Not far from it, Yuu could see old oak trees stretching their branches to the sky as if trying to reach it. Behind the trees, she saw flowers growing. She tried to look at them, but through the window at night, it was nearly impossible.
Deciding to go outside, she quietly opened the door of her room and snuck out. The hallways were silent and seemed distant. Only the soft crackling of the candles could be heard; they were still lit in the hallway. Yuu thought that everyone might have gone to bed already, so she tiptoed through the corridor adorned with various paintings. The Moriarty Manor's hallway resembled a maze, but luckily, she had memorized the way.
When she finally reached the main entrance, she unlocked the door and felt a gentle breeze kiss her skin. She closed the door behind her and headed for the bench. The night was bright, and she could easily find her way, accompanied by the sounds of rustling leaves and the fragrance of different kinds of flowers. However, Yuu didn't pay much attention to the flowers; she was focused on reaching the bench she had seen from the window, eager to sink into it and observe the sky.
At long last, she reached the bench, sat down, and sank into it. The bench was neither comfortable nor uncomfortable, but she didn't pay much attention to that.
Yuu gazed at the starry sky, feeling as if the stars gazed back at her. The night enveloped her with its presence, and once again, Yuu found herself lost in her thoughts.
Meanwhile, William heard the door of Yuu's room creak and lifted his head from the book he was immersed in. He decided to follow Yuu. When he saw her on the bench, looking at the stars and lost in thought, he slowly approached her.
“Is everything alright, Yuu?” he asked, but she didn’t hear him as her mind seemed to be wandering far away. Noticing this, William took a step closer and repeated his question, “Yuu, are you alright?” His expression was full of concern.
Yuu snapped out of her thoughts and tilted her head to meet William's gaze. “Oh, sorry. I didn’t realize I wasn’t alone. I hope I haven’t woken you up.”
“I was immersed in a book. I just wanted to check on you to see if everything is alright. May I sit next to you?”
“Of course. No need to ask. This bench isn’t even mine,” Yuu let out a soft giggle and then continued, never breaking eye contact with William, “I just couldn’t fall asleep, that's all. When I saw how beautiful the sky looked tonight through the window, I couldn’t resist the allure of it. I hope it's alright?”
William smiled as he looked at the horizon, now sitting on the bench next to Yuu. “The sky indeed has its own charm, and you are more than welcome to observe it from wherever you want.”
Yuu averted her eyes from him to the sky. “Thank you. It's just that... the sky always has this effect on me. I've always liked observing it. It's such a simple, yet complicated creation.”
William nodded in agreement and stared at the sky. “I sometimes find myself gazing at the sky, too.”
Yuu paused, surprised. Her eyes wandered over William's silhouette, sensing the honesty in their conversation. With a glint in her eyes, she chuckled and expressed her thoughts freely, “Who would have thought that the Lord of Crime had a romantic side?”
William, understanding Yuu's playful banter, chuckled slightly as he looked at her.
After that, a comfortable silence enveloped them for a moment. But before long, Yuu broke the silence by shifting her gaze to the sky once more, her facial expression changing from playful to thoughtful. She took a deep breath before speaking. “You know... I worry about Victor. He has never left our manor and only stayed in London. Well, he did travel to a few countries for holidays, but he isn’t the adventurous type and always preferred to stay at home. And now, we are in the unknown. We don’t know what the future holds, and there are so many questions and not many answers. I just hope he will be okay and won't fall apart.”
Feeling her uncertainty, William shifted slightly on the bench to face Yuu, whose expression remained contemplative. “And what about you, Yuu? How do you feel about the situation?”
Yuu, still looking at the sky, didn’t answer right away. She silently pondered how to respond to the question, then finally voiced her inner thoughts. “Life is full of lessons.” She paused briefly, gathering her thoughts further. Then, she shifted her position to meet William's eyes, her voice firm yet soft as she continued, “Life... It’s a journey, not a destination. And I am a traveler, an adventure seeker. I should look at this situation as an adventure. I'm used to being away from home, moving here and there – it’s an opportunity to grow as a person, expand my knowledge, and widen my world. This situation allows me to witness history with my own eyes and perhaps even become a part of it. I'm not saying it will be easy or that the path will be strewn with rose petals. I may face mental challenges along the way, but what I want to convey is that I am ready to face this challenge. I am scared, yet at the same time, I am excited and intrigued to see where this journey leads us. Once a traveler, always a traveler. And now, a time traveler too. Not many can boast about that,” Yuu concluded with a soft giggle.
William, sensing the light-heartedness in Yuu's voice, appreciated her ability to view her unique situation from this perspective. He smiled back at her, complimenting her strength. “You are strong, Yuu,” he admitted, his voice sincere and thoughtful.
A silence enveloped them as Yuu gazed into his deep scarlet eyes, which shimmered like rubies even in the darkness of night. She found herself drawn to his eyes, sensing a gentle allure within them. Strangely, she felt as if she glimpsed sadness behind his strong façade. His eyes seemed to hold answers to untold mysteries, simultaneously cold and warm, reflecting the burdens he carried and harboring unspoken emotions. Yet, amidst the darkness, she also saw a glimmer of light. His eyes were an ocean of untold stories, the surface calm and composed, but with a depth that hinted at the storms he had weathered. They were pools of complexity, where sorrow and strength intertwined, and every glance seemed to reveal a new layer of his soul.
Then she suddenly averted her gaze from him and looked once again at the starry sky before speaking her mind and continuing the conversation where they left off. “I wish... I could say that about myself,” she sighed, taking a deep breath. “All I do is... run away... maybe...” She paused again for a moment and added, “Maybe one day I will find a way to face myself.” Yuu smiled sadly in response to William's remark.
William sensed that something was bothering Yuu, but he didn’t want to inquire further, knowing she had already had an eventful day.
Then Yuu suddenly sneezed, and William's eyes softened. “I think it's time to go inside, or you'll catch a cold,” he said.
Yuu glanced briefly at the sky once more before leaving. “You are right,” she said. They both stood up and returned to the manor in silence, their path illuminated by the curtains of stars, which felt like their guides.
When they finally reached their respective room doors, Yuu broke the silence. “They say that eyes tell a lot. It's like a mirror to one's soul. You see, eyes convey more than words; they tell stories. I always assess people by their eyes,” Yuu looked into William's eyes, their gazes locking once more. She continued, “And yours, William, they tell a story. A story that feels as if you've journeyed through the depths of hell and returned.”
She didn't wait for his response, simply bid him goodnight, and went into her room. William was left speechless, contemplating in silence. He understood that Yuu was an observer who could see beyond the surface or facade of a person. With a faint smile, he opened the door and entered his room, where silence was his only companion.
