Wish woke up naturally, and for the first time in a long while, felt rested and ready to start the day. She took the time and effort to actually choose a fresh new set of clothes, straighten out her messily cut hair and put on just a little bit of perfume to make herself feel presentable. Needless to say, she was looking forward to the time after work. Feeling both nervous and excited.
She made her way to the front door, trying to remember the location of Miao’s room and expected the guard to need guidance around the Realms. To her surprise, when she opened the door, the blonde was greeted with her new friend already standing there, waiting for her. Her outfit was different, she wore a white dress shirt with a black vest and purple tie, and had some sort of leg armor over her purple dress pants.
“Oh, how long have you been waiting?” Wish said, feeling slightly embarrassed that she was the one late this time.
“Nothing to worry about, Miss. I’m just used to arriving early.” Miao replied, lightly bowing and gesturing the way forward. “Shall we?” It was a long walk ahead of them, and there was visible worry on Miao’s face when she realized how long the commute would be for them to get to work everyday.
“Right, well I guess now is the best time to teach you.” Wish sighed, realizing how much she needed to teach her. “Look towards the Library, just right at the end of the bridge, and focus. Imagine yourself there right now.”
Miao looked to Wish and then to the building from afar, utterly baffled by this concept of focusing. However, when she did as instructed, she could feel her surroundings pulling her forward, like scenes overlapping and melting together. It started out slow, and then with a blink of an eye, she was there, standing right in front of the Library gates, even passing the garden and statues. Miao’s eyes widened as she looked around, unable to believe that it actually worked. Wish then popped up beside her, as if it was second nature.
“And to answer your question about how people don’t bump into each other when they teleport,” Wish then brought up as they both continued their way towards the backside of the pyramid. “You can feel a field of energy there that kind of bounces you off of the area when you push against it. There’s also sound queues, too. Like a bubbly warping sound.”
The attendant could tell that it was going to take a bit for the guard to get used to the ways of this world. She had to remind herself that not everyone adapted to the Realm as quickly as she did.
“Here’s also another fun tip.” Wish then said to Miao as they slowly approached the southern gates of the Library. “If you calm your mind down and be aware of your surroundings enough, you can feel the emotions and thoughts radiating out of other people.”
“That… sounds invasive.” The guardian spoke with a bit of discomfort as she took her spot in front of the door.
“It can be. Which is why we need to practice on where we put our focus and how much. The Realm is, as far as I know, heavily reliant on the stableness and flexibility of the mind.” Wish stepped into the gates as they opened up, and bright lights came shining from the inside. She turned and gave Miao one last look from head to toe. “You know what to do at your post?” She asked, just to make sure.
“When people step up, I can feel their intentions and their emotions, and the Library will tell me if they are allowed in.” Miao said, reciting what she was told by Adeina.
“Good. See you after work!” Wish waved and closed the door behind her.
The day seemed to pass by faster than usual when the attendant had a goal. It wasn’t because she was distracted, in fact, quite the opposite. She was very determined to do her job well so she can have a fulfilling time of self-discovery after work. She was surprised the sessions went by so quickly, one after another.
The closer she got to the end of the day, the more nervous she was, wondering how the cleaning process would go.
‘Will I discover more? Will I get stuck again? Will it be a fruitless day? What if it yields no results? Where should I even start? Perhaps matching the names of each document and putting all the same ones in one pile?’ All of these questions arise in her mind.
Once her shift was over, Wish walked out as excited as she was going in, despite her nervousness. “Hey, Miao.” She called out, tapping on her shoulder from behind. “I hope your shift went well?”
“I think… There was nobody that came back here until you came out.” Miao replied, turning around to face the woman. “Is the day over? It is hard to tell here…”
“Yes, there isn’t a day or night. Over time you start to develop an internal clock. Most of the time, it is kinda just a feeling that time is up.” The attendant explained, once again, she was reminded this was all natural to her. “Anyways, another lesson for another day, do you still feel well enough to assist with my room?” She asked, wanting to make sure it wasn’t too much for the woman.
“Yes.” Miao replied confidently, having no idea what other things she could be doing anyways. “I have questions about these… rooms, if you don’t mind answering.”
Wish was about ready to leave, the excitement welling up inside her didn't want to stop here. “Well, if you want, ask while we are walking.” She said, just wanting to get back to her own room.
Miao quickly followed up and spoke. “The rooms we are given, they seem to have a mind of their own, they react to how we think and what we need, is that correct?”
“Think or feel, yes. You are correct.” Wish answered, looking forwards as they exited the Library area. “It responds to any urges or needs you may have. Though, over time you can learn to live without such things.”
