Roderic led Kai to a large building at the far end of the courtyard, where the living quarters for the students were located. The dormitory was a sprawling structure, with rows of rooms and shared spaces for rest and study. It was here that Kai would spend his nights, recovering from the rigorous training sessions that lay ahead.
As they entered the building, they were met by a young man with a friendly smile and a confident air about him. He had short, tousled hair and bright, inquisitive eyes that sparkled with intelligence.
“Kai, this is Raylan,” Roderic introduced. “He’ll be your roommate during your time here at the academy.”
Raylan extended a hand, his smile broadening. “Welcome to the academy, Kai. I hope you’re ready for the challenge.”
Kai shook his hand, feeling a sense of relief at the warm reception. “Thanks, Raylan. I’m looking forward to it.”
Raylan chuckled. “You’ll have to be. The training here is no joke. But don’t worry, we’ll get through it together.”
As they made their way to their shared room, Raylan filled Kai in on some of the academy’s details—what to expect from the training, the instructors to watch out for, and the general routine of life at the academy. Kai listened intently, eager to absorb every bit of information.
When they arrived at their room, Kai was surprised by its simplicity. The room was modestly furnished, with two beds, a couple of wooden chests, and a small table by the window. It was a far cry from the opulence of the academy’s exterior, but it was comfortable and functional.
As Kai began to settle in, he noticed a framed picture on Raylan’s bedside table. It was of a beautiful young woman with long, flowing hair and gentle eyes that mirrored Raylan’s own.
Raylan noticed Kai’s gaze and grinned. “That’s my sister, Elara. She’s also a student here. You’ll probably meet her soon—she’s hard to miss.”
Kai couldn’t help but be curious. “Is she training in the same discipline as you?”
Raylan nodded. “Yes, she’s a skilled martial artist and an excellent swordswoman. She’s the pride of our family.”
Kai felt a pang of envy, though not in a malicious way. He admired the bond between Raylan and his sister, and he couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to have a family to be proud of.
