David stayed on his position not making a single move. The musketoon is able to make only one shot, after which would go a very longtimed reload, but the gun was too close to him, so he couldn't just dodge the shot. Meanwhile Rumier was looking at scared guy full of joy with a smile on his face. He was very glad that he caught a man that caused too many problems to the Father, the God and the whole cult at all.
- Do you know this guy?
- “He was the fifteen one's best friend. They've been transfered to this world together. My past ally decided to fight against Deppart, but Rumier chose another way. A way of eternal life. He betrayed his friend and threw him to the prison and became Father's personal servant. Soon I helped that prisoner to get out like you did.”
- Is there a way to escape from him?
- “Not sure. This time you have to deal with him without my help. ”
- Why I should do this alone? Can't you just talk to him?
- “He won't listen to me. ”
- What is the reason?
- “I'm an ally of his enemy, good reason, isn't it? ”
Ending up his concentration on speech with the Malice , David looked directly at Rumier, who was already slowly pulling musketoon's trigger.
- I know, I can sound like a crazy man but…can you let me go?
- Even my past friend was smarter than you. Why does our Greatest Master chooses fools like you to enter this world?
- You betrayed your friend, why?
- How did you…? Ah, that awful shadow told you about that, am I right? I didn't betray Gordon. I just chose my own side.
- And you really don't wish to return home?
- Return home for that damn life I had? No relatives, always having no money and still paying for debt. That also led to starving… Have you ever heard about conscious dreams where you can control your brain's reality as you wish? This is the same place and MUCH better. I have power, I'm rich like king and I have family I dreamed about all my life. I came here from the 15th century. My body died lots of years ago but in this world I can live in peace forever. And I won't let you to break my heaven…
The last line wasn’t spoke to the very end. David shortened his distation to the Rumier, grabbed his hand with the weapon and threw Rumier’s body over his back. David saw this move on the TV-show about judo. As he remembered, this trick is named “Seoi Nage”. After a hard falling Rumier couldn’t breathe, not even talking about aiming and shooting. David took the pistol from the blond, and then stunned him with a sharp blow to the carotid artery.
- “Now you’re the king here. Nicely done. Will you kill him?”
- No. He’s already dead in the real world. If I kill him here too, I’m sure I’ll be feeling myself a moral bastard till the end of my life…
- “What about the father? He won’t allow us to leave this city alive. And if you die – it’s Game Over, man, Game Over!”
- Actually I don’t know much about his life before this place, so nothing prevents me from killing that creaker.
- “And what are your plans?”
- His death mustn’t look like a murder. Perhaps, only if he chokes with something or… how is good this world in identifying poisons?
- “I highly doubt that Deppart brought to this world too many pharmacists so this variant sounds good.”
- Do local herbalists have “Atropa belladonna”?
- “Yes, but…are you sure this plant suits our situation?”
- Poisoning with its berries causes convulsions, loss of sanity, increased body temperature, and death due to paralysis of the respiratory center. Very useful.
- “Search Rumier, he may have valuable information, or ammunition for your new toy.”
Approaching the priest's body and feeling his pockets, David found two bags with metal balls and gunpowder. There was also a cleaning rod and a bottle of gun oil for cleaning the barrel.
- "This guy clearly loves his gun..."
- If only I knew where he got it in these Middle Ages. In the real world, he could have had a blunderbuss, but by the standards of this world, that era was still about three centuries away... And what is this? A note?
- "Most likely, it's from Father."
"Dear Rumière, today, according to annual tradition, the best restaurant will host a feast for all the clergy, where you are an obligatory guest. Come at 7 pm to this address (if you forgot it): Versailles St., 13.
P.S. Take a thick rope and a whip with you. After the feast, we will have something to discuss in my chambers, I think you understand what I mean. Don't tell your wife anything."
- "Now we know the exact location of Father, the perfect place from which he will be carried out later."
- But what did he mean in "P.S."?
- "It doesn't concern us. Now let's hurry, before that blond guy wakes up."
- There are two problems: I have nowhere to hide the blunderbuss and the book, and my marks make me stand out on the street.
- "I can erase your marks, my ability allows it. And there is a broken space for luggage."
- What the hell is this?
- "By canceling the magic of Deppart, I can create gaps in his world into which various objects can be placed."
- Is this like "Inventory" in games?
- "Something like that, and now hide your gun with the key and run for flowers for the feast. A great gift for Father, he will simply die of delight!"
Having shoved his things into the black gap that Malice created near David's right hand, he ran away from the church. From his arrival, he remembered that at the exit from the city there was a shopping district, in which, most likely, flowers were sold. Arriving at the place of sale and pushing through the crowds of customers, David finally reached the florist. People were standing in front of the seller and interested in various flowering greenery. The seller clearly did not have enough hands and eyes for all the customers.
- "Do you see belladonna? Grab it and run."
- But... this is stealing.
- "You are going to kill a man in an hour, does stealing a flower mean anything to you?"
- You're right, if we are going to misbehave in this illusory world, then let's do it to the fullest!
Having grabbed the poisonous flowers and berries while the flower seller was too slow to notice, the would-be murderer went to the indicated address in the restaurant. He arrived there almost at the time of the beginning of the feast. It was a building constructed of dark wood logs with high windows and a bright, ornate sign: "Spring Breeze" at the entrance. Entering the building, David saw a wide table, completely filled with various dishes and drinks. The table was filled to the brim: a pig stuffed with apples, chicken legs in mushroom sauce, country-style potatoes, vegetable salads, dried fish, several types of wine from different grape varieties and aging. At the edges of the table were empty plates with a set of cutlery for members of the feast. A slightly elderly waiter approached the young man who entered.
