William
Lilian got off my back and started to walk back towards the exit before she stopped and faced me. Everything was dead silent and when she looked at me, I felt chilled to the bone. “So you’re the new guy everyone's talking about?” There was sarcasm tightly laced in her words, “I’m disappointed.” Turning around again, she left. I couldn’t help but think about what she had said. “So you're the new guy everyone's talking about?” It was true, I had no real talent unless you count lying as one. Picking myself up, I turned to face the rest of the class, expecting to see more disappointed looks but...are they applauding? Yes, they were applauding, though I couldn’t figure out why.
“Congratulations new kid!”
“Man that took some guts.”
I couldn’t help but laugh, “What are you guys talking about?”
“It's just that no one fights Lilian. Believe me, it's no big deal that you lost.”
I let out a relieved sigh. It's nice to know not everyone here is as intense as that girl. So her name is Lilian Burns? It suits her. Lily Burns. Lilian’s much like a lily that stands out in a field of wildflowers. She's...fierce.
When I first came to this school just a few hours ago, I thought that it would take me at least a week to find some friends. Surprisingly, I had all the company I needed. Sitting down at a table for lunch, people crowded left and right just to get a glimpse of me. Not gonna lie, the fame felt good. Now I’m popular for two reasons: I had killed a Level E and had been challenged by Lily on my first day of school. It was a lot to take in, to be honest. Amid everything, there was one person who seemed to notice how I felt.
The crowd parted and walking through it was a single girl. She seemed to be well-known in the school. It wasn’t like she was super flashy or anything, but she caught my attention. The girl had light beige skin and chestnut brown hair that faded to blond. She was striding right toward me. I couldn’t help but stare when she tapped me on the shoulder and asked, “Can I sit here?” She had such a nice voice. It took a minute for what she said to register in my brain before I blurted out, “Oh, yeah sure!” She smiled and took a seat in front of me. Everyone decided to go back to their conversations, filling the room with noise.
“So you're William, right?”
“Yeah. You are…?”
The girl extended her hand, “I’m Alexandra Cruz.”
“It’s nice to meet you.” As I shook her hand, thoughts flooded my head. That was too formal, right? We’re in the school cafeteria for Pete's sake! “Is it true that Lilian challenged you?” Alexandra’s voice snapped me back to reality, “It’s true.”
“Hm, she was a bit intense huh?”
A bit? “Yes! So it’s not just me then?”
She giggled, “No, Lilian’s just like that. You probably just intimidated her because you killed a Level E on your first day.”
I think my eyes were bulging at this point, “Me? Intimidate her?”
“It’s likely. She’s one of the best in our school. It seems like you could take her spot.”
“Oh, I doubt that.” She playfully hit me in the arm, “Don’t be so modest!” I couldn’t help but laugh. Alexandra's nice.
