Hair Tie - Short Story

Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Jun 09, 2024

I was asleep when all of a sudden my phone started ringing. Like who would be calling at 3 in the morning. I looked at the caller I.D and it said Janae. I picked up the phone and answered it.

“If this is about the situation earlier it’s fine I shouldn’t have l-.” I stopped talking when the person on the other line didn’t sound like Janae’s squeaky high pitched voice. “Who is this?” I asked. All I could hear was harsh breathing on the other end. “Hello?”

“Sorry it’s me Levi do u know where my sister is? Is she at your house? Please say she is.” I hear his breath get harder and harder. “No, I’m sorry she’s not.” Then the line went blank.

I jumped out of bed rushing to The Wrights house. I knocked on the door and one bedroom light came on. I waited for the person to come down and open the door. I see Levi rushing down the stairs and he opens the door. “What are you doing here?” I looked at him confused like isn’t he the one who just called me saying he didn’t know where his sister was. “I’m here to check where your sister is.” He turned around leaving the door open, jestering for me to come inside.

I followed him up the stairs to Janae’s bedroom. “She just left a note saying she was going for a run at 1:50 but it’s already 3:35 and she’s still not here.” I picked up the note just staring at it. “Have you told your parents?” He shook his head no at me. “WHY?!? You need to tell them so they can have cops looking for her.” He just looked away. “I can’t have them stressing about anything else.” “So what?!? I think their daughter is more important than their feelings or stress!.” I said anger filling my voice.

All of a sudden he fell to the ground with his palms in his eyes, crying. Oh crap I hate when these things happen. I quickly rushed over to him patting his back gently telling him that it is alright that maybe she was planning to be out later.

He ended up falling asleep on my shoulder. I just sat there wondering then all of a sudden Levi’s phone started ringing with an unknown caller. I shook him quickly, grabbing the phone. He took the phone pressing the green button.

“LEVI!!! I need help. I'm being chased by a few guys in an alleyway. I’m at a payphone right now. Please!! Help me!!” Then silence once more. That seems to be the exit now and days. Levi rushed out of the bedroom before I could think I followed him. He ended up getting in his car telling to hurry and get in or stay. Of course I decided to go instead of rethinking my decisions.

We were driving to different alleyways that we could find. For someone who’s been born and raised here I didn’t really know some of these places were here.

Time went by and by and still nothing by the time we know it. It's 8 o'clock in the morning and we’ve been around this whole city/town.

“We need to tell someone right now. It could be too late if we don’t.” He just looked down without saying anything before driving to his house.

I got out of the car and so did he when we arrived. He went inside with me following pursuit. His parents were already in the kitchen eating breakfast.

“Hey kiddos, what are you doing? Go wake your sister up before school.” Mrs. Wright said me and Levi just looked at each other. I nodded my head for him to go on.

“She’s not here.” He said looking down at the floor. “She already left for school, that's the first.” Mrs. Wright says before getting up to make another cup of coffee. “No mom she’s gone she’s missing.”

Both Mr and Mrs. Wright looked up from what they were doing. They’re faces turning from happy and modest to frowns. They looked at each other then at us. “What do you mean she’s missing?” with her tone dropping. “She went for a run and ever came back last night.” “And you didn’t tell us then are you slow!?!” I flinched a little and from the corner of my eyes I could see he wasn’t used to comments of such kinds.

His parents were rushing calling the cops, neighbors etc. Just anyone they could. They all just sat there looking out the window. I didn’t know whether to leave or not so I stood there hoping my presence would give off some type of reassurance.

It was already 5 in the afternoon, still nothing. Mrs. Wright was crying and praying for the safe return of her child. They wouldn’t talk to Levi I guess ashamed how he didn’t tell them beforehand. I did feel bad for him and the whole family really.

“You wanna come with me to my bedroom?” I looked at him confused. I eventually comprehended what he said when he started up the stairs.

We were in his bedroom smelling of oak wood. Everything is organized. Something I didn’t expect. I sat at his desk chair while he sat on his bed looking at the band posters on his wall.

“It’s my fault..” He said slowly lifting his head to look at me. “I should’ve told my parents sooner you were right. She could’ve been found by now. I of course had to go find her myself but found nothing so she might be lying in a ditch somewhere her clothes all shredded.” He started crying. I could tell he was trying to hold it in.

I walked over to him and lifted his chin. Staring deeply into his eyes. “It’s not your fault even if you had told sooner there was no guarantee that she would have been found.”

“I still could’ve said something.” I just smiled our faces inches apart. I could feel his breath hitting my face. I slowly and gently leaned in for a kiss feeling our lips touch with every second. All of a sudden I’m on top of him. Him caressing my bare back. But I pulled away not wanting him to think this was all out of pity. “What’s the matter?”

“I don’t want you thinking I’m only doing this to keep your mind off of your sister.” I said, biting my lips.

“Even if you weren’t you still would do the trick.” He smiled. His smile is so ugh I don’t know how to explain it’s something.

Then I was pulled back into the kiss like I did him a few moments ago.

HV A NICE DAY!!! I thought the ending was great. I mean this chapter not the story. Though I do plan to keep it 10 chapters but idk we’ll see.
