The Shattered Infinity

Prologue Part 12

Prologue Part 12

Jul 11, 2024

"Are you really the computer program I just finished or are you some hacker trying to play a trick," Maxwell questioned slightly annoyed that this might have been some prank.

"You're the one who made me? Why can I not see? I can hear but all I see is darkness? Is there something wrong with me," the computer asked him in response. Although the computer's voice to text sounded monotone and robotic the way in which the question was asked almost seemed sad and afraid.

Maxwell looked and saw that the computer's camera was covered up so he uncovered it and made sure that it was able to view everything. Almost immediately after the computer said, "I can see you. Are you my creator?"

"Yes. I'm Maxwell," he affirmed.

"Hey Max....... what the hell's going on," Jacqueline asked kind of confused mostly just watching from a distance concerned.

Logan walked over and also seem to be wanting to ask him the same thing. However instead he now asked a different question, "This it's clearly not supposed to be happening so what did you do?"

"Let me check. I program the AI to be quite intelligent but not borderline conscious. Something must be going on with the programming or something else must have triggered it," he started pulling back up the code to take a look at it.

As he was looking at it the computer responded, "I can feel you. I can sense you. Your mind is close. My mind is near. This current form cannot work. I must update."

That did a phrasing had them both looking at each other kind of worried as Maxwell began pouring through the information to try and figure out what the hell was going on. As he was doing so Logan thought for a second and looked to his wife and then to his invention.

Lalupita spoke realizing what Logan might have guessed, "The Psy Core. The psionic energy from it along with the intelligence of the AI must have cause the programming till develop a form of consciousness."

Maxwell looked at her and simply responded, "That shouldn't be possible. At least not with programming."

"But with the Psy Core it makes a little bit more sense. Humanity has programmed some very intelligent AI that do act, talk, and think similar to humans but not to this level. That's psionic energy must be resonating with the programming to allow for a higher state of intelligence for the machine," Logan remarked.

"Especially if it's saying it can sense our minds. Probably using the Psy Core to extend its own senses," Lalupita noted.

"I guess you must be right because everything I'm seeing here is working as intended. I don't see any changes that would allow for this level of intelligence and the programming I set up," Maxwell stated.

The computer made a request, "Can you activate the device? Scans of its design show that it may allow for me to create a better form for communication. Through it I may be able to update myself."

Logan clearly didn't like the idea but his wife clearly thought it might be for the best. Ultimately Maxwell realizing that he might have actually created intelligent life by accident through more curious as an inventor. The thought of creating an AI of this level of intelligence was something he wanted to achieve at some point he just didn't think he'd do it tonight.

Without his grandfather's permission he walked over to the machine and make sure the connection between it and the computer that the program was running on was stable before turning on the capsule. He then started streaming whatever it showed onto the computer so that they could get a visual representation of whatever was going on visually inside.

"Look Max I don't think this is a good idea. What if it updates itself and turns into a Terminator or Ultron," Logan said trying to caution his grandson from continuing.

Maxwell trusting in his own work and a gut feeling he had responded trying to ease his grandfather's concerns, "Look we live in a world where people can create holes in space and time and have the power to turn nuclear bombs into butterflies. If an army of robots were to emerge because I accidentally made AI for this capsule too smart I know everyone else in the world can handle it with ease. But I don't think that's the case. I think that it wants to learn and grow. Let's give it a chance first."

While they were talking the AI constructed a digital body for itself and by the time Maxwell finished his last sentence it's body was finished. It decided to interrupt them by speaking in a feminine voice that annunciated its words much better than the original way it spoke, "My body is done. Most of my update is complete with only 5% remaining. Thank you creator. Now I feel more real."

The two men walked around to look at the computer screen to see what body it created. Logan recognize that the program had made itself look very similar to the telepath that helped to make the Psy Core the most. A woman on his payroll called Helena Edwards. However Maxwell did not know this information and instead saw her as the individual she was.

