I jumped back and took several steps back, not blinking for a second at the horror in front. The navigator stared, mouth open in pure shock. He looked up at the sky and yelled,
"WHAT IS THIS PLACE? WHAT IS IT?"
He went headfirst to the ground and started to weep. Angeles came over me. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Look at that pathetic excuse of a man. He's supposed to be the navigator? He is weak and fails to adapt to the new environment. You know what we're supposed to do, Blackwood. The ones who are unadaptable will die anyway, we might as well make it merciless."
I shoved him and backed away, unable to look at him as I sweated.
"You psycho!" yelled the navigator, pulling Angeles by his waistcoat. "We're leaving now! We're leaving this nightmare of an island!"
Angeles had fury in his eyes and he pushed the navigator, who fell down a steep hill. I looked over – should I help him or not? The man had lost it, he had become a nuisance, but he's the navigator and I still needed to ask him if he had any food on him. My knees froze and I decided to examine the area to be sure it's safe.
The navigator fell into a crater-like hole filled with plants but something's wrong these plants... are the size of a car! And they are Venus fly traps! One of them opened its jaws and lunged at the navigator, grabbing him and swallowing him whole with ease.
Jesus Christ! How on earth is this possible?
Firstly, these plants shouldn't be able to get this big. Secondly, Venus fly traps can't move this rapidly. Back in our world, they rely on bugs going in their mouths and touching the hairs they have inside.
If a fly touches one hair, then there is a 30-second window before the Venus flytrap closes its jaw. However, if a fly touches a second hair, then the jaws automatically close shut. The plant does this to conserve energy.
So how is this big one able to move like this unless perhaps its hairs are connected to the ground? It's just speculative thought, which was soon disrupted by the navigator's screams.
These plants had stomachs which were clear, and I saw the man inside it. Another different thing from our Venus traps is that ours do not have stomachs; once the jaws are shut, the jaws become the stomach. But here, it seems they have this translucent piece below them. Once it swallowed the navigator, the plant rose up and exposed the translucent part. Now, a juice-like substance is filling it and starting to come out from the bottom.
The man's horrifying screams are heard, "HELP ME HELP ME."
The liquid covers him up to the waist, and he gets his left arm out of it. It's completely skinless.
I couldn't bear to witness this and began to run away.
After some time, I finally stopped and knelt down next to a tree. I frantically looked all around to see if anything was there, which fortunately, there wasn't. I took deep breaths and saw Angeles dusting off his waistcoat as he crouched beside me.
"You killed that man!" I yelled in his face.
Angeles scoffed, "He was a nuisance to us, he was about to die anyway."
"You're insane, Angeles!"
"Oh please, Blackwood, it was us or him. He was a danger. The two of us are clearly the only ones adaptable for the island. We know how to handle it and we will continue forward to find the truth."
I stood up and turned my back. "How the hell are we going to do that when we're alone and have no map?"
Angeles then showed me the map the man must've had a spare one him. I shook my head. "With just the two of us, it's impossible. Whatever we find, we won't be able to bring it back with our lives."
"Oh, Blackwood, don't be silly. You thought of going to find the truth alone, haven't you?"
"W-what? No."
"Please, Blackwood, no need to lie. When the two men were being attacked by the tree-dwelling freaks, you thought of just leaving them behind. But the map and the possibility of them having food made you help them. After all, both of them were useless nuisances to us that just had a slim possibility of being useful, and that's the only reason you bothered to help."
"That's pure wild speculation, Angeles!"
He smirked at me. I was fuming but shaking at the same time. Angeles continued, "Take a few breaths, Blackwood, and let's regroup."
"Yeah," is all I could mutter. The bastard was right; I needed to calm down.
