A massive mountain reveals itself before me, and behind that mountain, there is another, and another, and another: They seem to recede into infinity.
On them, long cables carry lifts up and down the imposing landmasses. Small cities dot their sloped faces, and large ones reside on the flat ground below. My jaw drops involuntarily.
"Quite the view, huh?" Ygrene remarks.
I notice the sprawling city around me. It is nothing like the Village or Ecarret city: the buildings are single-storied and leave wide berths between each other. Beings living in the area stroll to and fro, chatting softly. The entire place exudes intense clarity.
"What's this place called again?" Nur asks in awe.
"Eneres city," Ygrene responds proudly.
All three of us take in the serene sight.
"Alright," Ygrene suddenly announces, "This is where I leave you. Good luck on your journey."
He ambles away from us absentmindedly.
We stand in unexpected confusion.
"What now?" I ask.
"I—I didn't expect him to do that. I guess it fits his personality, though," Nur expresses, "I guess we should—"
"Look!" I exclaim.
I hold up the key I just discovered lying beneath my feet. Inscribed in it is a message:
NUR AND ESIR—KEEP THIS, BUT DO NOT REVEAL IT TO ANYONE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
We stare at the object puzzledly.
"How—" Nur stutters.
"It seems our life is part of a much bigger puzzle than we thought," I note.
"Maybe Ygrene dropped it here for us?" Nur guesses.
"Whatever it is, someone knows much more about us than we do ourselves," I say, stunned.
"We need to find Ygrene," Nur states.
"Why?"
"We have no money! Where are we going to sleep? What are we going to eat? How are we going to survive?"
"How do we hide this key?" I whisper.
"We'll figure that out later. We need to find Ygrene."
Nur heads deeper into the city determinedly. I follow him, the strange key tightly held in my hands.
Who ARE we?
The question returns to my thoughts.
Who knows who we are?
A new question.
How can I find that person?
Another new question.
A dangerous idea enters my mind. I analyze it hesitantly, afraid of its consequences.
What if it backfires?
What if I had misjudged?
But still, there's only one way to find out.
"Everybody! My name is Esir, I have no memories, and I have just discovered a key with my name on it! Does anyone know who I am? Do any of you recall my face?" I scream at the top of my lungs, jolting Nur out of his focused search for Ygrene.
The faces of the many residents of Eneres City turn to me in shock. Some study my countenance, searching for resemblances, while others shuffle away fearfully, passing me off as insane.
"Come! See for yourself," I yell, "This key has my name on it!"
Nur stares at me in horror.
"That's not all," I continue loudly, "The key specifically instructs me to tell no one of its existence! What do you think of that, folks?"
"What the heck are you doing?" Nur whispers vehemently, "I thought you wanted to explore this place peacefully, without the attention of the entire Chasm."
"I've changed my mind," I reply, an odd laugh escaping my lips.
Newfound exhilaration rushes through my body.
"We can't expect to solve the mystery of our past by just bumbling around aimlessly," I assert, "If we do that, we'll get nowhere! We have to take matters into our own hands, and by doing it this way, we aren't under the control of Wolliw!"
Nur's expression hardens into unnerving anger.
"What if I don't want to figure out my past, Esir?" He blares, "What if I want to figure out my present? Do you realize the kind of aftermath this announcement of yours could lead to? Someone knows far too much about our lives compared to ourselves. We are blind to the implications of our actions. We are playing with fire!"
"Well, there's truth in that fire, and I'm not shying away from it. I don't want you to, either. You deserve the truth."
"That's it! If your way of 'finding the truth' involves rash and ignorant decisions that lead to your very destruction, then have at it, but there's no way I'm going down that path with you! Good luck, my counterpart!"
Nur bolts off into the distance.
Multiple city-dwellers approach me.
"Ee sem ta rem'mber ya," One says.
"Whut ya nam agan?" Another inquires.
"Where ya frum, stranja?" A third asks.
"E—Eris. I don't know where I'm from because I have no memories. I—" I trail off, gutted by Nur's sudden departure.
"Huw can way trust ya?" The first interrogates.
"Well! You can—You can, because—" My voice seems to glitch as I attempt simple communication.
I break away from the crowd, discombobulated and lost.
"I need to find Wolliw," I mumble.
"I need to find Wolliw.
"I need to find Wolliw..."
The next few minutes whir by speedily: I ask a stranger for help with the nearest stop-and-go station, head back to Dradnats city, and stumble into Wolliw's dwelling.
He's sitting at a desk, pouring over a research paper.
He looks up.
"Your back?" He blurts, bewildered.
"I don't know why I left."
"Instincts, maybe. Where's Nur?"
"We—we fought."
"Oh, okay."
"I want to figure out my past. I want to run those tests."
"Are you sure, because only a little while ago, you—"
"I know I do. It's all I think about. Oh, and I found this."
Relaxing my grip, I display the key to Wolliw.
"It's got my name on it," I explain.
"Your name? Why would— oh my gosh! There's a message on this! Who gave this to you?"
"I don't know. A recent acquaintance of mine may have dropped it on the ground, but I'm only guessing."
"I have to conduct some tests on this. I should be able to trace it back to the owner."
"And you'll study me too? Like you wanted to?" I ask hopefully.
"Sure. If you don't mind me asking, what changed your mind?"
"I never really made up my mind," I clarify, "I just followed Nur. The more I followed him, though, the more I felt I was pointlessly avoiding my destiny."
"Oh. Well, I hope you guys reconvene at some point. Until then, we've got some research to do!"
