Silence enveloped the room after the Glampri's proclamation. "What do you mean by conquering the world, and why do you think I would play along with your little game?" I demanded.
"Are you slow in comprehending information? I said you belong to me now. You have no choice but to obey me; you are my toy," he replied.
I smirked and retorted, "So? What are you going to do to me if I disagree? Kill me? Hate to break it to you, but I'd appreciate that."
He walked closer, his eyes boring into mine. I felt trapped, as if bound with invisible chains. Fear coursed through my veins, making my body tremble as if a violent storm was raging inside me, my limbs shaking uncontrollably.
His voice softened, almost tender. "Oh, my sweet little vessel, you definitely do not know what you are dealing with. I can do whatever I want. Do you think death is the only thing I can do to you? No, no. I can manipulate reality as you know it. How do you think I've prevented your deaths? I created the coincidences that ensured your survival. Time is irrelevant to a being like me; not a single second has passed since I made contact with you. There is so much more I can do to you and your surroundings than just killing you, if I wish."
Then, suddenly, he smiled and said, "Besides, you can't possibly decline because you have no choice."
I knew I had no other option than to play along, but I had a nagging feeling he wasn't entirely honest. If he had such control over reality, why would he need to contact me at all? There was something he was hiding, and I had to figure it out. For now, I would go along with whatever he said.
"Okay, I'll do whatever you please," I said, trying to sound agreeable.
"Now that's a good boy," he said. "So, what now? What should I do? And what exactly do you mean by conquering the world?" I asked curiously.
He answered in a brighter tone, "I'll let you know when I want you to start acting, and you'll understand what I mean by 'conquering the world' soon. Until next time."
I suddenly recalled that I was about to get crushed by a speeding car before I got here. "How the hell am I gonna survive that?" I wondered. But the Glampri knew what was on my mind and said, "You don't need to worry about the car. Witness my power."
Immediately after he said that, I found myself back in the middle of the road, the asphalt stretching endlessly before me, the sun casting long shadows. As I opened my eyes, I saw the car that was about to hit me, just eight feet away. Suddenly, a large truck, rusted and grimy, came crashing into the sports car from the side, completely avoiding contact with me. Not a single scratch was inflicted on me. I stood there, dumbfounded. I could never get used to these happenings. It's always one crazy escape after another. The person driving the car lay on the ground, bleeding severely from the head, indicating the seriousness of the crash. People who witnessed the accident came running to the scene, shouting, "Hey, are you alright?" "How did you not get hurt?" "Damn, I haven't seen this kind of luck in my life." Well, if there's one thing I've realized after this, it's definitely not luck.
After that bizarre experience and the weird conversation I had with the Glampri, I was slowly beginning to adapt to this new way of existence.
I got home a few minutes later. After unlocking my door, I heard a ring on my phone. It wasn't a high-end model, but it wasn't too shabby either; just enough to get by. It was Mark. "Hey Alex, inside that bag I left behind, there are some half-decent clothes in it. Since you're starting a new job, I figured you'd need them," Mark said.
"Really? Thanks, man. And also, thanks for the job. I really appreciate it," I replied.
"No problem. At least you wouldn't try killing yourself again," he said. Little did he know, I couldn't do that even if I tried.
The next morning, I woke up at 6 a.m., a feat I hadn't accomplished since I lost my job a month ago. It wasn't easy, but the fact that my house was a good hour's commute from the city where the office was made it necessary. I picked up my bag, a simple yet decent backpack, and threw a pack of cigarettes inside. "I should definitely stop smoking," I muttered to myself.
As I headed to work, I couldn't stop thinking about the strange encounter I had with the Glampri. "I wonder what he meant by conquering the world? Is it like the villains in the movies?" I mused to myself.
After spending what felt like ages on the road, I finally arrived at the building. Immediately, I felt like turning back home, feeling outclassed by the sleek, professional workers around me. Last time, Mark was with me, but now I felt exposed and inadequate, like a fish out of water.
Suddenly, a strikingly beautiful woman in a sharp suit approached me. Her confidence was palpable, and her smile was both welcoming and intimidating. "Hello, are you Alex, the new receptionist?" she asked, her eyes locking onto mine with a piercing gaze.
Um, yes. Who are you?" I replied, trying to keep my composure.
"I'm Clara, the office manager. Welcome to the team. Let me show you around and get you settled," she said.
I nodded, following her through the sleek, modern corridors of the company. As we walked, Clara explained the basics of my new role, the expectations, and the company culture. Her professionalism and warm demeanor made me feel slightly less out of place.
We arrived at my workstation, a tidy desk with a computer and a phone. "This is where you'll be working. Feel free to ask me if you need anything," Clara said.
"Thank you, Clara. I appreciate it," I said, trying to sound as professional as possible.
As I settled into my new role, I noticed a peculiar buzz of activity among my colleagues. Whispered conversations and glances thrown in my direction heightened my sense of unease. Just as I began to wonder if my new position was a mistake, a man in an impeccably tailored suit approached my desk. He had an air of authority and an enigmatic smile.
