CHAPTER FOUR

I stood by the window in the infirmary, the late morning sun casting a warm glow on the stone floor. After several days confined to the room, my body had healed enough for me to venture out. Miriam, gave me a reassuring smile.

"You're free to venture out now, dear. You've been cooped up in here for far too long. Go and explore the castle."

I hesitated, feeling uncertain. "But... I'm not sure where to go or what to do."

Miriam seemed to sense my curiosity beneath the nervousness. "Just follow your instincts. The castle has many interesting corners. You'll find your way."

I nodded, taking a deep breath as I moved towards the door. My heart raced with a mix of excitement and apprehension. The castle was vast, and I had barely seen any of it during my stay. I opened the door and stepped into the corridor, feeling a sense of freedom and anticipation.

***
I wandered through the hallways, my steps echoing softly against the stone. The grand tapestries and polished armor displays hinted at the castle's rich history. Soon, I found myself in a bustling part of the castle, where servants moved with purpose.

"Hello there," I said, my voice wavering slightly.

A young maid looked up from her task, smiling warmly. "Good day, miss. I'm Lila, and this is Mara." Lila, petite with dark hair tied back in a neat bun, had bright, curious eyes. Mara, taller with auburn hair and a gentle demeanor, nodded in greeting.

"I'm Elara. It's a pleasure to meet you both. I'm still finding my way around."

Lila's smile widened. "If you don’t mind, we’d be happy to show you around, miss. There's so much to see."

"Thank you. I'd love that." I replied.

We started in the laundry area, where the hum of activity filled the air. The maids moved swiftly, their hands skilled and efficient.

“This is where we sort out the clothing and beddings before taking them outside for washing.” Lila said.

"It keeps us quite busy," Mara added.

"It must be a lot of work. Do you ever get any free time?" I asked.

"Not much, but we manage. It's rewarding in its own way, knowing we keep the household running smoothly."

Next, we moved to the kitchen, filled with delicious aromas and the clatter of pots and pans.

"Hello! Something smells wonderful in here," Lila said as she entered the kitchen, with Mara and I following right behind.

The cook, a stout woman with a flour-dusted apron, turned with a smile. "Ah, you must be hungry, Lila. Mara. Welcome. We're just preparing the midday meal."

“Not quite. We are just showing the young miss around the Castle.” Lila corrected the cook.

Noticing me for the first time, the cook’s eyes widened “oh my, apologies.  Welcome miss. Should we prepare a plate for you?” she asked, now a big smile plastered on her face.

I felt a flush rise to my cheeks, my nerves bubbling up. I glanced down, uncertain of how to respond. "Oh, um, thank you. It does smell delicious."

The cook’s smile softened, sensing my discomfort. "Don't worry, dear.”
“What are you making?" I asked.

"Roast pheasant with herbs from the garden, and a hearty stew. We always aim to please," she replied.

"I would love to learn some of your recipes. Cooking seems like such a creative and satisfying task," I said, feeling more at ease.

"You're welcome anytime, miss. We'll make a chef out of you yet."

"Thank you. I might just take you up on that," I smiled.

Once I was done, I thanked the cook for the delicious food and gave one last appreciative glance at the bustling kitchen before moving on.

After our time in the kitchen, Lila and Mara left to return to their tasks, and I found myself alone. I took a deep breath and continued my exploration, heading towards the garden with a renewed sense of curiosity.

In the garden, I admired the colorful blooms and neat rows of herbs. The gardener, a middle-aged man with weathered hands and a kind smile, tended to a patch of roses.

"Good day, miss. Enjoying the garden?"

"Very much. It's beautiful here."

"Thank you. Feel free to sit and relax. The sun is just right today."

I found a wrought iron chair nestled among the flowers and sat down, closing my eyes and breathing in the fragrant air. The gentle warmth of the sun and the scent of blooming flowers provided a welcome respite.

As I sat there, soaking in the tranquility, the sharp clash of metal disrupted the peace. My eyes snapped open, curiosity piqued. I decided to follow the sound, weaving through the garden and slipping through a gate that led to the training grounds.

Peering around a corner, I saw soldiers training intensely, their swords gleaming in the sunlight. The ground was marked with the wear of countless drills, and the air was filled with the shouts of men and the clanging of weapons.

