Yuu answered without hesitation, “I will observe and learn, of course. Your minds must hold a wealth of knowledge, and knowledge is the key to survival. I'm not interested in giving out your names, especially after you've been so kind to us.”
Victor, still processing the information, glanced between Yuu and the Moriarty brothers before speaking. Then, composing himself, he said in an assured tone, “I agree with her wholeheartedly.”
The Moriarty brothers didn’t expect such a reaction and chuckled. “I don’t think we’ve ever met such spirited and interesting individuals as the two of you,” William remarked. Then he continued, “Well then, we have a basic understanding of one another now. Let’s get back to the beginning. Tell us, how did you end up here? Do you have something in mind that could be the trigger?”
“Well, we put the last piece of an artifact together, and then there was a blinding light, and somehow we ended up here,” Victor started explaining.
“May I see the artifact?” Albert inquired.
“Certainly,” Victor said as he took the artifact out of his pocket. It was no longer in one piece. Holding the pieces in his palm, he said, “Strange, when I put it in my pocket, it was still intact. Now, I'll need to assemble the whole thing from scratch.” He looked at it, surprised, and added, “Well, this will take some time.”
“What do you know about the artifact?” Louis asked keenly, looking at Victor.
“Well, apart from the fact that this is the artifact my father left for me as a memento, and that it was found during an expedition when he and Yuu went to some abandoned ruins near London, I don't know much.”
Yuu sighed as she remembered the events that led them to finding the artifact. She slightly shifted her position and her eyes darted between the Moriarty brothers and Victor until she finally chimed in, “My father and I accidentally found a book in the British Library that pointed to unexplored ruins housing an artifact resembling a puzzle. It was my idea to go there and see if the artifact was still present, even though there was no prior information about it in the book. As explorers unveiling the mysteries left behind by past eras, we embarked on the search, driven by curiosity and the desire to fill our knowledge gap. We believed that by having it in our hands, we could unravel its mysteries and advance our research. However, fate had other plans on that fateful day.” Yuu averted her gaze as she whispered the last sentence, her eyes now clouded.
Feeling Yuu's inner turmoil, Victor took her hand and squeezed it. The twins' gesture didn't go unnoticed, and William's keen eyes observed their interaction, understanding that something significant had happened in their lives that day, but he decided not to pry.
Victor, still holding his sister's hand, continued with his explanations. “As my father left me the artifact, I tried assembling it. While putting all the puzzle pieces together, I conducted some research and discovered a book that featured different artifacts, including this one, with detailed explanations. This book was housed in the London Institution Library near Finsbury Circus, but the library was demolished in 1936, and the book was lost,” he paused suddenly, realizing something. Excitement filled his voice as he continued, “Wait, that means the library building should still be intact since it was built in 1806. We could try searching there for some clues.”
Albert nodded in agreement. “Well, it's a start. Tomorrow, we'll decide on our course of action and who will accompany you on your quest. It's getting late, but first things first: Yuu needs new clothes. We'll arrange that first thing in the morning. You can stay here as our guests for the time being. We're also curious to learn more about the future from you. But for now, you must be tired. We'll show you to your rooms. William, please show Yuu to her room. Victor, come with me.”
The twins bid each other goodnight and departed. Victor followed Albert, Yuu walked with William, and Louis headed to his own room.
As Yuu and William approached the guest room, he opened the door and they entered. “This will be your room,” William remarked. “Mine is next door. If you need anything, just knock.”
Yuu nodded. “Thank you again, William, for everything. I mean it; if not for you and your brothers, we would probably be lost,” she said sincerely, her gaze locked with William's.
“No need to thank. We are happy to help. I hope you'll find everything you need here. Any other necessities for daily life will be arranged tomorrow. Now, rest,” he bid goodnight with a warm smile gracing his lips, then closed the door.
Now alone in her new room, Yuu looked around, trying to familiarize herself with the space. Her eyes scanned every corner - the floor covered with a large, intricately patterned carpet, and the walls painted in a rich burgundy hue adorned with various paintings depicting nature scenes.
Her eyes shifted to the center of the room, where a grand four-poster bed stood. Silk curtains cascaded from both sides, adorned with delicate flowery embroidery. Yuu approached and ran her fingertips along the edges of the bed, made of heavy, dark wood, as she familiarized herself with the room. The bed looked inviting, adorned with plush pillows and embroidered linens.
Beside the bed, there stood a table with a mirror, crafted from the same dark wood as the bed. On the table, a candlestick and a vase of red roses were elegantly placed. Next to the table, a chair made of matching dark wood stood firm, its seat adorned with a small cushion of light material.
Near the table, a wide window adorned with heavy, floor-length velvet curtains made of brocade overlooked the outside. In the middle of the room stood a fireplace crafted from white marble. Next to the fireplace, a wardrobe made of dark wood matched the rest of the furniture.
Her eyes spotted another door leading to her own private bathroom, which she found very convenient. As she settled into the grand bed, her body sank into the plush pillows and fabrics. She glanced up at the ceiling, where a grand chandelier hung, reminding of her room in the family manor she had left long ago. Memories of the days spent there with her brother flooded back, evoking a sense of nostalgia. However, she refused to let herself be consumed by these feelings.
Yuu's thoughts then shifted to the day's events. She contemplated them, unable to shake off their lingering impact. “Who could have thought that we would travel back in time and meet the infamous Lord of Crime?” she pondered.
