Chapter 5: Unfamiliar Familiarities

Ever since that day, something's always felt... off. My body felt weird. Whenever I walked, I questioned how I walked, and how my arms moved.

"-mato," my sister snapped her fingers in my face. "C'mon, what's taking up that much of your thoughts?"

"Nothing." I said.

"Well, nothing seems to be pretty important, seeing how you are right now."

"I don't know." I replied.

She looked at me for a few moments and sighed. "You've been acting weird lately. Ever since that trip to the museum."

"It's not that bad."

"Yamato, this is the 8th time I had to wake you up from whatever you're thinking about," she snapped. "And that's only in the span of an hour. This isn't like you."

"I'm fine, really. I'm just a bit tired, that's all."

"You've been unlike yourself ever since that trip to the museum and you keep saying nothing's wrong. You'd tell me if something was wrong, right?"

I looked her in the eyes and comforted, "Yes, I would. Don't worry, Mitsuri, I'm just fine, see?"

She smiled in disbelief at me, and pulled me in for a hug. It felt warm, but why did it seem so unfamiliar?

"Well, we can do this homework later. You better get up and ready now," she pulled away.

"Why would I do that?" I asked, confused

"Uhh, cause it's almost 7 pm right now? You always go out with your friends on Friday."

"Oh, yeah... Just didn't realise the time."

"This is exactly what I was talking about," she sighed, as she got up and left the room.

I didn't want to worry her, but she was right. Everything feels so foreign to me. I got up and just as I was heading to my cupboard, I tumbled and barely caught myself on the bed frame.

I looked back at my legs, and got up again. I basically hopped the remaining distance, afraid I might fall again, and opened it to get my clothes.

When I opened it, I only saw colors. Dark green, blue, red... but that was it. I didn't recognise anything in front of me. I picked what I thought was a maroon shirt and dark blue pants, and just hoped for the best.

I put them on and glanced myself in the mirror. 'Myself? That's me?
But wasn't I..?' I shook off the thoughts, deciding the clothes looked fine, and headed out.

I walked down the stairs slowly, instinctively trying to avoid tumbling down again. When I got to the bottom of the stairs, my mom and sister were talking at the door frame, with a look of worry on their faces.

When they noticed me, their faces changed to that of surprise, but I could've sworn I saw mom's face be filled with even more worry.

"See? I told you something's wrong with him today!" My sister pointed at me.

"Yamato, dear. Why are you wearing that?" My mother asked. At this point I felt even more confused.

"What do you me- oh." I looked down and noticed I'd put on my school uniform. Uniform. Hangout. Night time.

"My bad, I was just in a hurry," I laughed. "I'll go change."

I ran up the stairs and back into my room, opened the cupboard, and had an idea. Idea.

I opened the door and called for my sister. "Mitsuri, can you help me pick out the clothes this time?"

"But you HATE me picking out your clothes." She climbed the stairs.

"Well, change is sometimes nice."

*****

And that was how I was once again reminded why I don't let my family pick out my clothes. Family.

I mean, it looked good, but that was a hell I don't want to experience again.

I looked at my outfit in the mirror. Gray hoodie, black pants. E-Wrist. Left hand. Wait... left hand?

I know it's the correct way to wear it, but I always put it on my other wrist. Same with watches, it just feels more comfortable. I put it on my right, and clicked the clock holographic button. A hologram popped up above it with the time. 7:12. Oh, crap.

I basically jumped down the stairs, quickly said goodbye, and left the house. It was only when I left the yard that it hit me. I didn't remember where we were going, and I couldn't go back in and ask. They're already worried enough.

I opened my hand, palm facing up, and a hologram similar to a phone screen materialised. I motioned for the contacts menu.

"Tomoya Abakiri." I called out, and a few second later, Tomoya's face popped up on the screen.

"What's up, man?" He asked while biting into some chips. "You're late, and why do you look like that?"

Behind him, I could see Haruno and Kosuki drinking something in the background while playing chess. I tried recalling the place by the background alone but to no avail.

"I know, and I asked Mitsuri to pick my clothes," I scratched my head. "But nevermind that now, I have a weird question."