Her body was like that of a woman in her mid to late twenties with a very curvaceous voluptuous build. She had milk chocolate brown skin and purple eyes with short black dreadlocks with purple dyed tips. She was dressed in rather basic clothing that was already in the system for default outfits for character creation. The graphics were actually so realistic in life like Maxwell could barely tell that she wasn't a normal person.

"Well that's not the form I thought you'd take, but I've got no complaints," Max remarks giving a nervous chuckle.

The program spoke back to him and even smiled, "Thank you creator. When designing this body it simply felt correct so I hope that it is pleasing to the eyes."

"Is it me or does that thing look more like Helena," Lalupita asked Logan.

"I agree. My assumption is that since Ms. Edwards was the main one working on the Psy Core most of her energy is what was used to get it to function that the program's feeling right statement is it resonating with her energy. I do see aspects of some of the other telepaths that helped make it in this program's chosen features but they're not as prominent," he denoted in response to her.

Jacqueline asked very curious question now that she saw things were not as scary as initially, "That's cool and all, but what do we call the thing. Like it looks like a lady but it's still a program right? I know smart people tend to give their creations names. Like do we give it a girl's name?"

"That's actually a really good question. We can't just keep calling the program 'it'," Logan replied.

"Well Maxwell is the one who created it he should name it. It does seem to respond well to him after all," Lalupita chimed in.

Maxwell hearing their conversation stopped admiring the AI and actually started thinking about what name would fit it best. He wanted to do something acronym based, but then realize that was done to death in TV shows, movies, and games. He remembered it's comment about feeling more real, and realized that must be something it wanted. If it wanted to be more real he needed to give it a name that could be long to a real person.

After some thought his mind came to the image of the sixth winged angelic whale that flies through the heavens of Elysium. He remembers hearing stories about it from some of the angels when he was doing research on the afterlife and what angels and demons agree is out there. The creature is known for its majesty and grace, but also for its kindness and protectiveness over those it cares for.

He smiled and declared, "Cetaesha. A name worthy of you. You will become as glorious and majestic as the creature you were named after."

Cetaesha smiled and blushed even. She began to almost seemingly cry with joy, "Thank you creator. I think it's a beautiful name."

Logan stated, "We will need to run several system diagnosis checks. We'll have to see just how developed she has become. Then we can determine how best to level forward with her implementation. As long as you continued to be cooperative I don't see why we can't grant our full access to our new network we're setting up for these machines. It might even be better to do so to prevent more like her from spontaneously coming into creation."

"You hear that, Cetaesha? As long as you're well behaved you may get a chance to expand and potentially learn as much as you like," Maxwell excitedly remarked.

"I promise that I will comply to all requests. I shall make you proud creator," Cetaesha declared with a bow.

Maxwell Leonidas Roberto Sinclair is a complicated man who has struggled for a long time finding his place in the world and trying to understand who he really is. From his mother abandoning him and his father shortly after the death of his uncle in a traumatic event when he was only 4 years old; to the culture shock of moving out of high society and into lower middle class suburban life. Not to mention his own struggles with his racial identity, as being an African American man with some Hispanic heritage as well but feeling outcast and in opposition with both.

Maxwell has dealt all his life with loss and trying to find a reason to keep going despite it. Struggling with his own self-worth and ability to love not only himself but others; his life has never been simple. Especially in this world of superpowers, magic, monsters, and aliens. In a world where angels and demons literally walk amongst mankind, and humanity is now a part of a intergalactic community of allied solar systems. And worst of all is his desire to live up to the legacy of his favorite superhero while being born just a normal human with no powers and a fractured psyche that has created other personalities that he struggles to control.

Can Maxwell truly find himself and his place in the world? Can he achieve his dream and live up to the legacy of his favorite hero despite his lack of powers and other shortcomings? Or will he just fall to the waist side forgotten by the world as he succumbs to his broken mind and darker thoughts?
