Jana's interest piqued, and she leaned closer to the monitor, her eyes narrowing.
The young man hesitated, glancing at the mirrored wall, knowing that the people behind it were waiting for his answer. "I don't know their name," he finally said. "But they gave me this." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic device.
The officers exchanged glances and carefully took the device from him. Jana recognized it instantly—a standard issue from the agency, used only by high-ranking officials. Her mind raced, considering the implications of an inside betrayal.
"Where did you meet this person?" the officer continued, his tone slightly more urgent.
"They contacted me," the young man replied, his voice shaky. "Told me to meet them at an old coffehouse from my time. Said they'd get me inside the so rumored agency if I did exactly as they instructed."
Jana's heart pounded in her chest. She needed to find out who within the agency had orchestrated this breach. She stood up, leaving her soda untouched, and walked swiftly to the control room where the lead investigator was monitoring the interrogation.
"We need to trace that device," Jana said, her voice firm and commanding. "And find out who had access to it."
The lead investigator nodded. "Already on it, Agent Minters. We'll pull the records and cross-reference with personnel movements."
Jana felt a mix of anger and determination. Someone within their ranks was jeopardizing the integrity of the agency, and she was going to find out who. She couldn't afford any loose ends, especially not with the delicate balance of time they maintained.
The investigator's console beeped, signaling the trace results. He scanned the data quickly, his expression darkening. "The device was checked out by Agent Stone."
Jana's eyes widened in shock. Agent Stone was one of the most trusted members of the agency, known for his impeccable record and loyalty. She couldn't believe he would betray them.
" bring him in " Jana ordered.
The investigator nodded and dispatched a team to apprehend Agent Stone. As they moved to execute the order, Jana's thoughts swirled. The betrayal cut deep, but she knew she had to remain focused.
Minutes later, the team returned with Agent Stone in custody. He was brought into the interrogation room, his expression stoic. Jana watched from the monitor, steeling herself for what was to come.
"Agent Stone," the officer began, "we have reason to believe you assisted in the unauthorized breach of the agency."
Stone's eyes flicked up, meeting the gaze of the officers. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said evenly.
"We traced the device used by the intruder back to you," the officer stated, holding up the evidence.
Stone's face remained impassive. "There must be some mistake. I would never compromise the agency."
Jana felt a pang of doubt but pushed it aside. She needed answers. She pressed the intercom button, her voice echoing into the interrogation room. "Agent Stone, if you're innocent, help us understand how this device came into the intruder's possession."
Stone looked directly at the camera, his eyes cold. "I don't know. I Swear"
"We'll see, Agent Stone. For now, you're relieved of duty until we get to the bottom of this." Said the officer in charge.
Jana nodded, her mind already shifting to other concerns. She walked back to her office, the rhythm of the Office's daily operations a familiar backdrop to her thoughts. Suddenly, a silent alarm beeped on her wrist communicator. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw the source: the orb room. As she got out of the office, she noticed that many on-duty officers had disappeared. Just as she was about to report it, she heard a distant, muffled sound that made her blood run cold.
Jana sprinted through the corridors, her breath quickening. The usually bustling hallways were eerily quiet, the absence of personnel amplifying her growing sense of dread. She arrived at the orb room and keyed in her access code. The door slid open, revealing her brother, Jade.
"Jade," she breathed, her voice a mix of shock and confusion ."What are you doing here?"
Jade turned slowly, a smug grin on his face. "Hello, sister. What are you doing here, where is the intruder?"
Her shock turned to cold fury she realized what her brother was up to. "You... it was you all along. You orchestrated the breach."
Jade chuckled, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Oh, Jana, always so quick on the uptake. Jade's grin widened. " the power of the orb is too great to be controlled by a single entity. Imagine what we could do with it, Jana. We could reshape history, bend time to our will. No more being pawns in someone else's game."
In a flash, Jade lunged towards the orb, his hand outstretched. Jana reacted instantly, her training kicking in as she tackled him to the ground. They struggled, each fighting for control, their movements a blur of raw energy and determination.
"Stop this, Jade!" Jana yelled, her voice strained with effort. "You're going to destroy everything!"
"Not if I get to it first," Jade hissed, shoving her aside and scrambling towards the orb once more.
Jana reached for her neutralizer, aiming it at her brother. "I don't want to do this, Jade. But I will if I have to."
Jade paused, his eyes locking onto hers. For a moment, a flicker of doubt crossed his face. "You wouldn't."
"Try me," Jana replied, her voice icy.
Without another word, Jana lunged at him. They clashed, the orb slipping from Jade's grasp as they fought. Each move was precise, their years of training evident in the fluidity of their combat.
Jana managed to knock the orb away from him, but Jade was quick. He pushed her back and made a desperate grab for it. Just as his fingers brushed the orb, Jana activated the emergency transport device on her wrist, intending to send the orb to a secure location.
But Jade grabbed her, and the transport field enveloped them both. The room vanished around them, replaced by a swirling vortex of light and sound.
They landed with a splash, cold water engulfing them.
