We sat on the raft and floated on the river, 15 of us on the raft. The air breezed softly, giving us fresh air, and around us, there was nothing but thick jungle. Nothing was flying, and nothing was in the water; it was all calm. Without context, this would seem like any other jungle, but I knew that there was something lurking underwater.
Crocodiles are the dominant predators in most rivers, so I wondered if there was a species of crocodile here. I was gently sitting on the wood, and Angeles was close to me, almost too close. It was like we were an old married couple. I believe he is scared inside. I almost let out a chuckle at the thought and tried to hide my smirk so that Angeles wouldn't see. I glanced at him, and indeed he was sweating and looking around nervously; he was terrified.
"How good are you at swimming, Angeles?"
"This is no time or place for jokes, Blackwood."
"Wouldn't it be such a shame if your precious waistcoat got wet?"
"Shut your damn mouth-"
"Hey, look, what the hell is that!?" one of the men yelled, and underwater, we saw a long black shape swimming towards us.
"Dear God!" someone yelled as we grabbed our guns and readied our machetes. The mysterious creature swam below the raft and headed towards the second raft. "Hey, hey!" we yelled, and the creature went down... it all went quiet.
It seemed to have vanished. We all had a sigh of relief, but this encounter made us all on edge. And I was right; almost as soon as it was over, we saw another pair of strange creatures on land.
They were on all fours, hairless, with their canine teeth visible. They looked like pure skin and muscle, orange with white stripes, long fingers, and it looked like they had human-like nails. They all had tails longer than their bodies. They resembled both monkeys and cats. I couldn't tell what they were; possibly some new species? They didn't stay for long as loud footsteps were heard, and they scattered.
"Dear God, what is that!?" a young man yelled as on both sides, two creatures the size of a white rhino appeared. Their growl was like 20 lions growling at the same time. They had black sabre teeth like the saber-toothed cat, a body like a komodo dragon, and their reddish-white faces reminded me of the prehistoric pig eneteladont. Their bodies had enormous muscles and black stripes, and their skin was green. They came to the edge of the land and looked like they were going to jump on our raft.
"Paddle back! Paddle back!" our captain yelled. We all started paddling frantically, and our problems just kept getting worse. The paddling noise attracted someone, and up from the river came a fish... with legs I think.
"Jesus Christ, what the hell!?" one of the men immediately hit it and threw it back into the river, but more were coming. These fish started to hop on the raft; they had spider-like legs and a mouth like a piranha. They were completely blackish-blue and had red eyes, with a small tail similar to an amphibian. They were also the size of regular piranhas.
They bit our hands, and while they were a bother, they weren't a major threat, though their bites left marks on our hands.
The creatures on the land began spitting at us; the spit was blue, and when it hit someone, that person began to cough.
"It stings, it stings, agh!" he continued to cough until he collapsed into the river.
"I've had enough of this!" the captain yelled and began firing at the big beasts. We all joined in, but to our horror, the bullets were useless; they bounced off of them, and by their body language, this all seemed like a minor inconvenience to them. How was this possible? This is absurd; no animal can withstand that many bullets without a scratch on its body.
Our fellow raft was going through a leafy pondweed until centipede-like legs emerged, grabbing the raft. We all stared in horror.
I yelled, "Get the hell out of there!" The legs submerged the raft, and one of the hideous land creatures was able to jump on our raft, immediately sinking it. I fell underwater, and all I saw was a murky green color until I was pulled up, coughing out the water.
"Breathe slowly," it was Angeles; he was with me. In front of us, the water looked like it was boiling. The previous murky green color had been replaced with pure red, and soon chunks of meat resurfaced.
