As Anastacia holds herself from laughing at what Iara said and the overly offended reaction Lily gave she notices that the worry and sadness she felt the past week is almost gone, which makes the feeling come back twice as strong, her shoulders feel heavy and she immediately feels exhausted, how could she get over her disease if she is already feeling butterflies on her stomach after hearing one joke from Iara.
Without saying another word Anastacia gets up walking towards the teacher. "Could we start the presentations? I need to call my dad and would love to do it fast."
"Oh sure honey, are you feeling well? If something happened please talk to a teacher ok?" Mrs Diaz touches her shoulder with a worried look, Anastacia gives a small smile that she hopes looks real enough for the teacher.
"I'm fine, it's just a lot, could Iara and I do our dance now?" The woman nodded with a smile, while the cheerleader went back to her chair the teacher was already giving the information that everyone should have their projects organized and that the exhibition would begin with Anastacia and Iara.
The two girls quietly moved to the front of the class, Carol and Josh screamed words of support for the cheerleader while Lily whispered "kick her ass" to Iara. Getting to be the center of attention is nothing unusual for one of them, while Iara doesn't particularly enjoy it, the cheerleader thrives in these situations.
"Hello, we will be doing a performative dance that perfectly encapsulates what it feels to look at The Scream, or what the painting is feeling, as much as it would be better with no sound, I was convinced to have at least a background music, after careful consideration we decided to use Lacrimosa, so that the music doesn't detract from your experience. Wanna add anything?" All of the words she said came with a formal cadence, in a loud but firm voice, except the last line directed at Iara, she doesn't hide the fact that she loathes having to talk to her partner, the only difference is that the hating comes from a different place now.
"No. Let 's just dance." Iara presses play on the already edited song, she already connected her phone to the speakers while Anastacia was talking and after leaving it on the teacher's table she quickly walks behind Anastacia.
The dance begins when the cheerleader slowly moves her arms up and to the side, Iara's hands running from Anastacia's palms to her shoulders, almost as if controlling her. The point of the dance is to feel rushed but slow, Anastacia is always fighting, but losing, against the moves Iara wants to make. The former looks at the audience meeting some of the curious eyes of her classmates, she notices some texting, others holding laughter, she is starting to feel a little self conscious, as Iara's right hand moves on the cheerleader's body, running from her shoulder to her chest and stopping at the neck for a moment before two finger touch her jawline turning her head, making the two lock eyes.
Anastacia forgets that they are in a class, or that she hates Iara, she could lose herself in a second in those hazel eyes, the other girl is so focused on the dance that she doesn't even see the hunger behind Anastacia's eyes. Iara is happy to be able to stay behind for most of the dance, she did have to learn the moves alone for the past week because she didn't want to be a burden, but she still needs to fully pay attention to remember the next moves.
Anastacia's does a perfect spin as she moves away from Iara, but as she leaves she lets the tattooed girl hold her hand, stopping her from moving away, the former hopes that the blush on her face can be confused with exhaustion, when Iara pulls her close Anastacia loses balance on her left foot falling on the arms of the other girl.
"You ok?" Iara asks in a whisper that only Anastacia can hear, the music begins to enter its crescendo and she knows that she needs to leave Iara's embrace and go back to dancing but she hardly has the strength to do that.
With a small nod in agreement Anastacia moves away, she looks at the class again, wiping the small amount of sweat that decided to run its course on her face, when she doesn't have to feel Iara's body against hers dancing feels almost like an afterthought, her steps perfectly matching the beats of the song, she could never feel embarrassment from dancing it's one of the only moments she is truly free, but it seems that even that Iara has taken from her. When she lets herself fall so that her partner has to grab her, she finds herself once again wanting to say goodbye to her reputation, friends and beliefs just for one kiss.
Iara looks down on Anastacia, she holds the other girl from falling one hand on her chest and the other on her cheeks while the closing moments of the song shower the classroom with its vocals. Anastacia's hands are clutching against Iara's back, the two move a little later than what they rehearsed, but Iara's hands advances from the other girl's upper body stopping at her waist, helping her up.
Anastacia rises up with Iara's help, trying to keep her breathing controlled, she feels as the fingers on her waist begin to hold her with more purpose and in less than a second she is leaping with the help of the other girl, she is used to jumping, be it alone or with another person but as she moves through the air there's no happiness. When she lands, still being touched by Iara's hand, there's no feeling of success, she just feels an incredible sadness.
Because now, there's no need to ever talk to Iara again.
The teacher slowly claps with a smile after the music dies down. "That was great ladies, I would ask you to explain it, but I think it was pretty understandable through the dance, great job!"
Separating their bodies Iara realizes that Anastacia doesn't bother to look at her, after getting the confirmation of Mrs Diaz the other girl hastily leaves the classroom, without actually taking her phone with her or explaining anything. While the teacher clarifies that Anastacia warned her about having to call a family member, Iara uses this as a perfect opportunity to sit down without getting any more unwanted looks from the students.
"That was fucking sick! I didn't know you could actually dance and not just twerk!" Lily expressed her disbelief as soon as Iara sat down.
"What? I already danced like this at parties, the fuck do you mean?" she remembers mostly dancing like this and not just tweaking, all you needed was a little bit of alcohol and she would be on the dance floor.
Lily's face turns into a frown, it seems all the happiness she felt vanished. Her left hand travels over Carol's desk landing on top of Iara's shoulder, the shorter girl says with sadness deeply rooted in her voice. "Yeah... but you danced like shit."
"No I didn't! Did i?" Iara tries to remember the times she was dancing like there was no tomorrow, trying to ignore the loud laughter coming from Lily.
Carol sits in the middle of them not really paying attention to their conversation, more focused on trying to piece together a theory, she has been with Anastacia for years and in all those years she managed to have a pretty good understanding of her friend. Which is why she gets more confused by every action that doesn't feel like the Anastacia she knows.
Inviting a stranger to sit with them, getting angry at said stranger for denying it, getting obsessed with her, lying, tricking and getting violent, that's not the friend she admires. But the major difference is in her eyes. Whenever Anastacia was with Adam her eyes didn't show any desire, Carol assumed it was because she was a prude showered in chastity. But after watching a dance where her friend was undressing Iara with her eyes every second of it and she had a hunger in her eyes close to that of Asmodeus, Carol has a mystery to solve.
Is Anastacia in love with Iara?
