As I look around, I can hear birds chirping, the sun is shining. I feel something fluffy on my lap. A blanket. I am in a room, probably that one new room in my grandparent’s house where I will permanently live.
- ‘Morning, Nora! Are you ready for a new day to start?! Exclaims my father excitedly as he brings in my room a plate filled with pancakes, with a splash of maple syrup.
The smell is filling in my senses, a delicious perfume that I know I can’t resist. The thought of my father cooking for me his delightful recipes make me smile; How could I ever decline that offer?
- Yeah, I think I’m ready, somehow... Somehow, I want a fork to eat those delights!
He chuckles, as I grab the utensils he gives me.
- Thank you, dad.
My father smiles warmly and responds to me that never in the world will he ever forget my favorite breakfast. He leaves the room, for me to enjoy those pancakes. Effectively, I grab my fork and start eating. Those are delicious, I can sense the delicate and sweet taste of maple syrup, accompanied by the crunchy taste of those personalized pancakes. I quickly end my meal, savouring my last bites.
- Dad, what’s planned for today? I ask my father
- We’re not planning anything, Nora...he responds Why are you asking me that? Do you want to go anywhere?
- Well, I was wondering if it would be a great idea to invite Avery here today.... Would you mind?
He smiles and asks my grandparents, as they agree to my offer.
- Yeah, I guess we can leave you with your friend for a while... Did you talk to her about it or are you going to ask it now? We’ll have to know when she plans on coming over...
I nod at his idea, excited to see my friend. I quickly hang up my phone and calls her. A sweet voice responds, it is trembling.
- No-Nora...? asks the voice Is that really you?
- Yeah, it’s me.... Is Avery here? I want to ask her something.
- Hmh. She’s there. It’s me, Nora. It’s me.... says the voice, trembling more and more
- Avery! How are you doing? Why is your voice trembling?
I can hear Avery sigh; she seems incredibly stressed about the whole situation.
- Look, Nora, it’s....I.... I missed you.
I stared at the floor, in shock. I didn’t expect her to miss me when she left me a week ago.
- Are you sure it’s only that, Ave? It seems way more than that.
- Yes, I swear. She answers honestly as she sighs again. So, what did you want to ask me in the first place?
I can easily notice that something is bothering my best friend, but I won’t keep on asking her. She needs peace from me. Maybe she’s not lying and she’s simply missing me? Let’s keep hoping.
- Oh. Right. Um, well, you know I now live with my grandparents, huh?
I can’t hear anything on the phone for a minute, but then she gasps and responds to me.
- No, I didn’t know.... What about it? She asks with a trembling voice
- Well, I wanted to know if you’d like to come over. Maybe you have something, but I’d like seeing you th-
- YEAH, DOUBLE YEAH, TRIPLE YEAH! Of course! What hour? She seems excited now
I chuckled at her response, glad to know she feels better now.
- Anytime. You have my grandparents address, so I guess you can come over anytime...
At least, I’ll have something to do!
