The Avenger of the Forgotten

Chapter 16: Raylan’s Trial

Chapter 16: Raylan’s Trial

Aug 13, 2024

The second day of the tournament brought a new wave of excitement to the academy. The stands were filled with students and instructors, all eager to witness the next round of matches. The air was thick with anticipation as Raylan, one of the academy’s most promising students, prepared to face his first opponent.

Kai stood in the shadows of the arena, watching as Raylan entered the ring. His friend’s demeanor was calm, almost casual, but Kai knew better. Beneath that cool exterior, Raylan’s mind was a whirl of calculations and strategies. He was facing a formidable opponent—a student known for his cunning and unpredictable fighting style.

As the match began, Raylan took a defensive stance, his eyes never leaving his opponent. The other student wasted no time, launching a series of rapid, feigned attacks, each one designed to probe Raylan’s defenses and lure him into making a mistake.

But Raylan was patient. He didn’t take the bait, instead deflecting the attacks with minimal effort, conserving his energy. His opponent grew frustrated, his movements becoming more aggressive, more erratic. It was exactly what Raylan had been waiting for.

Kai watched with bated breath as Raylan began to turn the tide of the battle. He countered each of his opponent’s moves with precision, exploiting every weakness and opening. The arena was silent, the crowd on the edge of their seats as the two fighters clashed in a flurry of steel and sparks.

Raylan’s thoughts were clear and focused. He could sense his opponent’s growing desperation, the way his strikes were becoming sloppier, less controlled. He knew it was only a matter of time before the student made a critical mistake.

That moment came when his opponent, in a final, desperate attempt to land a blow, overextended himself. Raylan saw the opening and moved with lightning speed. He sidestepped the attack and delivered a powerful blow to his opponent’s weapon hand, disarming him in an instant. The sword clattered to the ground, and the referee quickly stepped in to declare Raylan the winner.

The crowd erupted in applause, but Raylan remained composed, his breathing steady as he lowered his sword. He glanced toward the stands, where Kai stood watching, and gave a small, confident nod. Kai returned the gesture, a sense of pride swelling in his chest. Raylan’s victory was well-earned, a testament to his skill and discipline.

As Raylan left the arena, he was surrounded by fellow students congratulating him on his win. But his thoughts were already on the next challenge. He knew the tournament was far from over, and the competition would only get tougher. But for now, he allowed himself a moment of satisfaction. He had faced a difficult opponent and emerged victorious—a small but significant step on his journey.

Meanwhile, Kai felt a renewed sense of determination. Watching Raylan’s fight had reignited the fire within him, reminding him of the importance of discipline and strategy. He knew he still had a long way to go in his training, but he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
