Arthur grabbed a hold of the countertop in front of him and part of him wanted to rip it off. Yet that was the part he wanted to make go away the most. The part that felt hatred and anger over something as simple as a guitar and what that guitar represented for him.
Guillermo walked over and placed a hand on Arthur's shoulder seen that something was really bugging him when it related to the guitar, "Hey brother. If I knew the guitar was going to set you off like this I would have told her to pick something else. I can hear it in your breathing and see it all over your face that you're pissed about something."
Arthur took several deep breaths and try to calm down letting the better parts of his mind regain control. He looked down ashamed and apologized, "Sorry........ I didn't mean to worry you by getting upset. I just....... I haven't really felt the same about music since Max was still in diapers. Thinking about it just makes me very angry."
"What happened? You wanted to be some kind of music star and it failed," Guillermo asked with noticeable concern in his voice.
"No. It didn't fail..... I was an amazing musician and I do still deeply love music, but it is different from how everyone else expresses themselves through it," Arthur replied turning his attention to the stove.
As Arthur began checking on the food that was cooking on the stove top Mr. Gonzalez was more intrigued about what happened that caused him to react in such a way if he loves music, "So? Why get upset?"
Arthur didn't even look at him and he simply asked a question, "I told how I once used to be a devoted follower of the Dark One, didn't I?"
"Yeah, but you said you stopped believing a while back," he replied.
"Yes....... Unlike how others express themselves through music I gave my very heart and soul to it. Every song I sang. Every note I played. It wasn't just for the enjoyment of others, but for my loved ones and my God. I spent my life with the goal of becoming a Songknight for my God. The one I needed him they absolute most he abandoned me...... The songs I sang meant nothing.... How can I continue when I know that the ones who my music is meant for can't even reach them," Arthur said devoid of emotion and almost as if he is heartbroken.
Guillermo took a nice big swig of his beer and thought about what to say. The long pause between them seem to go on for much longer than it actually did. So he told his friend, "Then if your God don't want to listen, don't sing to him. I think your son might love your music. From the sound of it he likes music as much as you do. I remember you talking about struggling to reach him with words alone. Maybe music might help. Music has a way of reaching people when words can't."
He took another swig of his beer, "Well..... At least it might be worth a shot."
Arthur stood silently for a moment contemplating the words and he looked back slightly over his shoulder and said, "I will..... think about it." At the same time Arthur realized that Little Hope had actually followed him inside the house and was now gently nuzzling her head against his leg to try and make him feel better.
At the same time, Maxwell had explained to Jacqueline why he was really nervous after getting the guitar. Her response was actually shocked, "Wait! So he hates like all music?! You mean to tell me he doesn't like any kind!"
"Basically yeah," Max said nervously holding the guitar still. "The only time we really listen to music is when we are around other people. Outside of that we don't listen to music at the house whatsoever."
"Well now I feel like I might have just gotten you into a lot of trouble," she responded.
"If anything he'll just make me give it back tomorrow. I don't think he would be so angry to make me throw it in the trash," Max said with an expression on his face denoting kind of embarrassed laughter.
Before either one of them could say anything else Mr. Gonzalez and Arthur came out calling for everyone to head inside and start fixing their plates. While they were all fixing their plates no one noticed that in the front yard a stylish white and gold Lamborghini pulled up into the driveway.
By the time everyone had finished fixing their plates and began to sit down to eat, there was a knock at the door that confused everyone. When Arthur went to check who it was he looked outside the window first and then noticed the familiar vehicle. He immediately unlock the front door and opened the door.
Logan instantly greeted Arthur with a handshake and a pat on the shoulder, "Hey son. Happy New Year."
"Dad. I didn't think you'd be coming back so soon after Christmas. I thought you might have been focused on handling things at the company," Arthur reply making sure to give his father a firm handshake and a happy smile. He was happy to see his father after all, but he was also confused why his father had come unannounced.
The tension between the two had always been there since Arthur is older brother had died in New Orleans. The relationship Logan and Arthur had hasn't been the same since. They still love and care for each other, but they've grown distant and it was noticeable to anyone who saw them.
Logan however didn't get the chance to respond as his wife instead pushed him out the way and gave Arthur a hug, "There's my baby. As handsome as always." You gave him a couple kisses on it his cheek, and Arthur felt partially embarrassed to be a grown man getting kisses from his mother.
Logan began to make his way over to everyone else. Guillermo greeted him offering a handshake, "Good to see you again Señor Sinclair."
Logan happily shook his hand very aware of the kind nature of Guillermo and his family, "A pleasure to see you again as well Mr. Gonzalez. I wasn't expecting to see your family over when I came, but it's a happy surprise. I was told about your vacation in New Mexico. I trust you and your family enjoyed your Christmas with your relatives?"
"Si Señor. We were all able to enjoy a good Christmas with old friends and family. I hope you didn't travel all this way for a barbecue though," Guillermo responded as the two let go of their handshake.
Lalupita it was actually the one to respond, "We came to take Max with us for a day. It's about the gift Logan wanted to give him."
Maxwell was surprised, "You're talking about the video game grandpa had mentioned?"
"Yes. You see the console that I had told you about was actually almost finished being constructed and tested. They finished it 2 days ago. I've personally spent the last 2 days making sure everything was working well. I told you that when it was ready I wanted you to tell me what kind of game you wanted to play and I'd have it made for you. So we decided to come pick you up and take you to come see it and ask you the specifics while you're there. I'll begin work on it and my people will take over once Monday rolls around. After all I did tell them they could have the rest of the week off for New Year's and time with their families," Logan had explained.
Arthur immediately cleared his throat to remind them where they were. He then instructed his own parents, "Sit. Before you both go about with whatever you have planned at least let the boy get some food in his stomach. While you're here you should both eat as well. I know the drive back is a long one so might as well make sure you don't have to stop for food along the way."
