Starlit Destiny

Chapter 3: Collision of Worlds

Chapter 3: Collision of Worlds

Jun 24, 2024

Luna Park hurried down the nearly empty street, her breath visible in the crisp night air. The city lights painted her hurried steps with flickering hues of neon as she pulled her coat tighter against the cold. Tonight’s award ceremony had left her feeling more isolated than ever, and she longed for the solace of her apartment.

Lost in her thoughts, Luna barely noticed the sleek, black car that had been trailing her for several blocks. She had always been wary of overzealous fans and the occasional paparazzi, but tonight she felt unusually vulnerable. Perhaps it was the exhaustion from the relentless scrutiny, or the weight of the scandal still fresh in her mind. Whatever it was, a sense of unease settled over her, prickling at the edges of her awareness.

Astrid Kim, on his usual nightly walk, observed the scene unfolding from a distance. He had learned to sense disturbances in his environment—a skill honed over centuries of navigating an unfamiliar world. His gaze narrowed as he noticed the car creeping along the curb, and he quickened his pace, feeling a peculiar tug of intuition.

As Luna turned a corner into a dimly lit alley, seeking a shortcut to her building, the car suddenly accelerated. She heard the screech of tires behind her and whipped around, heart pounding. Panic surged through her veins as she saw two men leap out of the vehicle and charge toward her.

Luna’s breath caught in her throat as she backed away, her mind racing. She had faced aggressive paparazzi before, but these men seemed more dangerous, their intentions clear in their menacing approach. The alley’s exit seemed miles away as fear rooted her to the spot.

From the shadows, Astrid moved swiftly. He crossed the street with a speed that defied human capability, reaching Luna just as one of the men lunged at her. With a fluid motion, he stepped between them, his hand snapping out to grasp the attacker’s wrist. The man’s eyes widened in shock as Astrid’s grip tightened, his strength far beyond that of any ordinary person.

“Get away from her,” Astrid commanded, his voice low and resonant.

The second man hesitated, but his greed or orders propelled him forward. Without taking his eyes off the first assailant, Astrid extended his other hand. A subtle wave of energy rippled through the air, sending the second attacker sprawling to the ground as if struck by an invisible force.

Luna watched in stunned silence, her mind struggling to process what she had just witnessed. Who was this man who had appeared out of nowhere, and how had he subdued her attackers so effortlessly? Her thoughts were a whirl of confusion and fear, mixed with an unexpected surge of gratitude.

The attackers scrambled to their feet, eyes wide with fear and disbelief. They exchanged a quick, silent glance before retreating to their car, which sped off into the night with a screech of tires. Astrid watched them go, ensuring they were truly gone before turning his attention to Luna.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice softer now, tinged with concern.

Luna nodded numbly, still trying to catch her breath. “Yes, I think so,” she managed to say, her voice shaky. “Thank you… I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t come.”

Astrid’s gaze flicked to the ground, a hint of discomfort crossing his features. “It’s nothing. I was just passing by,” he replied, attempting to downplay his actions.

But Luna wasn’t easily dismissed. Her sharp eyes had caught the unexplainable swiftness of his movements, the strange force that had repelled her attackers. “Who are you?” she asked, curiosity and a touch of suspicion creeping into her tone.

“Astrid Kim,” he said simply. He hesitated, debating how much to reveal. “I’m a professor at the university nearby.”

Luna studied him for a moment, noting his composed demeanor and the enigmatic air that surrounded him. Despite the circumstances, there was something calming about his presence, something that made her feel unexpectedly safe.

“I’m Luna Park,” she said, extending her hand. “Thank you, Professor Kim. I don’t know how to repay you.”

Astrid shook her hand briefly, his touch cool and steady. “There’s no need for that. Just… be careful,” he advised, a faint hint of warmth in his otherwise guarded eyes.

Before Luna could say more, Astrid turned to leave, his long coat billowing slightly in the night breeze. She watched him walk away, a multitude of questions swirling in her mind. Who was this man who had appeared out of the darkness, saving her in such an extraordinary way? And what was it about him that felt both familiar and profoundly alien?

As Astrid disappeared into the night, Luna felt a strange pull to follow him, to uncover the secrets that lay behind his calm facade. But she hesitated, her steps faltering. For now, she needed to get home, to process what had just happened and find some semblance of normalcy.

Astrid, on the other hand, walked away with a heavy heart. He had broken his rule of keeping a low profile, drawn inexplicably to intervene. The encounter had stirred something within him, a sense of connection he hadn’t felt in centuries. He knew he had to maintain his distance, yet something about Luna’s eyes had pierced through his carefully constructed walls.

Their paths had crossed in a moment of fate, and although they parted that night, both felt the tremors of a collision that would ripple through their lives in ways they couldn’t yet comprehend. As the city continued its restless hum, two souls, one human and one alien, were set on a course that would defy the stars themselves.
