The Avenger of the Forgotten

Chapter 8: The First Lesson

Chapter 8: The First Lesson

Aug 13, 2024

With his chosen weapon in hand, Kai followed Roderic to the academy’s primary training ground. The vast, open space was filled with students of all levels, practicing their techniques under the watchful eyes of the instructors. The sound of clashing swords, the rhythmic thud of fists against training dummies, and the sharp bark of commands created a symphony of discipline and focus.

Roderic led Kai to a quieter corner of the training ground, where a small group of students were practicing sword techniques. The instructor overseeing the group was a tall, stern woman with piercing eyes and a commanding presence. She was known as Master Lyra, one of the academy’s most respected swordsmasters.

“Master Lyra,” Roderic said, bowing slightly. “This is Kai Lumis, my new student. He has chosen his weapon and is ready to begin his training.”

Master Lyra looked Kai over, her gaze sharp and assessing. “You’ve chosen a blade that requires strength and precision. Let’s see if you’re up to the task.”

Kai swallowed nervously but nodded, his grip tightening on the sword’s hilt. He knew that this was just the beginning, that he had much to learn before he could truly master the weapon he had chosen.

Master Lyra took a step back and drew her own sword, a sleek, elegant blade that glinted in the sunlight. “The first technique you will learn is called the ‘Foundation Strike.’ It is the basis for all swordplay, a simple yet powerful move that can be adapted to any situation.”

She demonstrated the technique with fluid grace, her sword slicing through the air with a swift, precise motion. The strike was delivered with a combination of speed and control, the blade stopping just short of an imaginary opponent.

“Now, you try,” she instructed, stepping aside to observe.

Kai took a deep breath, positioning himself as he had seen Master Lyra do. He focused on the sword in his hands, feeling its weight and balance. Then, with a determined exhale, he swung the blade in a similar arc, trying to replicate the smooth, controlled movement.

The sword cut through the air with a satisfying whoosh, but Kai could tell it lacked the precision and power of Master Lyra’s strike. His form was still raw, his movements not yet refined.

Master Lyra nodded thoughtfully. “Not bad for a first attempt. But you need to focus more on the fluidity of the movement. The strike should feel natural, like an extension of your body, not forced.”

Kai nodded, determined to get it right. He practiced the move again and again, each time trying to improve his form and control. Master Lyra offered guidance and corrections, helping him refine his technique with each swing of the blade.

By the end of the session, Kai was drenched in sweat, his muscles aching from the exertion. But there was a sense of accomplishment in his heart, a feeling that he was one step closer to mastering the sword.

“Good work today, Kai,” Master Lyra said, her tone approving. “Remember, mastery takes time. Keep practicing, and you will improve.”

Kai bowed respectfully, his breath heavy but his spirit light. “Thank you, Master Lyra. I’ll keep working hard.”

As Kai sheathed his sword, he felt a new sense of purpose. The journey ahead would be long and challenging, but he was ready to face it head-on. With Roderic’s guidance and the support of his new friends, he was confident that he could become the warrior he needed to be.