“...Without?” Miao repeated, just to make sure she heard correctly. “Such as?”
“Eating, sleeping, Showering, and… relieving yourself.” The attendant added, “Some people cling to such things for pleasure, but here in the Realms, it is not needed.”
Miao looked away, thoughtful about it. They walked in silence. Wish allowed the guard to take in the information. It certainly was something to think on for many people when they first learned about it. Even Wish herself needed a bit of time to get used to it.
“So… this um… Cleaning up your room…” Miao then spoke with hesitation in her voice. “It’s… helping you somehow?”
“In a way, yes.” The attendant quickly answered, but knew she had to elaborate somehow. “I am trying to remember some parts of my life, more importantly, my death. You are helping me link some dead ends together.” Before long, they found themselves at their destination.
“Do you lose memories here in the Realm?” Miao asked, staring at Wish’s room as the blonde opened up the door and walked right in. The blonde could feel the discomfort coming from the guard, fearing that she may lose the cherished memories of her friends and family before her death.
“No. I am just a special problem.” She replied, showing a bit of her depressed state once more, earning a frown from the guard. She paid no mind to it, and began the tidying process. Miao eventually entered the room and went along with it.
One day after another, it was the same routine. Go to work, come home with Miao to sort out more paperwork while she dusts and wipes things down. Wish was excited, but didn’t want to push it too far too quickly. They would always stop when she remembered everything she did at a specific company; the job, the schedules, the boss, the meetings and the co-workers. After Miao left, The blonde would then check if all the information she had secured from the previous days was still intact. Fortunately, it was.
“A memo for Yulious, they were my boss’s intern, nice guy and deserved way more than what they paid him.” Wish explained during one of their clean-ups, as she saw the man’s name on the paperwork. “Me and him talked a few times, and I always thought he was interested in… in…” The attendant’s mind drew a blank once more trying to remember the name.
She then scrambled to look for another paper, one with their name on it. “Mel… Prez… Yela… Tila, Tila! That was her name!” Wish said in excitement, waving the paper up. “Tila worked in the office above, and he would get in the elevator with her. He seems very fond of the woman.”
The blonde formed a fist and muttered a quiet ‘yes’ as she, once again, successfully recalled another past event.
As the days went by, Wish found herself dozing off less, and was able to maintain her focus more often. Her room went from the cluttered mess, to neat and organized. In return for the progress that has been made, the blonde would share some knowledge about the Realm with Miao whenever the opportunity presented itself. Things like the importance of focus and control of one’s mind, and how to shape reality accordingly; Methods to be still and calm; Methods of managing expectations and imaginations. It started with the easier concepts and putting them into practice, and then helping her overcome the daily tasks that needed to be performed to function. Like a reward for a good deed, the more Wish opened up to Miao, the clearer she was able to recall the details. It was almost like the guard was a catalyst to her memories. While cleaning, she stumbled across some documents belonging to another place called ‘Surian Consulting Firm’.
Wish stared at the name, feeling a memory trying to surface but was just out of reach. She tried to look up other documents about the company, hoping to have some item or keyword help push her mind to remember. She started to sort the papers in chronological order, slowly recalling them one by one. The restaurant she frequently visited, things she enjoyed with co-workers, and even her bosses meeting schedule; it was all a quick flash of memories until-
“The party!” Wish had gasped, setting her gaze on the guardian who was sweeping in front of her, pausing to look up when the exclamation was made. The questions from Gwady had finally made sense to her. The Party, the Driving, the Jobs. Not everything is well pieced together, but with her memories slowly returning, she had newfound hope in finally seeing the bigger picture; and perhaps… Gwady may finally allow her to run a session.
“Excuse me.” Wish said as she dropped everything and burst out the door, leaving Miao confused, stuck in mid-action with a broom still in hand. She watched as the attendant made a dash towards the Library, not even bothering to close the door behind her. Upon realizing that Wish probably won’t be back for a bit, Miao tidied up as much as she could and closed the door before leaving.
Without hesitation, the attendant rushed to Adeina’s office, wanting to ask her for a Library session and perhaps have her as the Library attendant since Gwady refused. Trying to force the session now, but still attempting to do it in a ‘legal’ way. When she busted into the office, her eyes locked onto Adeina immediately. It was only when she was about to speak up did she realize that Gwady was in the room, sitting in the shadows, watching Wish with a wide grin.
“I am ready.” She pressed before the woman could speak up. “I can feel it! I’m sure!”
“If you insist.” Gwady stands up from her seat and walks out of the shadows. They head out of the office and towards the session.
