Chapter 19.
Mourning in the heart
When the sun rose it was as if nothing had happened, as if the God Morpheus had kept the memories of the town busy during the night while they slept, creating an illusion for each one of their desired reality…
Although the truth was more painful, because when the town was just beginning to move and walk, at the entrance of the houses of the families of the 15 young people there was a silver tray with the head and heart of their son: the heart stabbed and decorated with tree leaves and a branch in the middle of the heart, the mothers upon seeing the lifeless eyes of their brave sons burst into tears…
It was so agonizing to hear them cry, that the town was in mourning in silence; and when Muriel heard of this tragedy, he decided to go to the town and give his condolences to the families of the children who had died, knowing that if it had not been for his ingenuity, the Beast would not calm down.
What he did not expect was that along the entrance to the forest, almost hanging like a banner, there was the fresh and still juicy skin of the children.
The mothers tried to touch the skins of their children, but when they tried to do so, the forest itself scared them away by blowing a horrible growl all around.
Then the wind blew the skins to the other side and everyone could see that inside the skins there were engraved some words: THE FOREST OF LOST TEARS, TOX…
The people could not believe what they were seeing in front of them and ran back to their houses with those horrible images running through their heads incessantly…the skin rolling away to reveal the words; and the heads and hearts of his children stabbed, ¿why couldn't there be a hero who could really save them from that doom?
He found the words that were engraved on the skin of the young people curious. , to which Muriel commented: the Beast is letting us know that is the name of the forest and that we should not cross its borders, notice that this time it has acted differently, it has not let the bodies rot in the air to eat them later, but on the contrary, it devoured them inside leaving only the skin and separating the head and the heart, it was then that one of the affected mothers knelt on the floor and said to him: you keep the Beast at bay, tell him to give me back my son, he was only 13 years old, please I beg you, tell him to give him back to me, but Muriel simply answered her: ¿How can I ask him to give me back a dead person?, someone who has already been devoured, as painful as it may be, I cannot ask death to give me back my life and although it is true that the Beast listens to me, I cannot always handle it, I myself have been busy on my property, which is why I have also neglected my obligations to the town, but the woman yelled at him: you are a liar, a traitor, you have to bear the blame for my son's death, if you can't bring him back, then give freedom to the people, go into the forest and bring the Beast's head, only then will this mother forgive you, but Muriel bent down and stared at her and said: you can't demand that I do something that doesn't come from my heart, I can't go into the forest because as you can see, the Beast seems to be in breeding season, because if you count all the skins you will realize that one is missing, and of all the heads that were delivered there are only 14, there is a boy in there who remains alive and is probably entertaining the Beast and planning how to kill it, then all the people around them counted the skins and indeed there were 14, hope shone again in the hearts of the people, but that mother remained kneeling on the ground watching how everyone left and she prostrated herself at the entrance of the forest trying to get the Beast to see her and take her as a snack.
But in that state, the woman with cloudy eyes thought she saw a stone-like figure approaching where she was hiding behind a bush and saying that they should bring the daughter of a lion to break the curse.
The woman did not understand much, and when she stood up and opened her eyes she realized that there was nothing, that it seemed like she had dreamed it.
But, ¿was it really a dream?
