He did not dawdle and drew out his gun. He aimed and shot within a split second. Lance's aim is always good but his specialty is not with guns. Luka, with his smiling and amicable attitude is actually a gun master.
Lance did not know how Luka did it. But just when Lance's bullet was about five meters away, he fired a bullet to parry it. Making a small explosion to where the two bullets meet.
"Hehehe," Luka grinned.
Alice was annoyed this man was following them. She grabbed Lance's gun and aimed at Luka. She fired all the bullets in the gun at him, leaving Lance stunned at her side. Before Lance could say anything, Alice jumped forward and managed to find Luka hiding in the bushes. His shoulders, arms, and leg were hit by Alice's bullets.
He managed to deflect the first shot, but who would have thought the second bullet was already rushing straight at him? Who in their crazy mind wastes bullets like this?! In the end, Luka was hit, and he could not stop Alice in time when she came to him. Luka was slammed to the ground. Alice did not hesitate to scrape her small knives along Luka's neck, killing him instantly.
"Woah, so vicious," Lance shuddered. Luka's body immediately disappeared. The facilitators had retrieved his body. He was not dead. He had just failed this assessment.
Alice stood up and walked toward the sound of the river she heard, Lance quickly keeping up with her. The sound of water was coming from below. They were on a hill looking over at a riverbank. However, it seemed they were a bit too late. Someone had already built a campfire. It took quite some time before they arrived here, and the moon from above was reflected on the surface of the sparkling waves. It wasn't surprising someone had already made camp near a water source. Lance and Alice could only watch.
Lance stood idly at Alice's side, wanting to know what she planned to do. She was always quiet and indifferent. A calm individual who clearly didn't want to be ordered around by others. The next thing she did surprised Lance. She crouched down and urged Lance to sit next to her, hiding from prying eyes.
"What's wrong?" Lance whispered.
She pointed to the right, opposite to where the campfire was. There was movement in that area. Lance might not have seen it, but he heard the faint breathing of a human. Their quick feet lightly tapped on the ground. In the next second, the crack of a gun rang out by the campfire. Lance and Alice watched as two men stood up and ran in the direction right across from them. It wasn't long before they rushed to the forest when they let out a shrill scream. Lance caught sight of their shadows as they tried to hide for cover but still got shot. They could not see the face of the shooter, as they hid deeply in the woods. The bodies of the two men disappeared as they dispersed into dust. Lance was in a daze, still processing what happened. The two men had only gotten up and run just two minutes ago, but they were already shot and killed in less than a minute.
"Let's go," Alice urged. She got up and went in the direction to the left.
"Where?"
"Water. Let's secure our supplies."
Lance hurriedly grabbed Alice's wrist, stopping her from moving forward.
"But the enemy is still there."
Alice looked at him blankly. "It's alright." She removed his hand and continued moving forward. Lance was completely puzzled. His hand was itching to stop this little girl from rushing to her death. But in the end, he sighed and ran after her. Only when they arrived at where the supplies were did Lance understand why she was acting like that.
A young man was already waiting, fiddling to get the supplies of the two dead men while there were new supplies at his feet.
"Oohh, Alice. Come, come. Look at this." The young man had curly brown hair and a scar on his right eye. He had a big burly body with a small scar on his right cheek. His eyes curved in delight when he saw Alice appear in the woods.
"Oooh, tsk. Tsk. Is your arm alright? Here, drink this healing medicine."
When the young man noticed Lance, he did not hesitate to raise the assault rifle in his hand. Lance hid behind a tree and maneuvered away. The young man did not stop there. He positioned himself behind a tree and fired at Lance's hiding spot, forcing Lance to crouch down and crawl away from the tree trunk.
"Oh, you're not getting away!" the young man roared. He leaped beneath the bushes and tackled Lance to the ground. The chaotic brawl commenced. Lance was punched in the gut and the side of his face. He was not idle either and he kicked, smacked, and shoved his elbow at the guy's face.
"Hey, stop it," Alice called out. No one listened. The young man and Lance rolled on the ground, scratched by the small stones and branches. Alice marched to where they were and tried to separate the two, but they were like kids fighting for chocolates.
"You punched my face!"
"You attacked me first!"
"My beautiful face is damaged!"
"What?!"
They spat at each other, kicking and punching until their faces were swollen and their bodies were covered in wounds and bruises. Alice got tired of trying to stop them and proceeded to check the supplies. She swallowed the pills and breathed a sigh of relief as the cooling sensation eased the pain. The system that was muted for quite some time finally spoke with enthusiasm.
[Michael is here! Why did I not notice him? Was he with us earlier? Did the dumb Marshal who broke your arm notice him?]
"Shut up." Alice wanted to enable the mute function again but found she had overused the feature for the day.
[Are you planning to work together with Michael and Lance?]
Alice groaned. Her sour mood was evident on her face, but the system did not stop rambling in her head.
[Are you thinking of destroying the main system that controls the Suits so that the mecha alien species' main network of database will be disrupted as well?]
[That's a good plan, ah. I'm glad you are finally willing to consider working together with others.]
"But are you sure you will succeed by having Michael and Lance on your team?"
Alice refused to answer. She slumped against the tree trunk to breathe. The forest's refreshing air healed her lungs, especially after spending the entire day on the contaminated Earth. Coming to this paradise could heal one's mind and exhausted body.
Alice smiled slightly, enjoying the tranquility, when Lance was hurled in her direction. She hesitated between dodging or just getting hit. But if she dodged, this idiot would suffer a heavy injury. Dejected, she sighed and caught Lance, wrapping her arms around his torso. The tree trunk supported her balance. She looked down and noticed Lance's face was full of black and blue bruises. Michael the brute roared as he ran toward Lance with his fist swinging.
"Stop it!" Alice was getting annoyed.
Michael immediately turned from a wild dog into an obedient puppy. "Sit here." Sensing her anger, Michael's ears drooped, and he scuttled to her side.
"Yes, sister."
Lance was taken aback.
"You – you're siblings?" His face was full of disbelief.
Alice's features were soft and amicable. That is why, even though she is usually aloof and indifferent, some might mistake her for being timid and quiet. Her peach blossom eyes curved, highlighting her excellent features. Meanwhile, Michael was the opposite. The only thing attractive about him was his curly brown hair. His eyebrows were sharp, his nose and jawline fierce. Not to mention the scar on his right eye; his demeanor gave off the impression of a wild thug.
Alice and Michael nodded.
"I – I can't tell," Lance stuttered.
Michael scoffed. "We get that a lot."
"Michael, this is Lance. We will work together with him."
"Are you sure? But sister, he is not like us. I can tell; he is an ordinary soldier trained at one of their bases. How can we trust him?"
Lance frowned at his words. Not like us? What does that mean?
"His goal is the same. He wants to get his friends out of the hibernation pods." At this, Michael was convinced.
"Are you also a Suit too?"
Too?
[No, don't answer.] The system warned Lance in his head.
"Yes," Lance ignored the system. He wanted to gain the trust of these two. And since Michael said 'too,' that means...
Alice and Michael were in the same situation as him.
"It was a few days ago. I lived my life thinking I had a normal life in a normal city. I was a prodigy in e-sports games.