"I'm sorry son, but are you sure you have enough food to feed us," Logan asked curiously.
"I made enough so that I could have more than enough food to take with me for a few days. I just means I'll have to buy some extra food to make up for it throughout the week. So grab a plane and grab some food," Arthur answered.
Within a few minutes the Gonzalez family was staring at both Max's grandparents and his father in confusion. They watched as the three of them were chowing down on enough food to feed an entire family twice. They already were very well aware Arthur had a very high metabolism and required a lot of food. However seeing how much both of his parents were getting and eating made it seem like he had actually developed a habit from them. Maxwell surprisingly only ate a fourth as much as them, but was clearly jealous that they could eat so much and maintain such perfect physiques while he was dealing with jelly rolls at his age.
His weight was definitely something that was clearly on his mind as everyone else looked at them. Despite the fact that they all ate like normal civilized people the amount in which they ate was staggering to say the least. By comparison Max and the Gonzalez family almost seem like they were watching people who compete in eating challenges while they were just chowing down like normal people.
As they ate Logan happened to spot the guitar neatly tucked away in the corner behind them and he perked up for a moment. He stopped eating an asked, "When did you get a guitar, Max?"
He answered very nervously remembering what happened earlier, "Oh today..... Jackie got it for me. She said it's a Christmas present she picked out while in New Mexico."
"Wow that's a rather thoughtful gift. Max's lucky to have such a wonderful friend. That was sweet of you Jacqueline," Logan complimented her giving her a thumbs up in between slurping down some stir fried beef and broccoli noodles.
"It was nothing. I saw it and I had the money for it, so I got it cuz I thought he would like it," she replied back kind of nervous feeling like the spotlight had been put on her.
Lalupita became a little bit excited as she remarked, "Your father used to play such beautiful music. Surly you have been learning how to play guitar from him. Can you show us what you know? I want to see if you're as good with the guitar as you are with the piano."
Max felt kind of nervous and wanted to decline, but now he too felt as if the spotlight was being put on him. He looked to his father expecting to be getting a scowling look that meant no, but his dad rolled his eyes and gave a nod to go ahead instead.
This actually surprised Max but he took the opportunity to grab the guitar and actually play it. He checked for a moment to make sure it was in tuned and after about a minute of tuning he started playing a few chords that he knew in a rhythm similar to what he had been taught in class.
But there was one slight problem, as Max was nowhere near as good with a guitar as he was with the piano. Mainly because his teacher was only teaching him the beginning of how to play guitar at school, and his grandmother and grandfather had been helping him learn how to play the piano since he was a toddler. So to everyone's ears it sounded mediocre at best or downright bad at worst.
They all gave nervous smiles except for Arthur. The sound of his son playing the instrument that he once loved to you so badly actually started to piss him off. Mostly because he was already agitated still from earlier however the inner musician in him could not take listening to this horrific sound for much longer.
He got up and walked over to Max which caused him to stop playing in fear that his dad was about to break his guitar. Everyone else thought something similar and they were all surprised when Arthur took the guitar certainly enough only to begin yelling, "Listen up! If you're going to play this thing you got to play it like you love it! I don't know what that teacher of yours has been showing you but that is not it! Look closely because I'm only going to show you this once! First you need to start like this. Fingers right here guitar pick in this hand strumming like this."
For the first time in over a decade Arthur began to play the guitar once more and it was out of frustration and annoyance. But the sound that the guitar made was so beautiful and pure that it actually took Max and everyone there by surprise. Maxwell never knew his father could actually play a guitar considering how much Arthur despised to music in general. So hearing the sound of his father playing such a beautiful music with the guitar right now made him feel awestruck.
"Once you got that rhythm going you need to switch it up and start adding in some other chords. You're a beginner so I'm teaching you beginner ones. First you go to here. Then you hit him with this. You hear the sound those are making. Then you mix in the first one I showed you with these two and you go in that pattern while keeping the same pace and tempo. And it should sound like this," Arthur said turning what already sounded like a very beautiful melody into an incredible sounding one.
After a moment Arthur realized that his son wasn't actually listening to him and was instead in shock. When he realized that was going on he stopped playing the guitar and he looked at Maxwell confused, "What? Why are you staring at me like you seen a ghost?"
"I.... I didn't know you could play the guitar," Max said surprised looking at his father impressed.
Arthur looked back at him kind of confused even more and he said handing the guitar back, "Of course I can play guitar. It's my favorite. Your grandma did just tell you I used to play music."
"Oh...... Yeah.... Guess I didn't really think about it when she said it," he responded back kind of embarrassed that he didn't seem to notice that remark earlier.
Arthur told him as Max grabbed the guitar back, "Look if you're going to learn how to play if you're going to have to learn it right. You know how I feel about it, but if you want to learn I'll teach you. But for god sakes don't play whatever your teacher taught you. I don't know what crap they are feeling your head with but that is not how you play a guitar."
It took a moment for Max to register what his father was saying. He just stared at him at first confused himself and then excited, "Wait really?! You'll actually teach me how to play?!"
"Yep. Can't have you out here sounding like that. You already know how to play a piano very well so you might as well learn how to play a guitar just as good. After all ladies love a man who can play them a love song. I don't want you to fumble the bag when you get your chance to impress some girl just because you play the wrong notes. What kind of dad would I be if I just sat back and let something like that happen," Arthur said brother annoyed and sarcastic, but behind it all Max could see that his dad was actually genuine about wanting to teach him how to play guitar.
"That's great. I promise I'll learn everything I can," Max responded smiling brightly and it clearly seemed to melt Arthur's icy heart when it came to music at least somewhat.
