"We have arrived at our destination. Trainees, please enter the field."
Lance glanced at the small circular window behind him and sucked in his breath.
As if the person in charge sense their wants, all the window shades opened at the same time. All of them stood up and narrowed their eyes as they looked down.
Some could not help but sucked in their breath.
"Trainees, welcome to the second floor."
Immediately below them was a breathtaking scenery that Lance did not get to see all his life.
His fake memories of the 'real world' only has him living his ordinary life in the city'. There was no traveling in the mountain or ocean parts. Not to mention, most of his memories are composed of the dark grey world of the monster alien base.
The greenery of grassland with tall trees look extraordinary in the bumping hills. There was a river winding down from the ridge, and because there was no dark clouds in the sky, the entire landscape looked like a paradise everyone fantasized about in their cramped bunk beds.
Because of the infested alien species, not a single tree was left in their world. So seeing one, and also the refreshing sunshine with bright clean air made everyone's heart touched.
Second floor is so beautiful!
Even the body of water looks like a whole blanket of rich blue sky with diamonds glinting on the surface.
The person in charge let them admire the scenery for one whole minute before the ground on their feet suddenly disappeared.
Everyone dropped in the speed of a naked eye. The wind blew heavily in their ears, as if to pop their eardrums. Lance gritted his teeth and dig the memory of this person how he always perform during drop in stunt.
The hills below were becoming clearer and drawing nearer in Lance's field of view. He patted the combat gear he was wearing and found the slight bump at his back. He reach out his hand to smack it and the parachute stored in his combat gear suddenly opened up.
Lance was yanked back by the parachute and swayed violently as he headed for the hills. The wind on all sides blew stronger. He directly pulled the reins and willed the parachute to land him in the grassland. But no matter how much he steered it, the direction of the wind will deliberately pulled him to where the trees are.
Lance give up trying to take control of the parachute's direction and resorted to controlling the wind itself!
He can feel the sharp sensation of wind trying to cut into his arm. But instead of being hurt, he can feel his body being gently enveloped by the strong currents. He willed it to follow his command and he managed to smoothly land in the ground.
His body experienced the bumpy ride of being overflipped in the air so now he felt sick in his stomach. He lean against a tree and vomited on the spot!
Lance still felt sick to his stomach. It was like being submerged to that acidic liquid of the monster alien base. But this time, he wasn't killed nor tortured. He just felt sick. If he just waited for a while, he will feel better.
Lance force himself to calm down. To stabilize his nerves before he started an
investigation. The system said it will not be able to help him with anything in
this assessment. It was because there's a big possibility there are also
Awakeners in this assessment. And utilizing the system's power will immediately
alert the other Awakeners, thus making Lance the number one target for them to
purge.
Lance left the complicated things at the back of his head and scan his
surroundings. He had seen and roam the contaminated land of the infested alien.
And everything he laid his eyes on have the word 'Death' hanging on air.
But the surrounding of this place is full of vitality and life.
While Lance was distracted, something vibrated on his left shoulder. He patted on it and found there was a slight bump. He could not get it out of the combat gear, as if it was embedded on the clothing material.
[Announcement, the 51st Assessment of trainees from different fields have
officially assembled.]
[You are now in the isolated island of Miguan.]
A cold male voice speak from the metal bump on his left shoulder.
[The first and second assessment will take place on this very island. The third assessment will happen when the result of the first and second assessment has been finalized.]
[The first assessment clearance mission: Obtain a minimum of 80 points.]
[The rules of the assessment: Use the human weapons available in the area to target other trainees. Each accurate hit lets you gain 5 points. Hitting vital parts will give you 10 points and lead that trainee to be eliminated from the game.]
[Time limit: 5 days]
[If the trainee were not able to get the minimum 80 points within 5 days, the trainee will be eliminated.]
After these announcements were made, there's a long silence. Lance patted his combat gear and found out he had one small knife and one gun with ten bullets inside hidden in his pockets. So when the announcement earlier told them about human weapons in the area, it meant this one knife and gun in their combat gear?
A slight beep entered his ears and the mechanical voice earlier issued another
warning.
[Warning: Area B25 with trainee #421, a report was filed due to your malicious
behavior. Level C punishment will be issued.]
Not far away from where Lance is standing on, he heard a whistle. He curiously gazed at the tree, his ears pricked up. He could have sworn he detect a shadow moving behind its thick branches.
He took a step forward, not letting down his guard down. A shadow flash in front of him. Lance immediately sidestepped to the side to avoid the incoming unknown object.
He felt someone's iron grip pulling him to the side. He then felt himself being slammed to the ground and both of them rolled to the ground. Lance did not know who the other person is.
But as they were rolling in the ground earlier, he saw a flying drone in the front and on the left. Both stayed in place, then some kind of mechanism was opened and a series of stray bullets rained down to where they are.
Lance's facial expression immediately darkened. When they are rolling down the muddy ground, he caught a glimpse of this person's face. It was that woman who had her arm broken earlier.
Sensing the incoming danger, Lance's naturally developed instinct allowed him
to move in quick succession. He grabbed the woman by her scuff and leap towards
the downsliding hill below them.
Sharp branches and leaves got stuck in his face and clothes. The bullets are
still raining, coming from the drone above and coming at them strongly. Lance
and the woman were not given a room to catch up their breath.
The two drones hunted them right after they reached the bottom of the hill.
Lance felt a slight stab of pain from his left leg when he tried to stand up. But he wasn't given a chance to check what it was. He was pulled on his feet and the woman quickly drag him straight to the dense forest.
The sky above gradually grew dim. The distant landscape was covered in the towering pile of thick trees and leaves. The damp earthy smell of soil was richer and very comfortable to breathe in rather than the poisonous fog of the infested alien species and its liquified contaminated areas.
Lance try not to get bothered with it. But the occasional colors of the leaves and the different shades of the sky sometimes take him off track.
The world is so colorful.
In his artificial memories, there wasn't any scenery imprinted like this. It was just buildings. Then occasional blue sky with thin clouds. Then heavy clouds with thunderstorm.
He never knew that the sky could actually have different rich shades of orange, yellow and red that made it more appealing.
Lance's mind was wandering too far while they were on the run. The woman must have noticed his absent mindedness as she suddenly stopped and shoved him right inside a small cavern under the gigantic stone formation.
Lance only noticed her intention when she already had the knife in her hands. Despite her broken arm, she ripped the side of her shirt and used it to bandage the arm. Exposing the side of her skin.
When Lance took a glance at it, he saw three fresh lash wounds that are still bright red. They are no longer bleeding but he could have sworn it must have hurt to move around.
"Stay here." The woman's voice was soft but filled with frost that could chill the entire cave. But when Lance heard her speak, his heart beat quickly.
