Everything was so unreal. It was like a nightmare. Deep down, I wanted it to be a simple nightmare.
My mind went blank at the chaotic image in front of me. Monsters that only existed in fantasy stories. The destruction and the sky dyed gray by the smoke of the city's fire, so characteristic of an apocalyptic film. The beautiful sunset behind all that would have been something worth admiring in other circumstances, but now it only looks completely out of place and gives a terrifying armosfere.
I spent long seconds trying to analyze and understand what my eyes were seeing.
Until my mind reacted.
I looked at part of the city and terror invaded my body when I noticed that in a certain area there were more monsters than in the rest.
–T-That 's downtown.—I stuttered, feeling my body tremble.—Liam is downtown.
«No»
My body moved by itself, I started running on the pavement on my way to Downtown. I'm not strong, I know. But my body is small, maybe I can manage to go unnoticed and get to the building where the competition would be.
«Just wait Liam, I'm definitely going to find you»
I saw a black shadow from the corner of my eye and as if everything was in slow motion I turned to see what it was. I did it just at the moment when the new monster threw a pointed tentacle at me. I wanted to dodge it but my body was unable to do it completely.
The limb hit my right shoulder making me stagger backwards from the impact. I screamed because of the sudden pain. I felt like the end of the tentacle was embedded on the sides of my new wound, ready to pull me back towards that thing.
I lifted the katana and without worrying about whether it would work, I softened it hard, managing to make a clean cut. The monster screamed at the loss of one of his many tentacles and a strange black liquid gushed out of his mutilated limb.
My body continued to go backwards, and just as I thought I could regain my balance, a hard and cold surface stood in my way. I could only take one last look at the aberration in front of me before falling into the void.
The lower part of his body are ordinary legs, but the upper part is just those strange tentacles and smoke.
«How did he see or hear me... and how did he scream?»
I covered my body as best I could with my arms while I was rolling downhill. Being close to the outskirts of the city, the roads are in the high area, luckily not enough to kill me, but to break something. As soon as my body hit the ground, I felt a sharp pain in my ankle.
As I complain, I leaned on my elbows to start getting up. Unconsciously I looked up and for my luck there were no traces of my attacker.
«Thank God. I was able to cut his tentacle, but it's not like I could stab him like the one in the tunnel.»
I felt slowly because of the annoying pain that invaded every corner of my body. I touched and moved my ankle to check its condition and make sure it hadn't broken.
«Well, it's not broken» I looked at the surroundings and the fact that there wasn't a single sound worried me. "I have to move before another of those things arrives.
Something moved on my shoulder. I had to suppress my desire to take off the rest of the tentacle since I would have nothing to cover the wound with if I did. I got up trying to ignore the new and old pain in my body. A little dizziness hit me when I managed to get up. I took the katana and my glasses that had fallen one meter from me.
«I knew I should have bought the string for glasses»
It's annoying to know that from now on I'll be losing my glasses often. I'm even surprised that at this point I can still see something with them. Less than two minutes ago, but something.
I started walking between the houses using the sword as a cane.
I managed to go through two long blocks without bumping into any monster or human. I was relieved by it but my body was still completely tense, waiting for any possible enemy.
It wasn't until the middle of the third block that I saw a shadow urging through the garbage inside an alley. I thought about whether I should turn back or move forward. I soon realized that either of the two options could end in success or with a horrible result.
Ignoring the pain in my ankle, I stopped using the katana as a support and started walking on my toes as best I could. I bit my lip to avoid making a noise because of the discomfort of my wounds. I passed the alley and a crunch sounded over my head. Fearful I looked up and I met a creature more than two meters long that adhered to the wall of a house with its strong claws.
The beast with a pointed tail looked towards the sky, but when he felt my presence he looked at me sideways and his head turned one hundred and eighty degrees like an owl. His multiple cat eyes pierced me.
«Damn, will I have to fight again?»
My thoughts were interrupted by the cry of a person. Both the beast and I turned to see the fuss.
Another monster identical to this one had scared a girl with short hair by making her fall to the ground. He looked at her with predatory eyes while she trembled with fear. A grotesque squeal made him lose what she had left of sanity and raised a weapon that she held between his small hands.
«No. Don't do it. Stop.»
The first shot resumbled in the silent street and to the woman's bad luck the bullet did not hit her target. The shadow of the alley came out before the noise revealing a third beast.
The bullets continued to come out one after the other and I knew immediately that I had to get out of here soon. It's making too much noise, if there are more creatures around they won't hesitate to come and attack us. That girl dug her own grave.
A black blur passed by me with speed and I didn't know what it was until it was a couple of meters away from me. My own problem had jumped from the wall to go and attack his new prey.
Three against one, and she will run out of bullets soon. But there's nothing I can do. As soon as I survived after fighting a monster, I will never be able to beat three of them. Even if we are two people.
My moral part and my survival instinct had a great debate about what I should do. In the end, morale lost, not without first leaving a feeling of guilt behind.
I kept walking completely ignoring what was happening. I wanted to help, but I'm not strong. I will only die if I do it.
But apparently destiny didn't like my plan because when I crossed the street I appreciated another of those things on my way.
–Is this Karma?
He let out a big squeal and instantly my legs reacted. I ran down the street. Pieces of brick and glass fell to the ground as it slid over the houses and businesses. I barely ran a little when I felt my body reach its limit and the feeling was even worse because of my sprain.
A few seconds later, his resonant footsteps were already heard on me. Knowing that at any moment I would jump on me, I tried to devise a plan, but the pain and fatigue did not let me think clearly.
I don't know how to fight against that and I don't have enough time to analyze their movements or actions.
A direct fight won't work.
«Someone...please»
A small outst was heard on my side and was followed by a painful squeal. The beast covered one of his eyes from which dark green blood came out.
—Quick, this way!
At the end of one of the blocks there was a red-haired boy in sports clothes. A smoking weapon in his hands told me that it was he who attacked the monster.