- What would you like, dear guest?
- Good afternoon, excuse me, but what is the occasion for such a feast?
- It's a banquet for Father and the rest of the church's clergy. Why are you so interested in this?
- You see, I've wanted to see Father all my life, my family wouldn't let me, but my heart was drawn to it... So I was looking for a place where I could see him, or at best, even talk to him.
- Such an attitude is commendable. The venerable Father will be sitting behind that chair. Good luck in meeting him. - Having said this, the waiter quickly left.
- "You're a good negotiator. Where did you learn that?"
- I managed to get an autograph from Johnny Depp by going through his security. I know how to communicate with people.
- "People have already started to gather, hurry up and press the berries!"
Unobtrusively approaching Father's cup, into which the waiter had already managed to pour wine, David quickly squeezed the juice from the berries into the cup, after which, with a neat, elegant gait, he left the restaurant, next to which he turned the corner of the building. Two minutes later, Father and his retinue entered. David carefully approached the exit, looking inside. The same waiter approached him again.
- Now is your perfect chance, why don't you come in?
- I... am waiting for the moment when Father is not too busy, I do not want to distract him from an important conversation.
The waiter narrowed his eyes and looked at the guy suspiciously, then went off to serve tables. David watched the murder target, who was eating a piglet and eating potatoes with great pleasure. Everyone at the table was chatting furiously about various topics.
- Should we raise taxes for those entering?
- Great idea, and we should also raise prices for food and rent. I recently bought myself a ship, I need to pay off the loan somehow! Ha-ha!
- And did you hear that a guy with a mark escaped from prison today? Maybe we should cancel this feast, it's dangerous...
- Don't worry, my friend, he can't know where we are feasting, can he?
- Perhaps you are right... Father, I gave you a message through the temple gardener yesterday, did you receive it?
- Of course, it was delivered to me intact. And now I have something to say.
The Father rose from his chair, raised the goblet with the poisoned wine and began to make a toast. Meanwhile, all the other saints hastily poured themselves random wines into their goblets and began to wait for the speech to end, in order to finally get drunk to the point of oblivion.
- I thank everyone who came today. Unfortunately, I do not see Rumière among those present, but perhaps he is simply delayed. So, the tenth century has already passed since I am with you. I died in old age, having lived as many as 80 years of my life, and as a result I am here, with you, and I am sincerely happy. I do not want to make too long a speech, since you are clearly fed up with them over all these years, so I will shorten it. Much has happened during this time, and together we have made our world a better place. So let us once again thank our Ruler for granting us a second life and for our further prosperity. For peace! - after these words, the Father emptied his goblet, the others at the table repeated this gesture.
- "How long should it take for the poison to take effect?"
- Half an hour at least, although I poured a lot of juice.
Half an hour was extremely long for David and Malice. Everyone in the building continued to peacefully greedily consume meat and drink expensive alcohol. But soon, the first symptoms of poisoning appeared. Father leaned more and more toward the table, wanting to lie down, his face turned slightly blue, and besides, he clearly did not have enough air. After sitting in this state for two minutes, he fell to the floor.
- Holy Father, what's wrong with you?!
- Call a doctor!
- The-re is no need to call any-one... - the poisoned man lying on the floor wheezed.
- You will be cured quickly. I will run for him now.
- Don't bo-ther your-self... I am afraid this is the end for me.
- Please, don't die, Father! Who will look after the temple and the flock if not you?!
- Rumière will be an excellent replacement for me, and now, plea-*kh-kh*-se, leave this building, go to the temple and pray for me.
- We will not abandon you here!
- Please, fulfill my last will…
All the priests left the restaurant with extreme reluctance and went towards the temple, as if not noticing David standing in the doorway. The Father lying on the floor turned his head towards the exit.
- Come to me, boy. I know you're standing there.
David came out from behind the corner of the exit and approached the lying grandfather.
- Why did you poison me? Was it revenge?
- You poison people's minds with your religion and your demon. I know that they came from different times and for different reasons, and most likely, most of them just wanted to die. I was told that people are in a coma while they are here, but there are clearly those like Rumière, who died many years ago. Perhaps he wanted to end it all, like me. But you changed him… This is wrong! I don't even know if I'm dead or alive, but you give people false hope with your imposed God. They won't be able to live in this world the same way they did before. I want to end all this.
- Naive idiot. You haven't even seen the whole pic-*kh-kh*-ture. And you thought that you could solve people's problems for them just because you wanted to? No one will follow you, don't expect any support. The whole world is your enemy and you can't escape justice.
- Religion is evil. I don't know about the real world, but here it is for sure.
- Have you ever thought about why they invented such a thing as religion? To control people! Man is a dangerous, willful creature. And a catastrophe will happen if he is not restrained. The first stronghold is the law. It allows some things, forbids others, and punishes for the latter. These rules do not apply to criminals. And then religion comes into play. Do whatever you want in life, but after death you will be judged and you will not be able to escape from this. Our God acts in the same way: you go against the people of his world and himself - you receive punishment in the form of marks. Go even further and you find yourself in the same place as your predecessors, wearing black darkness in their heads. You will regret your views, ve-ry so-o…
Before he could finish saying the phrase, Father died. David turned around and left the restaurant.
- "It's time to leave town."
- I know.