In the center of it all was a man commanding the field with authority and grace. His movements were precise, his strength evident in every swing of his sword. I watched him, captivated by his prowess.

He looks so handsome... and strong. How can someone be so powerful and yet so graceful?

I stayed hidden, my heart racing. The man’s focused expression and the way he commanded his men fascinated me, and I felt a growing crush on him.

"Alright, take a break. We'll resume in ten," he called out.

As the soldiers dispersed, he glanced around, almost sensing my presence. I quickly retreated, my face flushed with the excitement of my secret observation. Just as I thought I had escaped unnoticed, I bumped into Gareth.

"Ah, Elara. Enjoying the sights?"

"Y-yes, just exploring. I didn't mean to intrude."

Gareth smiled kindly, offering his arm. "Shall I escort you back?"

I nodded, taking his arm. As we walked away, I glanced back one last time. The man stood by the training ground, his eyes meeting mine for a brief moment. In that instant, time seemed to slow down. His gaze softened as he saw me, his expression unreadable but intense. I felt my cheeks heat up, and I quickly turned away, my heart pounding.

As we continued walking, I couldn't help but smile. The brief connection left me feeling a mix of embarrassment and exhilaration. His presence had an undeniable impact on me, and I couldn’t shake the image of him from my mind.

Gareth noticed my flustered state but said nothing, a knowing smile playing on his lips. As we neared the castle entrance, I glanced back one more time, seeing him still watching me. He gave a slight nod before turning back to his men.

My heart fluttered at the silent acknowledgment, a small smile playing on my lips as I walked back with Gareth. The castle felt a little less daunting, my curiosity leading me to new discoveries and feelings I had never expected.

***
As Gareth and I walked back to the infirmary, I felt a mix of emotions swirling inside me. The warmth of the sun, the scents of the garden, and the sight of the soldiers training—all of it made me feel more alive than I had in days. But there was also the flutter of nerves in my stomach, especially after that intense, fleeting moment with the man in the training grounds.

"Did you enjoy your tour, Elara?" Gareth asked, his voice breaking the silence.

I nodded, trying to keep my voice steady. "Yes, I did. It's a beautiful place."

Gareth's smile was kind. "I'm glad to hear that. Did you make any friends?"

I hesitated, feeling shy and reserved. "I... met a few people. Lila and Mara, the maids. And the cook, too. Everyone was very kind."

Gareth nodded, his expression thoughtful. "That's good. It's important to feel comfortable here. This castle is your home now, at least until you get your memory back."

We walked in silence for a few moments, the sound of our footsteps echoing softly off the stone walls. I felt a strange mix of relief and anxiety, grateful for Gareth's kindness but still wary of my uncertain future.

As we reached the infirmary, Miriam greeted us with a warm smile. "Welcome back, Elara. I see you’ve had a bit of an adventure."

I smiled back, feeling a bit more at ease in her presence. "Yes, it was nice to get out and see the castle."

Gareth's gaze shifted to Miriam, his concern evident. "How has her recovery been, Miriam?"

Miriam nodded reassuringly. "Elara is making excellent progress. She's much stronger now."

Gareth turned to me, his expression softening. "I'm glad to hear that. Your recovery has been remarkable, Elara. It's important that you continue to rest and take things slowly."

I nodded, feeling a warm glow at his words. "Thank you, Gareth. I'll do my best."

Gareth hesitated for a moment, then asked, "Elara, have you remembered anything yet?"

I shook my head, feeling a pang of frustration and sadness. "No, I still can't remember anything."

Miriam placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "It will come in time. Just focus on getting better."

Gareth gave me a reassuring smile before turning to leave. "If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. I'll check on you again soon."

As he walked away, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude and relief. Gareth’s presence, along with Miriam’s care, had become a source of stability in my otherwise uncertain world. Their kindness and concern offered a glimmer of hope, a reminder that I wasn’t alone.

Miriam guided me back to my bed, her touch gentle. "You’ve had quite a day, haven’t you?"

I nodded, feeling the weight of the day's events settling in. "Yes, it was a lot to take in."

Miriam smiled softly, tucking the blankets around me. "Rest now. You’ve earned it."

As I lay back, I couldn't help but replay the events of the day in my mind. The warmth of the sun in the garden, the clashing of swords, and the intense gaze of the man in the training grounds—all of it swirled together in a vivid tapestry of new experiences and emotions.
