She steps up to the line, ball in hand and readies herself, a neutral but focused look on her face. Teach watches her closely.
Teach ‘You’ve been training for years now. You’ve practiced and repeated our routines perfectly despite all your opposition but now you have a chance to use the power you seek to control. What will you do? Hide it? Or use it?’ “Tell me Wolf Anderson, what is it that you seek?”
He says as Wolf pulls her arm back.
Wolf ‘All my life I’ve been training to control my power. The power my friends aren’t even aware I have.’
She thinks as she looks at her friends.
Wolf ‘The only thing I want is the power to protect them. But first, I need to control it, I can’t lose control, not again.’
She thinks back to the Oats Mall attack and the moments she started losing control before flashing another memory of her bloody hands. She shuts her eyes and looks down a bit.
Wolf ‘This place is the place to do it.’
She thinks before looking up sharply.
Wolf “So no holding back.”
She pulls her arm back and prepares to throw the ball with all her might as the black mist from before forms around her arm. This time, her friends notice it.
Killian “Woah! Look at her arm!”
Moshiro “I guess everyone’s unlocking new powers now.”
She says with an upset look. Wolf then launches the ball with force unlike anything they’ve seen as the ball smashes not just into the wall but completely through it, blowing it to pieces. Everyone is shocked as a rumble is felt throughout.
Machine “Wolf Anderson. Brolite Speed Unreadable. Error. Try Again.”
It says as Teach is even shocked. Wolf pants for a moment as she stands up. She turns to Cole with a drained look and a smirk.
Wolf “See? Now that’s.. real power…”
She manages to spit out before her eyes roll back and she collapses on the ground. The others rush to her side.
Phoenix “Wolfy! Are you okay!?”
Killian “Yo! Answer me, bro!”
They look panicked as Teach sighs and shakes his head, sweating a bit.
Teach “And that is Soul Exhaustion.”
They turn and look at him confused and seeking answers.
Teach “Every Soul has a certain amount of Soul Fuel used in everything you do. From running to blasting Kozen, it all burns Soul Fuel in varying amounts. Despite being able to grow your amount through training and it replenishing on its own, you can burn it all leaving you high and dry with nothing left. When that happens, your body gives out.”
Saika “So she’s gonna be okay?”
Cole “With any luck, no.”
Alston punches him in the arm as he winces.
Teach “Burning all your Soul Fuel is not a good idea as it can lead to Soul Exhaustion which can lead to worse affects but in minor cases like this, she’ll be just fine.”
He says with a slight smile as the crew sighs. Wolf pants on the ground with a tired look.
Wolf “Soul Exhaustion… right. Got it…”
She says, trying to catch her breath. Phoenix looks down at her with a slightly pouty look.
Phoenix “Don’t ever do that again.”
She says softly with a relieved look and tears in her eyes as Wolf smiles.
Wolf “Hey, you know me.”
Phoenix rolls her eyes before smiling warmly, petting Wolf’s head as Wolf giggles.
Teach “Alright, come on. Let’s get you to the infirmary and let you rest for a while. The rest of the class and I still have-”
As he speaks with his back turned to them, Wolf starts to get up before stretching her arms over her head.
Wolf “Nah, don’t worry about it. I’m feeling all better now. I might even be able to go again.”
She says as Teach is shocked and looks at her surprised.
Teach “Ah.. Well, if you’re feeling fine then I suppose there’s no need.”
He says as she giggles again.
Teach “Well then, let’s move on to the training hall and I’ll show you around.”
He motions for them to head to the hall as the class goes. He stands there for a moment, confused at the events that just took place.
Teach ‘Wolf has always had a bigger Soul than the others but… she shouldn’t have that much Soul Fuel.’
He thinks while staring at the smashed wall on the ground.
Teach ‘And that recovery. Even if she did have more Soul Fuel than I realized, only Tier 4s and 5s have that kind of recovery rate. What is going on with that girl’s Soul?..’
He thinks with examining eyes as he stares at her.
Eventually the class comes to an end as they get changed back into their other outfits. They leave as Teach watches them and waves them off.
Teach “I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. That’s when the prep training begins for the Eval Tournament so make sure you show up.”
He says as a few of the students wave back with smiles on their faces. Moshiro then steps next to him with a blank look on her face. Teach notices her as she begins to speak.
Moshiro “Teach. When I entered the academy, they ran all the normal tests. They’re extremely thorough. Did they… find anything?..”
She asks softly as Teach sighs a bit, looking at her softly knowing the truth.
Teach “No. It seems you just weren’t born with a Type.”
Moshiro presses her lips together tightly as her eyes get glossy. She nods slightly a few times.
Moshiro “Right… right…”
Teach gives a soft look as he faces her and crouches in front of her.
Teach “Hey, don’t worry about it.”
She begins to cry a bit as tears roll down her cheeks. She lowers her head trying to hide behind her bangs as she rubs her eyes with her hands.
Teach “There are plenty of heroes out there who don’t have Types either.”
Moshiro “I know… I just… I don’t think I can be as strong as them… I… just want to be a good hero…”
She says between sniffles and tears. Teach sighs and gently grabs her wrists, pulling them towards him to try and get her not to hide.
Teach “Ay, Moshi. You’re not going to be a good hero. You’re gonna be great.”
He says while pulling her in for a hug as she sobs into his shoulder for a moment.
Teach “You’re my prized pupil. There won’t be anything you can’t do once I’m done with you.”
They pull back as she nods a bit and stops crying.
Moshiro “Right.”
Teach stands back up as he pats her head.
