I was running down the hall clumsily, trying to put on my suit while holding a gun isn’t an easy task. The suits are made out of special rubber-like material, made to protect us from the aftermath of killing a monster. Once you kill it, the remains get on you; it’s unavoidable. If a monster smells the blood of their own, they come after you. It's a scent they can smell from over a mile away, that’s why we wear suits. Complete with a helmet and everything. But William didn’t have a suit on during that incident, so now he reeks of Level E. Of course, humans can’t smell it, but the monsters sure can.
When I forced William's door open, I had just finished zipping up my suit. Hovering above him was the Level H. Adrenaline flowed through my veins as I acted on instinct. I pulled my gun from my side and made a direct shot to the Level H. Its attention went away from William, locking its eyes onto me. Perfect. The monster lunged, knocking me to the ground. During this time, William just sat on his bed staring. “Idiot! Get back!” That seemed to snap him back to his senses and he made his way toward the door. The Level H must have smelled him because it darted in his direction. I couldn’t use my gun at such close range so I had to pull out my knife. Tugging the monster back, I pushed it onto the carpet of the room.
Our knives aren’t normal knives, of course. They’re weapons infused with the same material that make up our bullets. Normal bullets and blades don’t work on these things, which is why we have special weapons. I pressed the knife to Level H’s fleshy hide and heard it screech. After pressing down even harder on Level H, it let out one last screech before dissipating. I was now breathing hard. I had run to William's room and fought this Level H without having time to catch my breath. After standing up and brushing myself off, I saw a group of people suited up in the doorway.
“Move.” The crowd obliged and got out of my way. I made my way to the room next door and saw its inhabitants out in the hallway as well. “Chris, do you mind if the new kid stays in your dorm until his gets cleaned out?”
“Sure. What was it?”
“A Level H.”
“Oh.”
I turned around and found the crowd of people staring at me. Irritating. “Don’t just stand there! Go get the cleaning crew!”
“On it!” Some people left to go get the cleaning committee. When a monster dissipates, the area needs to be cleaned thoroughly. Otherwise, it will only attract more monsters. I went back to the room and saw William just sitting there like a sad lump. Poor kid must be traumatized. I helped him to his feet and brought him to meet Chris and his other temporary roommates. They said they’d handle it from there. I didn’t want to be there any longer than I had to, it’s not like I was allowed to be in the boys' dormitory in the first place. I made sure William received his suit and gun before I left. I couldn’t help but feel relieved.
