"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case. My client, Sarah Marvin, has been wrongfully accused due to the bias and incompetence of the police department. She has provided a solid alibi, and the prosecution has failed to present anything beyond circumstantial evidence. I urge you to see the truth and deliver a verdict of not guilty in favor of my client. Thank you."
Phew...
"Thank you so much, Miss Harrington! I don't know what I would've done without you", Miss Marvin, my client, managed to get the sentence out while sobbing uncontrollably on my shoulder. I patted her back, a little embarrassed.
"It's my pleasure, Miss Marvin. I'm glad I was able to win the case for you." I said reassuringly as she wiped her tears. "Please let me know if I can help with your job search". I smiled at her gently, picking up my briefcase.
"Can we drop you off somewhere?", I asked as we made our way out of the courtroom.
"Thank you but no need. My sister is here. And I need to go pick up my boys from the foster home.", she was on the verge of crying again as she said the last part. I patted her back, giving her silent encouragement.
"Good work today. Miss Harrington", Steve said as he carefully backed the car out of the parking lot. I smiled. "You too, Steve. We were able to catch on to the detective's misogynistic ways because of you", I flopped my head on the backrest with a sigh.
I hope Miss Marvin can get back on her feet soon. Too many people get destroyed in this game of law. When I was little, I wanted to become a lawyer for all the right reasons. Serving justice and fighting for peace, yada yada... But I soon got the reality check that the law only extends to how much power you have or how much proof.
I should know, after all.
Miss Marvin was made to stay in custody for two weeks, her sons were taken from her and placed in foster care for days until her sister was able to arrive from the other corner of the world. Why? All because of a detective's bias against single mothers. He practically framed her in the guise of following some flimsy piece of evidence that was actually a receipt of a $200 restaurant bill paid from a corporate card. For a client meeting, as we later proved.
Sigh.
"You're coming to Noah's birthday party, right?", Steve's question jerked me out of my gloomy thoughts.
I smiled at him "Of course, How could I not come to my little munchkin's birthday?". Noah was the cutest baby I've ever seen. I absolutely loved that boy. He was so damn cute with pink chubby cheeks and hazel eyes.
"Hey!" He exclaimed as if remembering something," Soph was asking if you are free this weekend so you two could go out shopping. She loves your choices"
I internally rolled my eyes at this. It's not my choice she loves, she just loves talking, and trying to get me to socialize was her favorite pastime.
I opened my mouth to say something but he cut me off.
"Oh I know you are free this weekend. You don't have a social life and your calendar is empty as well.", He looked at me triumphantly.
I grumbled, "You are abusing your power as my secretary!". He just chuckled in answer.
"Damn", I muttered and huffed," Fine, I'll come over this weekend".