Teach “Keep your chin up kiddo. You’ve got a long road ahead of you and only greatness to come.”
She nods again, a soft smile on her face.
Moshiro “Thanks Teach.”
Teach “Now get going. You’ve got friends waiting and friends to make.”
He slaps her on the back causing her to stumble forward a bit before she catches herself and chuckles a bit. She waves as she catches up to the others. He watches her with a warm smile.
Teach “My daughter…”
He says softly.
Later that night, in the dorms community area, the class hangs out. Some in pajamas and some in casual wear.
Saika “How long do you think it’s gonna take for us to get our own rooms?”
Tadashi “We aren’t assigned ones until we get designated Hunter or Vanguard along with our partners.”
Saika “And that is..?”
Tadashi “After the Eval Tournament. Weren’t you paying any attention?”
Saika “I got distracted! You know how short my attention span is! I don’t do well in lectures.”
Killian “Yeah, but have you seen the size of the rooms? I don’t think they’re rooms at all, they look like whole apartments!”
Wolf “I feel sorry for whoever your partner is then.”
Killian “What? Saying you wouldn’t want to live with me?”
Wolf “That all depends. Bet you’d want me to be your little housewife, huh?”
She says teasingly, leaning closer a bit. Killian smirks cockily as he leans closer too.
Killian “Bet you’d like that wouldn’t you?”
He teases back as they lean close before Tadashi interrupts them.
Tadashi “Not in front of the child, guys.”
He says while cleaning his sword once again.
Saika “Hey! I’m not a child! And where do you keep getting that thing?”
He asks as Wolf and Killian giggle, Wolf sticking her tongue out.
Yoko “Hey hey hey Wolf dog!”
They shout as they rush up behind her. Wolf sighs frustratedly.
Wolf “How many times am I gonna have to say it? It’s just Wolf. Not human dog, not Wolf dog, just Wolf- woah!”
She turns as she speaks before a large bookshelf is slammed down in front of her.
Yoko “Behold! I have crafted you a bookshelf! Where I come from, this is a symbol for love! I think…”
They say with a pondering look while staring at the poorly made shelf. Wolf sweats.
Wolf “Great. Well, I love you too I guess?”
Yoko’s eyes light up with excitement.
Yoko “Really?! I mean, of course you do! I am a powerful dragon and you are only a human. It’s only natural to love me. Isn’t that right, other humans?”
They ask proudly as Saika, Tadashi and Killian pay them no mind.
Killian “Got any 8s?”
He says, suddenly playing a card game out of nowhere. Yoko is shocked.
Yoko “A game of cards! I must play and best you masculine human for I cannot allow what occurred earlier to maintain!”
They jump in and grab a hand of cards. They stare at it for a moment before smirking and slamming the hand down.
Yoko “Ahha! I have won! Observe.”
They reveal to be holding a few cards, a coupon, and a sticker in no particular order. The others sweat as Wolf chuckles and shakes her head, looking around. She then notices Phoenix stepping outside for a moment. Wolf watches her with an interested look. Outside, Phoenix stares at her hand. She examines it with a confused look.
Phoenix “I know I’m strong but that throw was ridiculous. What happened? My hand did feel a little different…”
She says to herself as she snaps her fingers in an attempt to recreate the feeling from earlier. Nothing happens and she looks upset so she does it a couple more times when suddenly the same kind of flame ignites from her hand. She is shocked and jumps back a bit but then smiles.
Phoenix “W-woah! Now that’s cool. Since when did I have a power?? What even is it? I should show Wolf, she could probably figure it out.”
She is surprised then confused then confident in Wolf’s ability to categorize it before being startled by a voice.
Alston “Getting some late night practice in?”
She asks as Phoenix shakes her hand, dissipating the flame. Alston smiles at her as Phoenix calms herself a bit.
Phoenix “Haha yeahhh I guess so. Not quite sure what it is exactly. Teach made it easy and explained their powers to the others but not me…”
She pouts as Alston giggles.
Alston “I get why you were the first thing she brought up now.”
She says cooly as Phoenix looks at her surprised.
Phoenix “What?”
Alston “Wolf. We were catching up since it's been awhile and one of the first things she told me about was you and how you met her. I understand why that is now.”
Phoenix blushes a little and rubs the back of her head while looking away awkwardly.
Phoenix “Aw, really? Probably just cause I yell at her all the time.”
Alston “Hm.”
She hums with a smile on her face before getting closer to Phoenix. Phoenix looks confused a bit as Alston examines her.
Alston “I think I’m beginning to see the appeal too. Just look at this body. And no, it wasn’t the yelling. She told me how when she was at her lowest, when she was all alone, it was you who came to her. You chose to be her friend when everyone looked past her.”
She says while checking Phoenix out. At first she was flustered but gets caught up in Alston’s words.
Phoenix “She.. really said that?.”
She asks with a blush from the thought of Wolf’s words for a moment before her look drops just a bit.
Phoenix ‘I guess I… kinda liked the idea of being the only one there for her… but now she has so many friends. Old ones, new ones. I probably won’t… be so special for long…’
She thinks with a softly sad look on her face. Alston stops and looks at her warmly.
Alston “You really don’t realize how important you are, do you?”
She asks softly as Phoenix looks at her with a blush on her face and confusion in her eyes, snapping her out of her thoughts, before Alston smirks and closes her eyes, throwing her arms behind her head.
Alston “Whatever. I don’t know you well enough to care just yet.”
Phoenix snaps out of her thoughts and pouts a bit at Alston’s words.
Phoenix “Gee, thanks…”She stares at Alston as she looks off into the night sky for a moment before Phoenix speaks.
