The door to the chief's office was slammed open and Min-young barged in.
"CHIEF! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!"
The chief looked at Min-young whose eyes were filled with anger. Nam-gil entered the office and stood beside Min-young. He bowed to the chief. "I apologize for my colleague's rude behavior, chief." He then grabbed Min-young's hand and tried to pull him away. However, Min-young pushed him away and said, "I'm not leaving until I get my answers."
The chief stood up and walked toward Min-young. There was only half a finger space between them. "You must be the new transfer officer, right? Quite the attitude you show to your superiors."
Min-young didn't answer but instead stared into the chief's eyes.
"What do you want?" the chief asked.
"Why are you closing the case?"
"What do you mean? You've already found the murderer."
"Liam Jong was not the murderer! Well, he was indeed the one who did it. But there is someone else behind this. We still don't know anything about the mysterious money transfer from the deceased's bank account!"
"I understand what you are saying. But this case has already been made public. The longer this case drags on, the more problematic it will be for us. The media will begin to question us more. If it was an average citizen who was murdered, they would forget about it in a week. But the one who died was someone well-known to the public. I also have things on my side that I need to handle. I have a reputation to keep."
"Is that all you care about?! The real murderer is still out there roaming around freely and you're talking about your reputation right now?!"
The chief walked to the table to pick up his coat. "Don't...question me. Now if you'll excuse me...I have somewhere to be right now. I have a very tight schedule today."
Min-young sighed, "No wonder the crime rates in Incheon are so high."
"Did you say something?"
"...Yes, I did."
The chief walked toward the door. "Well, then you'll have to speak up a bit."
Min-young slightly raised his voice. "I said that it's because of people like you that the crime rates in Incheon are so high."
The chief's eyes widened. It seemed that he had lost his cool. "YOU DARE-"
Just then Min-young clenched his fists and sent a punch across the chief's face. Nam-gil's jaw dropped after seeing this. It was the first time in his life that he saw an officer showing that much amount of disrespect to the chief. Alright, I'm out. Forget I was even here.
Nam-gil walked out of the office and closed the door. He then stood next to the door leaning with his back against the wall.
...
All of a sudden, the door blew open and Min-young came out flying. He hit the wall and collapsed on the ground. A few seconds later, the chief came out. His eyes were filled with rage.
"Officer Min-young! I get that you're new here...But you need to know your place. As of now, you are demoted from your rank of captain."
The chief then put his coat on and turned to Nam-gil. "Take him away."
"Yes sir!"
The chief walked away while making a gesture with his right hand as if it was hurting.
Nam-gil approached Min-young to help him. But to his surprise, Min-young stood up on his own. He placed his hand on his gut. His expression seemed like he was in a bit of pain.
"H-how...how are you standing up?" Nam-gil asked.
"What do you mean?"
"N-nothing. Never mind..." Nam-gil helped Min-young walk to Team A's office. "Did you have to punch him across the face?"
However, Min-young did not answer. When he entered Team A's office, he was greeted by several curious eyes. Everyone was itching to know what happened. Looking at everyone's faces, Min-young only uttered four words, "None of your business."
He then walked slowly towards a window and took a seat. He then looked at Nam-gil and said, "You dare tell them what happened."
...
After a few minutes, Min-young received a phone call from Ji-Eun.
"Hello?"
"I GOT A RAISE! I GOT A RAISE!" Ji-Eun screamed with joy on the other side of the phone.
"Well, someone's very happy."
"Why wouldn't I be? I made the headlines. Oh, congratulations on finding the culprit by the way."
"Congratulations my foot..." Min-young continued to explain the matter about closing the case.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team silently went to Nam-gil and asked what happened. Nam-gil then looked at Min-young to make sure he wasn't paying attention. He then began to narrate the story of what happened inside the chief's office.
After listening to the entire story, Ji-Won exclaimed, "So captain, you're saying that he took a blow to the gut by the chief and stood up?!"
"Yes...even I was just as surprised as you are."
Dae-jung began to laugh, "Oh please, surely you are joking, captain. Till now I have not met a single person who stood up after receiving a punch from the chief."
In the Incheon police agency, it was kind of like a tradition. The new officers had to receive a punch from the chief. This was done to bring a sense of discipline into the new officers. However, they weren't normal punches. Even Nam-gil was unconscious for three whole hours after getting punched by the chief when he first joined the agency.
Dae-jung continued to laugh. But after looking at Nam-gil's serious expression, he stopped. "So you're not joking."
They all looked at Min-young who was still busy talking to Ji-Eun on the phone. Nam-gil told all of his subordinates to not talk about this matter anymore and pretend that they never heard of it in the first place.
On the other hand, Min-young also concluded his explanation.
"So...I guess it can't be helped then," said Ji-Eun.
"Yeah..."
"Anyway, enough about this boring talk. You said we'd catch up after the case was closed, right?"
"Ahh, yes. About that."
"Let's talk face-to-face, okay?"
"Okay...where'd you want to meet?"
"Hmmm let's see. How about XX Cafe?"
"Uhh yeah, okay."
"6:30 p.m. Don't be late." Ji-Eun hung up.
Min-young looked at his watch. It was 5:10 p.m. He got up from his seat and walked toward the exit. On his way out he said, "Ahh Nam-gil, I'm going to get off work early today. There still a lot of things I need to handle."
"Ahem!"
"What?"
"Don't you think you're being a bit too informal with me?"
"What do you mean-" Just then Min-young remembered that he was demoted from his rank. He gritted his teeth and said, "Requesting permission to get off of work early...Captain Nam-gil."
Nam-gil then smiled pleasingly. "Permission granted."
Min-young then walked out of the office and slammed the door close behind him. As soon as he left the office, all the officers burst out in laughter. Even Nam-gil couldn't hold back.
