My Last Hope

17 - Bruise

17 - Bruise

Jul 25, 2024

Mrs. Hudson was done with her analysis. "How nice that a lady like you is her friend!" Suddenly the air around her changed, her loud clap startled Elizabeth. She started placing the cookies from the tray on the plate one by one. "I sometimes find her sitting on the sidewalk in front of her house, thinking deeply about something. She smiles as soon as she sees me, not to make me worry. I was worried that she would feel lonely when her sister stopped visiting her. Fortunately, you came."

A sister? So Katherine had a sister…

"Here you go! We can eat these in the garden with Katherine. You go first, I'll bring some tea in a minute."

"B- but I should help you-"

Mrs. Hudson shoved the plate into Elizabeth's hand. "I'm not that old, pretty girl, I can clean my own kitchen! Come on, take the cookies before they get cold!"

Elizabeth felt as if she was losing her will in this woman's hands. She opened the door and went out into the garden. It wasn't hard to find Katherine. All she had to do was to follow the noise. When she walked into the back garden, she found the dog with a hose in it’s mouth soaking Katherine. The dog was whining and whirling around her excitedly. Katherine was trying to protect herself from the water, but at the same time, she couldn't stop laughing. It was the first time Elizabeth had ever seen her laugh like that. Suddenly… What was that? Did her heart throb just because she saw Katherine laugh?

Katherine finally found an opening and picked up the dog in her arms and laid it on the ground. They looked like two bear cubs playing with each other.

During their wrestling, they heard the sound of a laughter and both of them stopped their fight and looked in the direction of the sound. Elizabeth could no longer contain herself at the sight. The dog had finished fighting with Katherine, he stood up and sat down, wagging his tail violently.

Katherine was still lying on the ground, gasping for breath, “No round two? You scared of losing! Ha! Of course you are… I can… I can do this all day Chucky boy!”

Chuck quickly and excitedly began licking Katherine's face, "Ah! Help! HELP! Okay, you win! You win!"

Mrs. Hudson called after Elizabeth, a tray with cups in her hand, “Enough you two! Stop lifting the soil and then there will be dust everywhere!”

Chuck slowly walked over to the old woman like a scolded child. Meanwhile, Elizabeth put the cookies down on the table, took the towel Mrs. Hudson handed her and went to Katherine’s side. As Katherine sat watching the garden, Elizabeth leaned over. “Here.”

Katherine took the towel from her, “Thanks.” She wiped her face, then started wiping her neck. Her wet t-shirt revealed all the curves of her body. Elizabeth ran her gaze over Katherine from top to bottom, lingering longer than necessary.

“Cute, right?” Suddenly, Katherine looked at her.

Elizabeth's eyes widened and her face turned completely red. “Wha- Wha- What? No, I- I mean yes! More like attractive I guess…? I mean! I didn’t mean it that way! I-”

Katherine looked at her in confusion, “Chuck is attractive?”

“Wh- Who?”

Elizabeth turned to look at Mrs. Hudson's dog, who was eating the treat he had been given. “Oh… You mean… Chuck. That’s right…”

Mrs. Hudson yelled at Katherine, “Katherine! Go take a shower! You'll be sick!”

Katherine stood up and started walking towards the house, “Yes Mrs. Hudson…” Katherine smirked ever so slightly as she walked, the corner of her lips curling. No one noticed, though.

A few minutes later Elizabeth found herself in front of an upstairs room in Mrs. Hudson's house. Mrs. Hudson had given her a t-shirt to give to Katherine. But for some reason, Elizabeth could not get into the room. Haah… What am I doing…? Just get in already… She had even witnessed her brother’s friends taking off their t-shirts while playing sports. But she had never felt… awkward like this.

If she didn't go in now and leave the clothes inside, Katherine would come out of the bathroom and things would get even more awkward. Gathering her courage, she knocked on the door and opened it. Perfect, Katherine was not out of the shower yet.

The room looked like a children's room. Perhaps this was the bedroom of the child Mrs Hudson had lost, Allen. The room was spotlessly clean and very tidy. It was preserved as if someone still lived there. She took a few steps inside and approached the bed. Placing the t-shirt on the bed, she reached for the photograph on the bedside table. It was a family photo. Mother, father and a child. They had a big smile on their faces. It was lovely. She never took a photo like this with her family. In addition to that, other than their one family photo, there were no photo of her.

“Elizabeth?”

She was startled by the sound coming behind her. She quickly turned in the direction of the sound. Katherine was standing in the doorway of the bathroom with a towel drying her hair. She was, fortunately, wearing a sports bra and sweat pants. Involuntarily, Elizabeth’s eyes fell on Katherine's naked body. Suddenly it was as if her body started burning. Her eyes widened. She gasped. Katherine had a huge bruise on her abdomen. “What’s that...?”

WARNING: This story includes suicide/self-harm attempt. Please be aware.

Katherine tried to catch her breath, "Miss- Haah... Miss, are you all right?" The woman's head moved slightly. At first, her gaze wandered into the void and then she raised her head and met Katherine's eyes. Katherine was momentarily surprised by the irises set like diamonds in woman’s tearful eyes. They were beautiful.

The woman's expression was not one of fear, but rather of disappointment. Her cheeks were wet with tears. Katherine was shocked, but before she could get over her surprise, the woman raised her head to the sky and closed her eyes. She was expressionless.

'Did she gave up?' Katherine thought to herself. She had no idea what the woman was going through or who she was, but for now, all she wanted to do was to save this woman. A tear fell from the woman's closed eye. It landed on her chin and fell into the void.
