The next day, Raven went to the hospital to drive Siren back home. The doctor had advised to limit her hand movements for a period of time to allow the wound to heal. Siren waited outside the door for Raven, who was in a phone call.
As she turned back to look for him, a woman came rushing forward, talking on her mobile. She didn't see Siren standing in her path. Just before the collision, Siren swiftly moved aside, preventing a possible injury to her hand.
The woman staggered and apologized to Siren without looking at her face, then hurried away, still on her call. Siren's eyes lingered on the woman, who appeared to be in her late thirties, dressed in an elegant green full-sleeved bodycon dress, with a neat bun atop her head.
What caught Siren’s attention was a prominent black mole on the woman's upper lip. Suddenly, a figure flashed before her eyes, making her head spin. She flinched in pain, clutching her forehead, and steadied herself by leaning against the nearby wall.
Raven, whose eyes coincidentally fell on her, immediately noticed her discomfort. He cut the call and rushed to her side, pulling her into his embrace.
“What happened?” he asked with
Siren shook her head and breathed deeply, her eyes still fixed on the spot where the woman had disappeared at the end of the corridor. Raven, noticing her gaze, looked in that direction but saw no one.
He narrowed his eyes but remained silent, choosing not to question her further.
Raven led Siren to the car and drove to the Grey’s mansion. He helped her into bed, tucked her under the blanket, and told her to rest. It was a working day, so Aiden had already gone to school under his father’s stern gaze, and Raven himself had a pile of work waiting at the office. He had decided to pick her up from the hospital first.
Just as he was about to leave, Siren’s voice stopped him.
“We can start the treatment tomorrow.”
Raven’s hand slipped from the doorknob as he turned to face her. His green eyes bore into hers with intensity. He walked back to her and leaned in close.
He lifted her chin with his long, slender fingers. A storm brewed behind her stoic electric blue eyes, and the corners of her eyes were red. He knew something was wrong when they left the hospital. He had already informed Hardin to check the CCTV of the city hospital as soon as he sensed something was off with his wife.
“Let’s wait until your wounds heal. I’ll take you to Lister,” he said, caressing her cheek with the back of his hand.
Siren slowly nodded. Raven leaned down and gently kissed her cheek, his lips lingering on her skin for a moment. Siren’s eyes flustered close, feeling the softness of his lips. Then he straightened up, patted her head, and left for his office.
At RedQueen, inside the CEO’s cabin, Hardin looked at the three figures who were chatting and laughing as if they were in a park. He held his forehead and regretted his decision to hire Sam under his wing.
“How long have you two been dating?” Hallie asked enthusiastically, addressing Ruth, who had come to drop off his boyfriend at the office.
Without thinking for a moment, Ruth answered immediately, “Sixteen years. He’s been my boyfriend since I was ten,” he stated proudly.
“Wow!” Hallie exclaimed in wonder, gushing over how cute and lucky they were to be lifelong soulmates.
Sam chuckled at her words, while Hardin couldn't believe his ears.
"Ten?! At that age, I was still clinging to my yellow duck in the bathtub, and you two were already dating?", he murmured under his breath.
Suddenly, Hardin's phone beeped with a message. Ignoring the trio's chatter, he checked his mobile and his brows furrowing in seriousness. The people inside the cabin noticed, and Hallie, understandingly, left the room.
She knew her grandson well and was aware of the work he was involved in. After all, she and her husband had been close friends of Conan Grey and had dealt with their fair share of tasks for him. When Conan retired, his close comrades, including Hallie and her husband, decided to pass their roles to the next generation.
This knowledge was not widespread within the Spencer family, only Hallie and her husband were aware. Although she had another grandson, Jacob Spencer, Hardin's older brother, he was not chosen for this responsibility. Hardin had proven himself capable and took over the position of Spotter from his grandfather, not to mention he had been friends with Raven since they were in diapers.
Once Hallie left the cabin, Hardin placed his mobile before them. Ruth calmly picked up the phone and read the text from Raven. Noticing Sam leaning in to catch a glimpse, he handed the phone to him.
Without a word, Sam took his tablet and hacked into the City Hospital’s security system, searching through the footage. When he found the relevant video from the morning, he extracted and saved it. As he played the video, Hardin stood up from his chair and positioned himself behind Ruth and Sam.
In the footage, Siren was waiting outside a door while Raven was on his phone. A woman, oblivious to Siren's presence, nearly collided with her. As the video continued, Siren's eyes fixated on the woman, and she soon clutched her forehead in apparent pain, her gaze remaining fixed on the woman until she disappeared.
Sam looked at Ruth and asked, "Did she remember something?"
Ruth looked back at Sam and replied, "Maybe she found the woman familiar, which triggered her memories."
Hardin looked back and forth between them, vaguely understanding what they were discussing. He had learned about his sister-in-law’s condition from Raven.
"But…" Ruth paused, as if something was bothering him.
"But what?" Hardin pressed, his patience wearing thin.
“That woman is the Mayor's wife,” Ruth finished his sentence.
Sam raised his brows in question. Understanding the unspoken words, Ruth explained further, “I’ve seen her a couple of times in our bar.”
“My, my, this is getting interesting,” Hardin grinned, returning to his chair. His fingers danced across the keyboard, and after a couple of minutes, a series of information displayed on the monitor.
“There you are!” Hardin exclaimed.
Ruth and Sam looked at him curiously. Hardin turned the screen towards them, revealing the information.
“She is Ursula Feller, wife of the city mayor, Richard Feller. You know, their love story is quite popular in the inner circle,” Hardin chuckled.
“Why? What happened?” Sam questioned, eager for the gossip.
“Of course, how could it not be? A woman falling in love with a man as old as her father,” Hardin clicked his tongue. “It was said that Richard met her in a bar and took a fancy to her. She was initially a mistress and slowly climbed to the position of legal wife after the late Mrs. Feller passed away from a heart attack.”
“Richard is under Raven’s radar. That man is quite arrogant and meddled in a couple of our business routes. Raven told me to dig up dirt on him for future use; that’s how I came to know about his wife.”
“A broken gun desires for a premium bullet!” Sam scoffed and looked at Hardin, and both broke into a fit of laughter.
“She must be related to Siren’s past”, Ruth’s solemn voice cut through the mirth.
The laughter ceased, and Sam cleared his throat. “We can’t do anything until Siren confirms it herself.”
“Hmm. Let’s wait for her recovery, then,” Ruth said, leaving the office and telling Sam he’d come back in the evening to pick him up.
Once Ruth left, Hardin asked Sam curiously, “Hey Silverhead, how old were you when you started dating him? Six? Seven? Or eight?”
Sam gave him a look that screamed, "You’re a lunatic," and replied, “Fourteen. I was fourteen when we started dating.”
Hardin blinked in confusion. “But he said you were his boyfriend since he was ten.”
“Yes. I’m four years older than him and three years older than you,” Sam stated as a matter of fact.
Hardin looked at him in disbelief.
How? How... the heck? No matter which angle one looked at this silverhead, no one would believe he’s thirty. If someone said he was in his last year of high school, Hardin would believe it without a doubt.
But thirty?
Hardin stood up expressionlessly, took out a sticky note from his drawer, and slammed it on the table.
“Write down your secrets.”
Sam blinked innocently at him.
