Theodore in a lot more respectable of a tone gave a nod saying, "Yes. Good to see you again Max. Although I can tell you have been going through a rough patch lately."
Logan gave an annoyed smirk seeing the two boys. He remembered both of them always coming over to the mansion to spend time with Maxwell and was very familiar with their personalities. He knew that Franklin was the one who said what he tried to try and leave for a later date to answer. He gave him a scowl, "Franklin....... Why would you tell her about that? If I made it clear I wasn't going to say it what makes you think I wanted someone else too. It's not a good thing too talk about the more unsavory aspects of a person's religion when someone is just starting to get curious about it."
"No harm doc. After all every religion's got a bad side. The Muslims want to genocide basically anyone who's not a middle eastern Muslim. Catholics love to molest little boys and help the cartels in black market transport goods. The Jews still ignore the fact that even they crucified their Messiah even now that both angels and demons have directly told them they did as much. You name a religion I'll point out the fucked up shit they do or did," Franklin responded very nonchalant.
"Language Franklin. What have I told you about cursing around me," Logan said getting extremely annoyed now.
"Alright doc. I'll stop all the swearing," Franklin comply to ease the older man's frustration.
Maxwell goes up and shakes their hands giving a happy smile to his best friends, "It is great that I got to see you guys on this trip. I missed you both the last two times I came down."
Theodore gladly shook his hand and reply with a sincere smile, "Yeah we were busy dealing with stuff. Our powers finally came and kicked in so we had to self quarantine with our families until we could get the hang of everything."
Franklin cracked his knuckles and looked at Maxwell with a wicked grin, "Speaking of which..... When we found out you were in town we decided to catch up, but also to see how well you've been improving. Let me just say I'm a little pissed off looking at you. Who told you, you could start putting on pounds?"
Maxwell very strongly remembered how his best friends also love to fight. He remembered how up until he moved away they would spar with each other for fun. It was a tradition they kept every time he came back to town and they met up. Although his last two visits in the previous two years he'd never saw them so he didn't get the chance. Plus now he had gotten a lot chubbier and hasn't really been motivated to go back to training his body like he used to.
Nevertheless he saw that look in Franklin's eyes and realized that his friend wasn't going to take a no for an answer, "Well....... Hahaha...... I guess it couldn't hurt to see what we both can do now. Let's just put a little space between us and other people. I don't know what you guys can do and I don't want anyone to get caught in between it."
Theodore give a sincere look like a true gentleman and nodded, "We can't do anything too crazy or flashy yet, but it wouldn't hurt to have a little bit more breathing room."
Jacqueline saw that they were about to walk over to an open space to fight and she grabbed Max by the arm. She was worried that he was about to get bullied by some random dudes she had never met before.
Seeing that worry in her eyes Max told her, "Don't worry this is the thing me and my friends do whenever we see each other after being apart for too long. No one's going to really get hurt. We're just going to test how each other has been holding up."
"That sounds a little crazy," she replied.
"It does to those who are not familiar with the kind of sparring they do. One can communicate quite a lot in a sparring match between friends without ever uttering a word. Although some people have trouble understanding that kind of communication if they're not truly connected to their opponent," Logan clarified while placing his hand on her shoulder to let her know that it is okay.
She reluctantly let go of Max, "Fine."
As Maxwell approached his friends they commented on Jackie who looked like a very kind young boy in their eyes. Franklin stated, "Your friend over there seems like he cares about you a lot. Glad to see that you have someone watching your back when we're not around."
Theodore added, "His heart is in the right place and he clearly doesn't want to see you get hurt."
Maxwell's actually clarified for them, "Jackie is a girl. She just likes to shapeshift to look like that."
Both Franklin and Theodore were confused and gave each other shared looks like indicated that both were not really certain how to respond. Without needing to speak to each other They both realize that if they said anything other than an okay it would probably result in them getting yelled at for being too insensitive. They just nodded their heads and took up fighting stances.
Maxwell took up a fighting stance himself of a traditional boxer stance and a bit of feet placement usually used by people who practice Japanese sword fighting.
Lalupita stepped up to act as a referee for this sparring match and she gave clear instructions, "No cheap shots or dirty fighting. Powers are allowed however only use what you know you can control that won't severely injure or permanently maim a normal person. Scratches and light bruising is fine and keep it at that. And of course no weapons. With that stated..... Begin!"
After she announced the start of their sparring match she stepped out of the way to allow for the 3 boys too have enough room too give it their best. It proved to be a great choice as almost instantly The three charged head on towards each other. Max was at a disadvantage because it was a two versus one but the looking his eyes conveyed that he knew what he was doing.
Despite his size Maxwell moved like a seasoned fighter. Even though he was rusty due to putting on a couple pounds he still moved with enough force in agility that both Theodore and Franklin had to be wary of him. Well Franklin met his charge head on he ended up having two roll off to the side upon noticing that a continued attempted show of strength against Maxwell would end in certain failure.
He rolled off to the side and Theodore stood opposite of him. Sharing a glance and acknowledging that despite Maxwell's clear show of letting himself go a little bit he still had his old skills and instincts. They took note of the fact that with his current body type he was only half as fast as he used to be but that extra size brought with it more force from his weight.
