is who," said Nam-gil.
"It could be Ethan. He has a copy of the house key," said Ji-Won
"Possible," said Min-young. "Wait a minute!" Min-young barged into the autopsy room and asked Chan-yeol if he found any key on the deceased.
"Do you not know how to knock? And no, I didn't find any key on him."
Min-young then closed the door. "The murderer must have taken the key away from him after he died."
"How do you know he had a key on him?" Nam-gil asked.
"I don't. But it is possible. If one copy is with Ethan, then where would the original be?"
"Well, you're not wrong."
Just then Nam-gil received a phone call from one of the officers he assigned to Liam Jong.
"Hello?"
"Captain, we have a problem."
"What problem?"
"It's Liam. He just ran out of his house and took a taxi...He had a gun in his hand."
