LIAM
He asked me to text him. Oh my god.
I’m sitting on my bed, phone out, Messages app open, cursor blinking menacingly.
…What do I say? “Hi, it’s Liam?” No. I need more. Something clever, something with just the right amount of humor.
But I can’t think of anything. Not one single idea comes to mind. So I guess “Hi, it’s Liam” will have to do. I’m not even in the room with him, and it’s not like he can sense my hesitation, but my body pays these simple facts no mind and my face heats up, a glance in the mirror on the other side of my room telling me that it’s turned bright red, too.
Liam
Hi, it’s Liam.
Oscar
hey
Liam
What’s up?
Oscar
not much, hbu?
Liam
Same.
I don’t know what else to say. I want to get past the awkward “how are you whatcha up to” phase as quickly as possible, but I’m stuck with my thumbs hovering over the keyboard while the three dots that indicate whether Oscar is typing appear and disappear. But I’m saved when my phone pings again.
Oscar
hey, random question but do you wanna go see a movie with my friends and i on saturday?
Ohmygodohmygod. Is this a date? No, no, his friends will be there. And there is no way he likes me like that.
Liam
Sure, sounds fun! Just tell me when to be there!
Oscar
you bet!
Why is he so adorable? “You bet?” Who says that?
