The moment I reached home there was chaos, like always. The twins were fighting about some irrelevant and unimportant thing. I swear the only time they got along was when they were out to get me. Their parents were yelling at them and creating an even bigger ruckus than their kids. The other kids were either yelling with them or at them. I was interested in neither so I did as I always do -entered through the side door and made my way to the dorm room, where I gathered my things and got out of the crazy place.
Once I was out, I felt free. They didn't really care where the kids went, as long as they were there when they needed them and when there was an inspection of the orphanage. I tried not to be there most of the time. I wouldn’t say I hated them but I didn’t love 'em either.
Well... My part-time jobs started right after school. I needed to collect as much money as possible as I was gonna have to move out of the orphanage when I turned eighteen, which wasn’t too long from now. I was pretty sure no one would adopt me. I was too old for that and I had met enough of the families that came here to know that I didn't want to be adopted by any of them or anyone like them. I liked being independent. Though I did feel lonely sometimes. Sometimes I just wished I had a best friend I could actually talk to.( Besides my gang of friends, everyone else ignored or avoided me.) I guess I was wishing for normal. Something that was not in my vocabulary. I really did hate it when other people wished to be me ; the guy everyone was scared of. They didn't know a damn thing about me and they just didn't realize how hard it really was to be me.
With the money I earned, I was able to buy myself a car. So I drove to school as well as to the two places I worked at. The first was at a cafe as a waiter till 8 or whatever time. I basically got a call whenever they needed me and I got some days off when I asked, so that was a great job.
'Hey Ash! Looking good today. '
The moment I entered the cafe I was greeted by the owner's nephew, who was at the counter.
'Hey Jim. How's it going? ' I forced a smile on my face. I doubt he noticed that though.
'Great. That bimbo came again today, you know the one at….' He began as always.
'K I think I've heard enough. I'm gonna go get changed now. ' I cut him off ‘cause I really needed to get changed and begin work and besides I didn’t want to talk to him.
'Ok. See you at the bar tonight?’ He asked hopefully.
'Yeah, sure. ' I replied. I unfortunately had to be nice to him. I really needed to keep this job. And it totally didn't help that the guy was bi.
He has been after me since he started working here. I still remembered the look on his face when we first met at the bar. It was one of the things I really wanted to forget. When I learnt that he was the nephew of the owner I was in a sour mood that entire day. It was not that I disliked him or anything but he was one of the clingy guys. I really hated that trait.
I quickly changed into my uniform and headed outside. The moment I stepped out I caught sight of the crowd we had today. There were a bunch of old ladies in a corner and a group of gangster-looking guys in another.
I picked up my notepad and made my way to the table full of oldies and asked them for their order. As they were talking to me they were simultaneously checking me out and it was creepy.
After that came the next job. It was fun actually. But it depended on one's idea of fun. I worked at the bar at night. I suppose you've kinda figured that out, right?
Well, the bar that I worked at was completely full at night. Parties went on till morning. The place was not just a bar but also had rooms which people booked for the night, as most couldn't drive home. It was the best bar in Brownlow, so it attracted a lot of attention.
There was a light drizzle while I was on my shift at the cafe. The sky had cleared since then but the roads were still kinda wet. Clothes and shoes especially would be difficult to maintain when it started pouring. I was a little bit worried about it. I had to change a lot in one day due to the places I worked at.
I parked my car a little away from the place as I knew how crowded the parking lot could get. I entered the bar,- which I forgot to mention, was named 'Royal Night bar and lodgings'- by the back door. It was getting dark and people had already started coming.
I quickly got ready and joined the other bartenders at the counter. The employees here worked as both bartenders as well as waiters if they had the skills and since I did I usually worked a double shift and did both. Sometimes Vi worked here as well. She was related to the owner so she came when we were short staffed.
My 'uniform' consisted of a tight fitting black shirt, with the first few buttons open and black skin tight jeans accompanied by black shoes. My sleeves were rolled up sometimes, hair unnaturally messy and finally dog tags to complete the look.
I kinda liked the lighting of the bar. It was a kind of pink- purple glow and one corner that was private had a disco ball. The tables were arranged randomly. They were really tiny tall tables with high chairs around them. I had never actually been to the private section. The older, more experienced waiters and waitresses were in charge of it.
As I was filling and refilling glasses I could feel various eyes constantly on me. I smiled. For some reason, I liked this kind of attention. I had to wait a while longer though. People were continuously piling inside and there seemed to be a shortage of bartenders and waiters today. Only two people other than me were selling drinks at the counter while the others were either waiting tables, swallowing some guy's or girl’s face or were getting laid in the rooms above.
I sighed. If they didn't return back soon, I would get stuck here only selling drinks and not having any fun.
People from school were also here. They somehow always found a way to get in even if they were banished from the place due to their behaviour.
I suddenly spotted Jim, who was making his way toward me. I prepared myself for his madness and put on a tight smile when he reached me.
'Hey, babe. Wanna... 'He started, with a big smile on his face.
I didn't let him finish the sentence and asked, 'would you like a drink Jim? '
He already seemed drunk to me. He was good looking and all, but just not my type. Basically, I didn't like clingy superficial guys. But I had to bear with him since he was the boss's nephew.
'Uh, yeah sure, ' was all he said before devouring his first drink of the day. His dad put a lot of pressure on him. Especially with him taking over his dad's company. He was working at the cafe as a kind of practice of what we would do on a large scale in the future.
I served a few drinks and when Jim was not paying any attention to me, I made my way to the tables.
I caught sight of Vi devouring some guy's face, I guess Danny couldn't make it.
'Hey, are you guys having fun? ' I asked in a seductive voice as I approached a table. I tried to be careful not to be too obvious around Brownlow students. I'm not actively trying to conceal that I'm gay… ok maybe I am but it's just to avoid trouble though I don't know what kind. But I've already heard a few rumors floating around and have shut most of them down.
The table that I had gone to had around seven guys from some gang that used to come to the place quite often.
'Oh yeah! But you know what would be more fun? '
The guy who responded was one of the younger ones who immediately got up and kissed me on the lips. I wasn't surprised in the least. That was what people here did. It was what I did.
He had on a black loose fit shirt and dark blue jeans that hung low. He had piercings in his ears and a chain necklace that came halfway down his chest. His hair was a curly mess that was partially contained by a cap turned backwards and he had on a pair of blue sneakers. He was definitely hot.
After the kiss, we went up to one of the rooms above. The moment we entered the room we kissed again and we couldn't get our hands off each other. It seemed like quite a promising night.