"If anything's weird, it's what happened in just 3 days, but shoot your shot."

"Where are we meeting?"

His mouth froze open and he looked at me like he was about to drop what's in his hand.

"Yamato, are you okay?"

"Why is everyone asking me that today? I'm fine, people." I said as I started walking. "I don't remember where we agreed to meet, big deal."

By that time, Haruno had beaten Kosuki, who was now looking at the board in shock, and joined the conversation.

"It is weird, Yamato," he stated. "Because this is where we've been meeting every week for the past 3 years"

I couldn't even come up with anything to say. I just stared at him, dumbfounded.

"I'm coming to pick you up, we'll talk when you're here."

*****

"You weren't kidding, you didn't remember where we meet?" They asked me.

"No, I'm honestly as confused as you are."

"I really hate that mask, everything's been odd since that day." Tomoya said.

Haruno just looked at me in silence, not sharing any of his thoughts, while Kosuki played around with the chess pieces, like he couldn't be bothered.

As the silence grew, so did the tension. Eventually, Haruno clapped his hands together, "Well, all seems to be okay for now. We can think about this later."

Kosuki straightened his back at those words, "He's right. Yamato, come and play. I'm sure I can beat ya this time. I'll play black."

It annoyed me how carefree he was talking, but I kept that to myself. Nevertheless, I sat down to play against him.

"Pawn 2d to 4d." I started, and moved my pieces.

"7e to 5e."

"4d to 5e." I ate his pawn.

"Bishop 8f to 4b, check."

"2c to 3c."

"Knight 8b to 6c."

"2h to 4h."

"Knight 6c to 5e, I eat your pawn."

"Bishop 1c to 3e."

"Knight 5e to 3d, check."

"Queen to 3d."

"Queen to 6f."

"Bishop ro 5g."

"Queen to 3c, check." he said, beaming.

I looked at the board for a second and saw why. I smiled. This guy, he must really think I'm an idiot.

"Knight 1b to 3c."

"WAIT NO!" he suddenly yelled. Now the games really begin.

*****

After a couple rounds, the winner was clear. "Queen to 5h," I stated. "Checkmate."

I look up at him and see his hollow eyes staring at the board in disbelief. He must've really thought he could win.

"So you can forget about where we've been meeting for three years now," he yelled. "but you can't forget how to play che- are you
crying?"

"Why are you yelling?" I teared up. "I didn't do anything."

"I'm not yelling what are you talking about?"

"Yes, yes you are. You-" I hiccuped, tears falling down my cheeks. "You're yelling even though I did nothing wrong."

My vision gradually grew blurry. Blurry. As I tried to wipe my tears to no avail, everything went dark.

I woke up in my bed at home, confused how I got here. "Finally up?" I heard from beside me.

I turned my head to find my friends sitting on the floor, playing card games on the floor.

"AND I WIN! EAT THAT YOU PIECE OF-" Haruno slapped the back of Kosuki's head before he could continue whatever he wanted to say. Tomoya and I laughed at the sight.

"Are you going to tell us what's going on now?"

"What's going on with what?" I got off my bed, confused.

"What do you mean what, you idiot." Tomoya hurled a dice at my face. "This is the second time you've fainted ever since-"

"So, it's happened before, huh?" My sister's walked into the room, knife in hand. I felt goosebumps all over my body.

"Whathappenedbefore,Idon'tknowwhatyo-"

"You guys are really loud, you know." She sighed. "I heard everything, happy?"

"I'm sorry, Yamato." He turned to me, tearing up. I slapped the top of his head. It felt good.

"You're going to explain this to me right now."

"Your brother has superpowers and this is his side effect." Haruno chimed in while storing the cards back in their box.

"Cool. What are they?"

"Wait," I interrupted. "So that's it? No questions, no disbelief?"

"You've been acting off ever since the trip. It was either superpowers or dementia," she folded her arms. "you take a guess what sounds better."

I didn't even have the energy to argue back. I just sat down and pulled out the chess board out from under the bed, but I noticed Kosuki shaking and fuming as I did.

I wonder what happened today that made him like that. It was probably something I've forgotten.
