Awaken: Dying Light

Seeds of First Friendship

Seeds of First Friendship

May 26, 2024

As their laughter subsided, a comfortable silence settled between them. Elora, no longer the intimidating figure from before, sat down on the plush carpet, the griffin resting on her lap. Jayden, nestled on a nearby pillow, gurgled contentedly, his tiny hand reaching out to touch the edge of her leather suit.

Jayden, sensing her shift in mood, decided to push his luck a little further. With a mischievous glint in his eyes (or at least, that's what he hoped it looked like), he let out a loud, drawn-out cry. Elora flinched, startled by the sudden noise.

"Oh, no! Did Auntie Elora scare you?" she cooed, her voice laced with concern as she scooped him up in a surprisingly gentle embrace. Despite himself, Jayden found himself relaxing slightly in her arms. The warmth of her touch was strangely comforting, a stark contrast to the cold, sterile feeling of his crib.

"There, there," she soothed, rocking him gently back and forth. "Don't cry, little one. Auntie Elora is here now." As she spoke, a low hum emanated from her, a calming vibration that resonated deep within him. His eyelids grew heavy, the sound and rhythm lulling him into a state of drowsiness.

Just as sleep began to claim him, a sliver of awareness flickered within him. 'Wait,' he thought, a spark of defiance reigniting. 'I can't fall asleep! I need to know what's going on!' He squeezed his eyes shut tight, determined to stay awake.

The struggle was real. The warmth of Elora's embrace, the gentle hum, and the sheer exhaustion from his constant vigilance all conspired against him. His eyelids fluttered open and closed, the battle between sleep and determination waging within him.

Suddenly, the door creaked open, a shaft of light slicing through the dimness of the room. Ruele rushed in, her face etched with worry. Relief flooded her features as her eyes met Jayden's. "There you both are! I was starting to get worried," she exclaimed, her voice laced with relief.

Taking Jayden from Elora's arms, Ruele cradled him close, showering him with kisses and whispered reassurances. Jayden snuggled into his mother's embrace, a sense of overwhelming relief washing over him. He may not have understood everything, but he knew he was safe with her.

Ruele looked at Elora, her gaze filled with unspoken questions. Elora simply shrugged, a hint of amusement dancing in her icy blue eyes. "He just doesn't like me," she muttered under her breath, clearly disappointed at her failed attempt to connect with Jayden.

Despite Elora's flippant remark, Ruele's gaze lingered on her for a long moment, her expression unreadable. A silent exchange passed between them, a conversation conveyed through a flicker of an eyebrow raise and a subtle tightening of the jaw. Ruele seemed to reach a silent decision.

"Alright, Elora," Ruele finally spoke, her voice firm yet laced with a hint of warmth. "Let's try a different approach. Perhaps some fresh air will do us all some good." She glanced down at Jayden, who was now peacefully nestled in her arms, his tiny breaths a soft rhythm against her chest.

Elora simply nodded, her gaze lingering on Jayden for a moment longer before she followed Ruele out of the room. As the door shut behind them, the silence returned, broken only by Jayden's soft cooing. Exhausted from his internal struggle, he drifted off to sleep, his dreams filled with fleeting images of griffins soaring through a starlit sky and a woman with eyes like glaciers, a woman who both scared and soothed him in equal measure.

The following morning, a gentle breeze rustled through the leaves of the trees in the mansion's sprawling gardens. Sunlight dappled the ground, casting playful shadows on the soft grass. Ruele, dressed in a flowing white dress, strolled through the gardens, a peaceful smile gracing her lips. Jayden, nestled comfortably in a sling against her chest, gurgled contentedly, his tiny hand grasping at the fabric of her dress.

Elora followed a few paces behind, her leather suit replaced by a pair of rumpled khaki pants and a brightly colored tunic adorned with what looked suspiciously like cartoon griffins. Her expression remained a playful mask, hiding any lingering disappointment from the previous day.

As they walked, Ruele pointed out different flowers and trees, narrating their names and stories in a soft, soothing voice. Jayden, however, seemed more interested in the disgruntled-looking squirrel Elora was trying (and failing) to coax with a trail of breadcrumbs.

"See, Jayden," Elora chirped, her voice overly chipper, "Isn't he adorable? Just like a little furry warrior, wouldn't you agree?"

Jayden, unimpressed by the rodent's beady eyes and twitchy nose, simply stared at her with a deadpan expression. Elora, ever persistent, continued her efforts. She pulled out a series of brightly colored rattles from her pocket, each one adorned with feathers and bells. She shook them with exaggerated enthusiasm, but Jayden remained unfazed.

"Not a fan of the classics, huh?" Elora muttered under her breath, a playful pout forming on lips. She then reached into her pocket again, this time producing a miniature catapult fashioned from twigs and leaves. "Alright, how about a little target practice?" she asked, her voice laced with playful excitement.

Jayden's eyes widened for a moment, a flicker of interest sparking within him. However, before he could react, Ruele intervened with a gentle laugh. "Elora," she said, her voice laced with amusement, "perhaps we should save the war games for another day."

Elora, defeated but not discouraged, grinned at Jayden. Another time then, little warrior," she winked, earning a confused gurgle from the baby.

As they continued their walk through the gardens, Elora continued to try and capture Jayden's attention with a series of increasingly ridiculous antics – juggling pebbles, attempting (and failing) to impersonate a singing bird, and even making shadow puppets on the wall (which, according to her, depicted the thrilling tale of a brave griffin knight, although it looked suspiciously like a lopsided rabbit).

Jayden, despite himself, found himself cracking a tiny smile at Elora's fumbling attempts. He may not have understood everything, but he couldn't deny that the woman, for all her mysteriousness, was undeniably entertaining. And perhaps, just perhaps, under that tough exterior, there might be a friend waiting to be discovered.

As Ender grapples with his conscience, a blinding light engulfs him, changing everything. The connection between his actions and Jayden's rebirth remains shrouded in mystery, a whisper from beyond.

Now, in a world struggling to heal from the scars of war, an unexpected birth throws a wealthy family into chaos. Twins, a seemingly impossible occurrence in their lineage, arrive amidst a surge of strange energy. One of the babies bears an uncanny resemblance to a legendary warrior spoken of only in hushed tones.

As Jayden grows, fragmented memories of a past life begin to surface. He grapples with an unfamiliar world and a strange sense of responsibility. Could he hold the key to Ender's world's survival, or is he destined to repeat the cycle of pain and loss?
