"Other than using their contractor's powers, a person can use mana. Mana can be used to enhance or emit and is the main source of power of the Peace Faction. Using and controlling mana was not discovered until after the human civil war of 2065."I went the extra mile as well, in an attempt to be a bit more like bus girl.
It was an impression she picked up on and one that she didn't seem to be very happy about as she glared into my soul before turning to face the front once more.
Mr.B gave a small grunt to indicate I had adequately answered his question and that I was free to sleep until the end of class. I tried my best to go back to sleep, but the last 10 minutes of the class felt close to 100 times longer than the first 70, because for some reason Mr.B decided he wanted to go through the class, person by person, telling everyone their strengths and weaknesses.I have to admit when he got to certain people, I was much more invested in hearing them get bashed rather than sleeping.
However for the rest of the class, I couldn't quite find a reason to care, I mean all this could be put on our report cards. But I think he just didn't like children.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
Just as he had gotten to me, the almighty god of education, the bell had protected me from evil and stopped Mr.B from spewing his lies and slander.I didn't wait for a single second before standing up from my desk and making a break for the door.
Once outside I navigated my way to school gates as discreetly as possible. I didn't like to ask for things, but I would very much like to finish school without toilet water in my mouth.Once outside I decided to skip out on the bus, and instead, I walked home.
The city wasn't the safest place to be in, but unlike school, as long as I didn't look at anyone for too long I would be fine. I timed it one day and it seemed like the average time needed for someone to try and attack me was 2 seconds of staring. This surprised me, as I thought these people had a radar that went off when I was in a 20-metre vicinity of them.
The tall and cramped together buildings lined up across the city streets didn't give me much to look at, but it did make me think. All the worn-down billboards and displays made me wonder what life was like before the Chosen. Before the war. Maybe everything would be normal, I wouldn't be shunned and outcasted, my parents would still be with me and life would be enjoyable.
As a puddle of water sprayed on my face from the idiotic driver who decided to drive a little too close to the curb, I decided that being too alone with my thoughts wasn't the best thing for me.
When I finally reached my house, I wanted nothing more than to get inside and sleep. I was deeply regretting walking, as well as regretting the fact that I didn't check to see that from the school to my house was a 2-hour walk. The only plus point of it all was that I wouldn't ever have to go back, and I guess the sunset looked pretty.
I had only been inside my house for 2 seconds before someone started to bang on my door. I quickly threw on a different set of clothes before going to open the door.
"Damon Ewell?"
I opened the door to the sight of two men in black suits, long trench coats, and funny-looking hats. They looked like characters straight out of the old cop movies I would watch with my parents when I was younger.
The men also looked nearly identical, the only thing separating the two was that one man had green eyes and the other blue.
"Who's asking?" I responded in my best effort to sound tough, praying they wouldn't look down to see the cute little dogs on my shorts.
"We're from the Adventurers Guild, we came to speak about your parents. We think we may have found them."
My whole body froze. If there weren't two people in front of me I may have fallen to the ground and had a little breakdown. But I quickly regained my composure. It's alright Damon, you've heard this before. It's probably just some other random couple they mistook your parents for.
After giving myself a fairly heart-touching pep talk I opened my door wider and motioned for the two to come inside.
"So, just what rundown-"
Phwark! Splat!
My whole body spasmed as the sweet and metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth before I coughed it out.
I look down to see the blood splatter on the ground, and the claw-like hand sticking through my chest. I turned around to see that blue eyes wiping my blood off his face, as well as pulling his hand out of my chest.
Then I could hear the sound of someone rummaging around in my room before green eyes came out holding a green book.
"Don't be too trusting, kid."
"Why are you advising a dead guy you sick f*ck."
"Shut up. Did you find the book?"
"Yeah, it was under the kid's bed. Come on, let's go."
As I fell to my knees and then face-first onto the cold hardwood ground below, I finally understood what 'your life flashes before your eyes' meant. The memories I had with my parents replayed in my head, a time before I had any worries, responsibilities, or doubts, a time when I was happy.
When I was younger, I wanted to grow up and be just like my parents, an adventurer. But then life dealt me a bad hand. When my parents were declared dead, my entire life was thrown into a downward spiral, continuously getting worse and worse.
The real reason I decided to live a "cowardly" life was because I was scared. I was scared that if I took risks, if I took one too many chances on the wrong side of the river, I would drown and I would end up like my parents.
I would constantly tell myself it was because if I wasn't alive and in perfect condition, I wouldn't be able to find and rescue my parents, but I was just lying to myself.
I was a scared little coward who didn't want to keep living without his mom and dad. That was what disgusted me. I allowed everyone to call me names, because in my mind they were right, I was everything they believed me to be.
If there was anything, and I mean anything I could have done to change my fate, to stand up in front of everyone and show them, show them that I wasn't just some weird freak, I would do anything to obtain that power.
'I can give you the power you seek.' A voice whispered into my ears.
At first, I thought it was one of the two men, but I had already watched as they left my house. Then I concluded that I had reached the point before death where I was hallucinating.Suddenly my emotions switched from regret and sadness to more humorous ones. I used all the energy I had remaining in my body to laugh.
My life is f*cking terrible.
I turned to lay on my back, accepting that I'd lost my mind.
"I… accept." I let out hoarsely, thinking I might as well hear my voice one last time.
'Your wish is my command.' The voice whispered once more, a tad bit more playfully, the voice being the last thing I remembered before the world went black.