Franklin charged back in choosing to serve as a temporary distraction as Theodore focused his energies to start folding space and time in on itself to create a portal large enough for him to work with. Although Maxwell was focused on Franklin's charge his eyes did catch note of Theodore's powers. He realized that Franklin's charge was a faint to distract him so Theodore could land a surprise hit with whatever he was planning.
Maxwell shows to take the full brunt of Franklin's charge meeting him halfway. As Franklin punched Maxwell in the chest, Maxwell delivered a punch of his own to Franklin's jaw. However the moment of impact Maxwell observed a reddish faint glow where his fist hit Franklin and saw as the blow had basically no effect.
Maxwell quickly assessed that Franklin's power was probably some kind of damage resistance or negation. As you took a mental note of that Franklin grabbed him by the arm that he was using to punch him with to try and hold him in place. Recognizing this was the moment Franklin was setting up for, Maxwell mainly used his pervertial vision is to quickly try and spot a portal. He saw a small one on his right out of the corner of his eye that was large enough for Theodore to shove his fist through.
He instinctively ducked and Theodore accidentally ended up punching Franklin square in the face. However due to some quick thinking Franklin was able to use the same ability to shrug off the blow. As a result Franklin ended up having to let go of Max's arm.
This proved to be a fatal mistake for Franklin, as the moment Maxwell was free from his grasp he paid his friend back by fainting his shoulder check to the sternum and actually going for a right hook to the stomach. Anticipating the wrong spot to get hit, Franklin was not able to successfully absorb the damage and ended up taking a serious blow to his abdomen. Falling to the ground, Franklin held his belly trying to recover from the blow that was harder than he remembers previously getting hit whenever he would spar with Max.
Seeing the situation, Theodore started using his powers to manipulate the force of gravity to push Max backwards causing him to get flung about 5ft back. Maxwell was surprised when his leg suddenly were no longer on solid ground, but this wasn't the first time he's been sent flying in a fight. Even if this was the first time it happened because of someone's powers his instinctual reactions from previous instances kicked in. He rotated his body while in midair in order to perfectly stick the landing on his feet.
Once he was back on his feet he began charging at them again as Theodore went to try and protect Franklin. He tried blasting Max back with gravity once more. Maxwell allowed it to happen so he can gauge how exactly Theodore was using this power.
After taking the hit for a second time, he saw how his friends eyes gave away when the power was being activated and about to be used due to their distinctive purplish black glow. He was sent flying back again and stuck the landing once more going in for another charge. Theodore again prepare to blast him back and Maxwell allowed it to happen again this time changing direction as he saw his friend activating the power.
To his surprise when he moved out of the way only one of his legs ended up getting hit by the attack causing him to slip and fall as he face planted into the ground for just a few seconds. He instantly recognized that Theodore was focusing that attack in a certain area based off of where his eyes were looking when it was acting. He noticed that it was basically hard for Theodore to change the course of the attack after it had been activated because of how quick acting it is.
He estimated an approximate range that his friend must only be able to blast back anything that is within a cone of influence. The number he surmised based off of what was being affected and how far from Theodore it was being targeted by the attack seemed about a 25-foot cone. However, just like other similar attacks, if you're able to move out of the way of the attack at the right moment it won't affect him.
This time he tried again and Franklin had got up on his feet once more. Still a little winded from the punch but getting ready to go again. As Maxwell charged forward Franklin looked at Theo to try and knock Max off of his feet again. Theodore complied and went to activate his attack for the fourth time, but to him and Franklin surprise Maxwell was able to avoid it.
Dodging out of the way at precisely the right moment Max was able to avoid getting blasted back again and was able to continue his charge. Closing the distance on his friends, Max knew that Theodore could not use the attack again so quickly because it took about at least 5 seconds to activate and fire off. Which was more than enough time for Max to get right up on both of them.
Franklin prepared to protect Theodore and he went to try and go for a right hook against Max whose momentum would be hard for him to stop in time to block the punch. That was when Max surprised Franklin by instead continuing his charge and sliding under the punch just barely. Using the momentum and the slide dodge Maxwell lifted off the ground with a slightly forceful jump and drop kicked Theodore in the stomach.
This caused Theodore to fall back and land on his butt and roll off to the side, feeling the full weight of Max ram into him. Maxwell landing on his back on the ground however was in a precarious situation with Franklin now standing over him. Franklin began to try and stomp on his friend but Max was able to roll and dodge a couple times. Until he got unlucky and Franklin actually landed a stomp on Max's left shoulder. With that Max let out a cry of pain as Franklin seemingly transferred the damage he had been taking successfully into the stomp down onto Max's shoulder causing more force and pain.
The bruise it created was noticeable and immediate, and Maxwell was not able to focus long enough as Franklin went in to try and kick him in the back. Only to miss as Max rolled out of the way not intentionally but as a reaction to the pain. Franklin tried to follow it up with a stomp again only for Max to dodge again as he regained some focus and held his shoulder with another roll.
This time he rolled enough to put some distance between him and Franklin so he could get up to his feet. As Theodore was on his knees now slowly trying to stand back up while holding his stomach, Maxwell held his shoulder looking at Franklin realizing he was going to be hard to defeat. However Max pushed through the pain and began charging at Franklin head on once more.
