I was right about the interaction not ending well for Arthur. My sister used the pan she had in her hand and took it upon herself to beat the bully with it. I didn't assume she would have taken it that far, especially when it comes to defending me, but I am appreciative nonetheless. I think. Well, I would be if we weren't both sitting in the principal's office right now, awaiting punishment. I'm sitting in an old wooden chair just outside the principal's office door, my sister doing the same. We're both listening to the dean talking to my father about the incident. We can't hear much except the word “Expelled” being thrown around every now and again.
“ What do you think they're talking about?” Gabi says to me.
“ I hope they're just gonna send us back to class or something.” I say, though I am doubtful
“ Yeah right, after what I did?”
“ You were kind of overkill.”
“ No, I think he got what he deserves.”
“ I don't think anyone deserves to get a pan flung at their head from the other end of the hallway.” I say as I roll my eyes.
“ That was kinda cool, though, I was like 20 feet away from him and STILL got a headshot with the pan.” Gabriella chuckles and elbows me waiting for me to agree with her.
I glare at her as she says this. She seems to get the message and settles back down.
" What were you even doing with pan anyways?"
" Well, we were about to cook something in home EC when we noticed that one of the pans was rusting and needed to be thrown out so Ms. Conner told me to throw it out outside."
" God, you LOVE convenience, don't you?" I ask her sarcastically.
The door to the dean's office opens and my father comes out with a piece of paper in hand. He doesn't look happy, giving both me and Gabriella an angered glare. Any hope I had for getting out of this situation without getting grounded for eternity is immediately shot down with this stare. Though maybe he’s just mad at my sister. Hopefully not too bad though.
My father snaps his finger at me and Gabi and motioned for us to follow him out of the school. Neither of us mutter a word as we make our way to the car. Even after getting into the car and leaving school, we didn’t dare to say anything. I think both of us fear whatever reprehension would be lashed at us by our father if we did say something wrong.
“ So, how’d your meeting go?” I hear from my sister who was in the back seat because apparently she can’t read the room for the life of her.
My father glared at her through the rear-view mirror.
“Oh, actually it went great, Gabriella, thanks for asking.” My father said in a deceptively cheery tone.
“ It went great until I got a call that my daughter decided to beat some kid with a pan, and I had to skip out on the meeting to pick her and her brother up. That sound familiar, Gabi?” He scowls in a more appropriate tone of voice.
“ Okay, well do be fair, River was getting beat by him so.” Gabi said, trying to defend herself.
“ River can defend himself.”
“ He definitely CANNOT.”
“ Okay well, that’s his problem.” My father says, admitting I probably couldn’t win a fight if I tried, which I was moderately offended by. Why do they talk like I am not literally in the car with them?
“ You don’t have to rack up assault charges to protect him. Your ass is lucky I paid off the kid’s parents so they wouldn’t press charges.”
“ Okay so… whatever.” Gabriella finally says, admitting defeat.
“ No, not ‘whatever’, your actions have consequences. Both of you are grounded for the next two weeks, and I’m moving you guys to public school.”
“ WHAT?!” Both me and Gabi said in unison.
“ Why am I being punished, I didn’t throw the pan?” I say.
“ Yeah! Also isn’t moving schools a little excessive?” Gabi defensively chimes in from the back seat.
“ Not when you’ve already been expelled, no it’s not.” My father asserts.
“ Both of us have been expelled? I DIDN’T EVEN DO ANYTHING!” I say again, hoping for an answer.
“ No, only Gabriella, but I’m moving you too so I don’t have to drive to three different schools each morning.”
“ You can’t just pull me out of school like that, what about… my… friends?”
My father side-eyes me. He knows I don't have any friends. I also know this, but I just wanted to convince him not to move me to public school too. I would hate to mess up such a large part of my life like that. I decide against arguing any further.
“ Sorry, but you guys leave me no choice. Maybe after you finish this semester with no more mishaps I can move you guys back, but for now, you’ll be going somewhere else. This seems to shut my sister up. I think it was more shame and embarrassment than anything, but either way, she was quiet until we got home.
