Crista awoke the next morning feeling unrested, the events of the previous night replaying in her mind. She dragged herself out of bed, her thoughts drifting back to the figure in the alley.
“There’s nothing to worry about,” she muttered to herself as she prepared for the day. “It was just a creepy coincidence.”
She shook off her unease as she got dressed and grabbed a quick breakfast, determined to put the incident out of her mind. The city outside was still waking up, the streets gradually filling with people and the usual hustle and bustle.
She made her way to the nearby coffee shop for her morning caffeine fix, trying to distract herself with the comforting routine. As she waited for her order, her eyes wandered to the street outside, but she quickly looked away, not wanting to dwell on any shadows or figures that might be lurking.
Her phone buzzed with a message from Lisa.
Lisa: “Hey, you still up for lunch today? Let’s meet at Panera.”
Crista texted back quickly.
Crista: “Sure, I’ll see you there around noon.”
With the promise of a break from her thoughts, Crista sipped her coffee and mentally prepared for the day ahead.
At noon, she met Lisa at the cozy café, its warm atmosphere a welcome contrast to the cool morning air. They ordered their usuals and sat by the window, chatting as they ate.
“So, how’s your day been so far?” Lisa asked between bites of her sandwich.
Crista shrugged. “Pretty standard. Just trying to shake off that weird feeling from last night.”
Lisa looked concerned. “Still thinking about it?”
Crista nodded. “Yeah, but I’m trying to ignore it. I can’t let myself get freaked out over nothing.”
Lisa gave her a sympathetic look. “I hope you’re right. It’s just so unsettling with everything that’s been happening.”
Crista managed a smile. “Yeah, well, let’s focus on something more fun. Have you heard anything new about that club you were thinking of going to?”
Lisa’s eyes lit up. “Actually, yeah! I heard there’s a special event tonight. I was thinking of checking it out after work. Do you want to come?”
Crista hesitated. “I don’t know. I was planning to stay in tonight.”
Lisa pouted playfully. “Come on, it’ll be fun. You could use a night out. And besides, it’s a good way to take your mind off things.”
Crista considered it for a moment before giving in. “Alright, you’ve convinced me. I’ll go.”
Lisa grinned. “Great! I’ll pick you up after work then. It’ll be a blast!”
They finished their lunch, and Lisa headed back to work while Crista wandered the city, trying to enjoy her free time. She took a leisurely stroll through a nearby park, attempting to clear her mind and focus on the present.
As the afternoon wore on, she headed back to her apartment to get ready for the evening. She chose a casual yet stylish outfit, hoping to blend in and enjoy herself at the club.
When Lisa arrived to pick her up, Crista was ready, and they headed downtown together. The excitement of the evening helped distract Crista from the nagging feeling of unease that had been with her since the alley encounter.
They arrived at the club, the line outside buzzing with anticipation. The music pulsed through the walls, a promising backdrop to the night ahead. Lisa and Crista joined the crowd, excitement in the air.
Inside, the atmosphere was electric. The lights danced across the room, and the beats of the music were a welcome distraction. They ordered drinks and moved into the throng of people, letting the rhythm of the music carry them.
Hours passed in a blur of laughter, conversation, and dancing. Crista found herself caught up in the moment, her worries from the previous night gradually fading away.
As the night went on, she excused herself to the restroom. On her way back, she noticed a familiar figure in the corner of the club. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized it was the same person from the alley.
He was standing alone, his gaze fixed intently on her from across the room. A shiver ran down her spine as she met his eyes for a brief moment.
She tried to look away, but she could feel his gaze following her as she walked back to Lisa. Panic surged through her, but she forced herself to stay calm.
“Lisa, I think we should go,” she said, her voice barely above the noise of the club.
Lisa looked at her with concern. “Why? Are you okay?”
Crista nodded, trying to hide her anxiety. “Yeah, I just have a weird feeling. Let’s leave.”
Lisa agreed, and they made their way out of the club, the night air a cool relief against Crista’s flushed face.
As they walked back to Lisa’s car, Crista glanced over her shoulder, but the figure was gone. She let out a sigh of relief.
“What’s going on, Crista?” Lisa asked, glancing at her friend with a mixture of curiosity and concern.
Crista shook her head. “I’m not sure. I just had a strange feeling when I saw someone from earlier. Maybe I’m just imagining things.”
Lisa looked thoughtful. “Maybe you’re just tired. But if you need anything, I’m here.”
Crista appreciated the offer, even though she wasn’t sure how to explain what was really going on. “Thanks, Lisa. I’m fine. Let’s just head home.”
They drove back to Crista’s apartment, and Lisa dropped her off at the door. “See you tomorrow, Crista. Get some rest.”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow,” Crista said, watching as Lisa drove away.
As she stepped inside her apartment, the weight of the day’s events began to settle over her again. She tried to push the unease from her mind as she locked the door behind her.
But deep down, she knew that the figure she saw in the club was no coincidence. Something was coming, and she could feel it in her bones.
She settled onto the couch, her thoughts a tangled mess of worry and anticipation. As she stared at the blank TV screen, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her life was about to change in ways she couldn’t yet understand.
"Lisa, did you hear about the Seirs attack last night?"
"Yeah, it's getting out of hand, Crista. We can't ignore them forever."
"As long as they leave us alone, I'm fine. Let's stick to our work."
---
"There's a bonfire party at Riverside Park tonight. Live music, food, fun. You should come!"
"I don't know, Lisa. It sounds crowded and risky."
"Come on, just for a bit. It'll be a break from all this Seirs stuff."
---
"You're... you're one of them!"
"Easy, I won't hurt you. But you shouldn't be here."
"What do you want from me?"
---
"Are you okay, Crista? You look pale."
"I'm fine. Let's just stay here."
---
"Leaving so soon, Crista?"
"Stay away from me!"
"You can't escape this, Crista."
---
"Crista, you're getting too close to them. It's dangerous!"
"I can't explain it, Lisa. There's something about him..."
---
"You don't know the half of it, Crista. This city is ours."
"I won't be a part of your world!"
---
"You need to understand, Crista."
"Let me out! I won't stay here!"
---
"I won't let fear control me anymore."
"You're stronger than you think, Crista."
---
